Michael Vaughan questions Chris Silverwood for his non-interference in the Lord's Test

Coming from well behind, India registered an exceptional victory in the 2nd Test against England at Lord’s by 151 runs to take a 1-0 lead with three matches still to go. However, when the final day of the Test started, England looked the clear favourites to close out the game.

It became more realistic when English skipper Joe Root employed strange tactics which eventually led to an astonishing comeback from the Indian lower order duo of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.

The English fast bowlers kept bowling short which actually played into the hands of Shami and Bumrah. Shami went onto score an unbeaten 56 while Bumrah was undefeated on 34.

Bumrah was hit on the helmet twice but defied all the odds by taking on the challenge and ended up with a vital contribution for his team. For these bizarre tactics from Root, former English skipper turned analyst Michael Vaughan came hard at the coach Chris Silverwood for his non-interference on that entire matter.

“The nadir came in that hour and 20 minutes before lunch on the fifth day of the second Test, which must rank among the worst stuff I’ve seen from an England Test team in years. Why was Silverwood not sending someone out onto the pitch with a drink, asking Root what the hell was going on and getting him to change tactics? I know that is what Duncan Fletcher would have done with me had I suffered a brain-fade on the field,” wrote Vaughan on his Facebook page.

India managed to secure a lead of 271 runs in the second innings, ruling out a chance of an England win. With just 60 overs left in the day’s play, the pace quartet of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled their heart out managing to bowl out England for just 120 runs with more than 8 overs left.

England suffered a heavy 151-run defeat at Lord’s and must come back strongly in order to level the series. The 3rd Test match will be played at Headingly, Leeds starting from the 25th of August. The first Test match between these two teams ended up in a stalemate as rain intervened on the final day.

Tymal Mills deserves England return says James Vince

He was able to do all this with his ability to change the pace of the ball at his will and the Vince considered it as something that would be really helpful for the English team in the Gulf during the T20 World Cup. “To have the change of pace that he has, to bowl 90 mph and the slower ball with that accuracy, it makes him incredibly tough to face. He has been so reliable, he knows what he wants and that makes it easy for anyone to captain,” said the Brave skipper who would now be leading Hampshire in the T20 Blat Quarter Finals on August 25. Pujara or Rahane should make way for Suryakumar Yadav feels Farokh Engineer

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Farokh Engineer has backed Suryakumar Yadav to make his Test debut in the 3rd Test against England which is slated to be played at Headingley from 25th August. Engineer wants Suryakumar Yadav to be included in the XI at the expense of Cheteshwar Pujara or vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Both these batters are not going through the best of runs in the recent past. However, in the Test at Lord’s, the experienced duo shared an important century stand which ensured India recovered from a precarious situation following the loss of Virat Kohli’s wicket. While Rahane scored a 146 balls 61, Pujara also fought his way through to 45. However, Engineer still feels that SKY should be included in the XI at the expense of either of them. "Firstly, I am a huge fan of Suryakumar Yadav. I think he is a class player. I would certainly prefer him to Pujara or Rahane. They are class players, very good players, but Suryakumar Yadav is a match-winner. With Shreyas Iyer out of the team with injury, I think Suryakumar should certainly be in the team. He is an aggressive player; he will get you a quick hundred, a quick 70-80. He is a fabulous batsman, fabulous fielder and a wonderful human being as well," Engineer was quoted as saying by Sports Tak. Meanwhile, Surykumar Yadav was rewarded with a place in the Test team after impressing in the shorter formats. He and Prithvi Shaw completed their quarantine and joined the team at Lord’s. SLC not aware of Hasaranga, Chameera signing IPL 2021 contracts

The Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva has said that the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s latest recruits Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera haven’t taken any permission from the SLC to be a part of the IPL. Moreover, the governing body isn’t aware of the signings of the two players. "I don't know, I have to check. We are under lockdown till the end of the month," de Silva told Cricbuzz. "We have not taken any decision yet as they will have to apply for the NOCs. We are not aware of these players being selected, neither have they sought permission from us,” he added. The RCB had announced on Saturday that the franchise has roped in Hasaranga, Chameera and Tim David for the remaining fixtures of the IPL 2021 which will now be held in the UAE from September 19. Hasaranga, the number two T20I bowler in ICC rankings had replaced Australia’s Adam Zampa while Chameera had come in for pacer Daniel Sams in the squad. The IPL would resume on the above-mentioned dates where Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will lock horns with each other and the Final would be played on October 15, two days before the beginning of the World T20 which will be co-hosted by the UAE and Oman. The IPL was earlier suspended on May 4 after there was a Covid-19 outburst within the franchises.

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has backed The Hundred tournament to come back “bigger and better” in the next edition. “We are coming back bigger and better next year,” Pietersen said in a post-match show after the Final of both men’s and women’s final on Saturday. The Southern Brave side lifted the inaugural trophy in the men’s tournament after beating Birmingham Phoenix in the final clash by 32 runs at Lord’s. Chasing 169 in 100 balls, Birmingham were restricted to 138/5. Liam Livingstone top-scored for the side with 46 off 19 while captain Moeen Ali chipped in with 36 off 30. Earlier, Southern Brave rode on a half-century from Stirling and an unbeaten 19-ball 44 from Ross Whiteley to post 168/5 in the allotted 100 balls. The Southern Brave captain James Vince lauded Stirling’s efforts with the bat after the match. Paul Stirling and Whiteley were exceptional. Bowlers put in a clinic in the second half there. Stirling getting himself off to a good start and then playing a match-winning innings was superb,” he said. In the women’s competition, it was Oval Invincibles who defeated Southern Brave by 48 runs to clinch the title. The Oval side managed to score 121/6 and then the bowlers rattled the Southern Brave batting line up to bundle them out for 73. Invincibles captain Dane van Niekerk expressed her delight at the win. “I have no words at the moment. If you told me that would happen at the end of the day, I would have taken it. Credit to Southern Brave, they have been incredible. We had to rock up today to beat a very good side,” she said.
