Mithali Raj creates history, becomes first Indian woman to score 10,000 International runs

Indian women’s team ODI skipper, Mithali Raj became only the second woman in the world to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs in all forms of cricket. She joined English Women’s cricket legend Charlotte Edwards in the elite list. En-route her 36 run innings vs South Africa in the third match of the 5-match ODI series, Raj crossed the 10k barrier to become the first Indian woman to get to the magic figure.

Mithali, 38, is also the all-time leading run-scorer in woman’s ODI cricket with 6974 runs in her kitty at an average of 50.64 and at a strike rate of 85. The Andhra born has seven hundreds and 54 fifties in her 212 match ODI career. Apart from the ODIs, she has also scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is and 663 in runs in 10 Tests.

The match in which this feat was achieved is the third game of the five-match series which is tied at 1-1. The Indian women have set up a target of 249 courtesy a 77 off 108 balls by Punam Raut. In reply, South Africa women were at 55-1 in the reply at the time of writing this piece.

Virat Kohli backs KL Rahul over Dhawan as opener, rules out R Ashwin's comeback in WT20

The Indian team across formats are beaming with serious depths and the team management has a problem of plenty before their hands as a five-match T20I series is scheduled to start in Ahmedabad tomorrow. Out of all the spots of the playing XI up for debate, the name of the second opener has been widely speculated by media and cricket fans. However, in the views of the team management, KL Rahul is the certainty to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order and Kohli made no hiding of how both he and the team rate Rahul’s prowess with the bat. However, the experienced Shikhar Dhawan has not been completely overlooked yet, and his chances will come in due course of time, Kohli suggested in the pre-match press conference. “If Rohit plays, it’s simple. KL and Rohit have done well for us consistently. If either of them take rest, Shikhar is the third opener. Rohit and Rahul will start against England," Kohli said in the pre-match press conference. The ongoing series against England and India were to comprise a five-match Test series initially, but both ECB and BCCI came to the conclusion that playing a five-match T20Is would serve the purpose better for both sides with the World T20 scheduled at the end of the year. Kohli too realises the fact and outlined the importance of the upcoming series in context to the World Cup and said that the team is shaping up nicely in terms of balance leading up to the big tournament that India will be hosting. “These are the only five games we have as a team before the World Cup and we want to see how these guys fare in the middle. I feel the squad right now we have barring Jaddu, who will come back whenever fit, is the most balanced in terms of the options available to take the field as and when required,” Kohli added. The Indian top-order which has comprised Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, and KL Rahul at different points of times in the recent past has attracted severe criticism for batting with a measured approach and eating up too many balls. Kohli did not hide away from this issue and said that the team will look to address that aspect of the game, and now that that the team has added some players who will bring their X-factors with them, the team can set a template of playing an aggressive brand of cricket, instead of looking to spend time at the crease from this series onwards. “We have played with a certain kind of pattern in the past. We did not have a big tournament to work towards in the past. If you look at the squad, the additions we have made we have tried to address a few things we needed in specific,” Kohli said. "We want to play free cricket, we have explosive batsmen in the team now. That's exactly what we are trying to address. This time around you will see players bat more freely. I see us being much more free with our approach from this series onwards. Considering the World T20 will be played on Indian pitches, the cricketing world, along with the touring England team has put the onus on the hosts and labelled them the favourites to win the cup for the second time after their triumph in the inaugural edition in 2007. However, Kohli recognises England as the firm favourites to win the trophy for their second time as well after 2010. He said that the England team under the leadership of Eoin Morgan has leapfrogged other teams in terms of firepower and strengths and the world will have a close look at the Englishmen in the World Cup. "I think it's England who will be the team to beat. They are the number one side in the world and the prime focus will be on them in this World Cup. All the other teams will be wary of the strengths that they bring onto the park and every other team would agree with what I say. It's England who are the favourites and that will not change regardless of how they think," Kohli added. After winning Man of the Match in the second Test of the series against England, Ravichandran Ashwin had said that he was not dreaming to play for India in the limited-overs cricket, instead, he was realistic and eager to play in the play for India again in the blue jersey. Kohli was asked about Ashwin’s contention for the T20 world cup, but the Indian skipper outrightly ruled out the return of the veteran off-spinner who has just won the Man of the Series award in the Test series against England. Kohli said that the Washington Sundar has done really well as an off-spinner in the limited opportunities he has got and that the team is not looking forward to playing two bowlers of the same kind in the shortest format. He said that the way back for Ashwin in the World T20 would come only at the expense of Washington who is unlikely to be replaced in the foreseeable future, and hence the question lacked logic in the absence of a place for Ashwin in the playing XI. "Washington has been doing really well for us. So you cannot have two players of the same discipline, playing in one spot. So unless Washy has a drastically horrible season and things go south for him. I mean the question has to be asked with some kind of logic as well. You suggest where you would add Ash, and play him in the team? Washington already does that job for the team. It's easy to ask a question but you should have a logical explanation to it yourself," said Kohli. The five-match T20 series between India and England will commence at the Narendra Modi Stadium tomorrow and the jury is out for Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the shortest format as the absence of any major ICC trophy in his cabinet will start to feel as the World T20 is looming large on the world cricket.

PCB eyeing PSL return in June

The Pakistan Super League that was postponed earlier this month with immediate effect will resume in June. The Pakistan Cricket Board and the franchises are targeting the month of June to resume the tournament. “June emerged as the most preferred and practical window due to Pakistan men’s national cricket team’s international commitments in March/April and late August/September,” a release from PSL said. There are 20 matches remaining to take place in the tournament. These fixtures are now being planned after the men’s team return from Zimbabwe on May 13 and before their departure for England on June 26. “The PCB management will now look into the operational and logistical challenges and revert to the franchise owners and stakeholders,” the release further added. The PSL was postponed after a rise in the COVID-19 cases within the league. The PCB CEO had earlier said the decision of postponing the league was taken after a discussion with the franchise owners. "We had a discussion this morning with the franchise owners and we came to the conclusion that it was best to postpone the event. We entered that meeting with the franchisees with one or two possible solutions, one in terms of looking to halt proceedings for five days until we were able to make sense of what was going on and see whether we could move forward. There was a strong consensus that it was untenable to continue based on the fact that it was outside of ours and others reasonable sort of areas because of what had taken place."

IND vs ENG | 1st T20: Preparation for World T20 adds context to white-ball extravaganza

After the battle of attrition, and a sheer dominance by the Indian team around flowing accusations and counter-accusations over the quality of pitches in the series, the sides will welcome the prospect of the white-ball series. India picked up their momentum after facing a huge loss in the first Test of the series, while England floundered their early advantage, owing to some poor selection calls and ineptitude against spin bowling. England were also ridiculed by experts and former cricketers for rotating and resting around players and not fielding their best possible XI after the first Test, while India attacked them will all their best possible resources. Contrastingly in the T20 series, it will be England who will at full strength with the likes of Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy coming to India and this series, while India will miss some of their first-choice players due to injuries or personal reasons along While both England and India will have their one eye on the coveted prize of the T20 World Cup, their objectives in the upcoming series could not be more contrasting. England have come in this series with a goal of finetuning their best possible XI and finding out their possible plan of action for the global tournament, Virat Kohli and the Indian team management will use this series to settle in on a perfect squad given they have a problem of plenty at their hands. India will miss the services of Jasprit Bumrah, their and one of the best bowler in the T20 format, Ravindra Jadeja, who has leapfrogged as a genuine all-rounder over the past few years, and also Mohammed Shami, who has developed a good yorker to serve him well in the shortest format. On the other hand, England will have at their full-strengths after Jos Buttler, and Moeen Ali have returned to India for the series. England at full strength for the T20 and ODI series following the Test series where the tourists were seen rotating players and sending them back home to give them rest amid a gruelling schedule this year also attracted many criticisms from commentariat on the question of format the ECB and England team management are preferring to win this year. India vs England: Match Details Match No.-01 Date and Time: March 12, 07:00 PM IST, 01:30 PM GMT Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad Broadcast and Live Stream: Star Sports, Hotstar Pitch conditions The first T20I between India and England will be the first international T20 game to be played at the recently-renamed Narendra Modi Stadium. If the shreds of evidence from the recently-concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy are anything to go by, England should hope for nothing but an extended trial by spin after the Test series. The knockout stage of India’s domestic T20 tournament was played at this ground, and spinners tasted a huge amount of success on surfaces that supported turn from the word go. Team News India The absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Jadeja, along with ambiguity over the bowling fitness of Hardik Pandya have created a sense of quagmire for the Indian team management in the series. However, this opens up new waves of opportunity for the fringe players to step up their game and stake claim for a place in the squad for the World T20. They have handed maiden call ups to deserving players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Rahul Tewatia and they are likely to be given opportunities at some point in the series as India are looking to lock various key positions that are still open in the playing XI. However, Tewatia has missed the fitness Test and most likely will sit out from the first game of the series. There is intense competition in the batting order, especially for the second opener and the batsman for the number four slot in the playing XI. Kohli and Ravi Shastri will have their task cut out in leaving one of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul while for the number four slot, the choice will have to be taken for one of Suryakumar Yadav, Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. The absence of Jadeja and Hardik’s issues with fitness will hand over Axar Patel an excellent opportunity to impress the captain and selectors while Shardul Thakur can also claim a place in the playing XI for his capabilities of providing blit in the latter part of the innings. Strongest XI Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Chahar/Navdeep Saini England There are no injury concerns and neither any doubts about the four batsmen at the top of the order for England with the likes of Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow having done enough on the previous occasion to cement their places. Bairstow has been in torrid form with the bat in Tests against India, but he has shown the independence of his batting form from one format to another and it should not be a case fo concern for the tourists for the shortest format. The batting order picks itself as Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan have relegated themselves down the order to provide the flourishes end while setting up or chasing big scores and the role for the duo is unlikely to change in the five-match series against India. Young guns such as Liam Livingstone and Sam Billings have put up their names in the reckoning for places in the team on the back of dominant performances in the Big Bash League, but the top order is too settled to be shaken up their performances as of now. England’s all-format talisman with the ball Jofra Archer has been under an injury cloud and the uncertainties around the recurrence of his elbow injury remain hovering over the T20 side. The pacer had missed the two Tests against India due to his injury and is a doubtful starter for the first game of the series. Archer’s pain can be a massive gain for the likes of Reece Topley and tom Curran. Strongest XI Jason Roy, Jos Buttler (wk), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Eoin Morgan (c), Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid

CSK rope in two Sri Lankan bowlers

The Chennai Super Kings have started the preparations for the Indian Premier League in Chennai. The Chennai franchise has called up a couple of Sri Lankan bowlers, Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana to make additions to the reserved squads. Pathirana who has a bowling action similar to that of MI and Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga can hit the deck at very high speeds.
