Mark Boucher charged with gross misconduct amid racism row

Cricket South Africa (CSA) publicly laid gross misconduct charges on the men's national team head coach Mark Boucher after he was accused of racism last year by his former teammate Paul Adams.

As Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) looked into the allegations made by Adams, a 235-page interim report was submitted in December that included big names of Proteas cricket such as Boucher and AB de Villiers.

"While Mr Boucher is being charged with gross misconduct, which could lead to his dismissal, CSA emphasises it is important that the independent inquiry first needs to test all allegations before any question of sanction can arise," CSA released a statement.

Following the findings, Senior Counsel Advocate Terry Motau has been appointed as the chairperson of the disciplinary hearing and he will lead the charges of misconduct laid on the Proteas’ head coach.

"The Board remains mindful of its duty to treat allegations of racism or discrimination with the utmost seriousness and in a manner that ensures fairness and due process in terms of South Africa's Constitution and labour legislation," CSA Board Chairperson Lawson Naidoo said as quoted by the Times of India.

"It is now up to the inquiry to determine to which extent the allegations are true and justify the need for further disciplinary steps. CSA emphasises that any implicated party will be given a fair opportunity to be heard so that finality can be achieved," Naidoo added.

While Boucher emphasised focusing on the role of head coach, he asserted that the allegations directed at him will be dealt with in due course of time.

"I look forward to dealing with and defending these allegations which have been made and will do so at the hearing in due course. For now I am solely focused on my duties as head coach of the Proteas," Boucher said.

For the unversed, Boucher was accused of using derogatory language by Adams for which the former cricketer has already apologised.

Ganguly breaks silence on sending show-cause notice to Kohli

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has broken his silence on the matter of him sending a showcase notice to former India skipper Virat Kohli. The matter pertains to Kohli in a press conference denying being discussed with, his removal from ODI captaincy. Earlier Ganguly in a chat with a private TV news channel had said that Kohli was on board with Rohit Sharma being appointed Team India's ODI captain along with him remaining the T20I captain. The T20I captaincy was relinquished by Kohli in 2021 as he had announced before the start of the T20 World Cup that this will be his last assignment in the shortest format as India captain. It was after Kohli denied that he was spoken to before being removed from ODI captaincy and then Chetan Sharma, the head of the senior selection committee doing a press conference and said that BCCI will respond appropriately to Kohli’s denial that rumours of a show-cause notice being sent to the then India Test skipper started appearing in the media. Responding to a question from news agency ANI on whether it was true that he will be sending a show-cause notice to Virat, Ganguly said, "Not true." Earlier this month, Kohli also stepped down from his position as India Test captain after a 2-1 loss against South Africa in a three-match series.

Women's Ashes 2022: Second T20I abandoned after rain plays spoilsport

Rain played a spoilsport during the second T20Is between Australian women and England women in Adelaide in the multi-format Ashes. England who were batting first had put 25/0 in 4.1 overs with Danielle Wyatt at 14* off 12 balls while Tammy Beaumont at 6* in 14 balls. Australia are presently leading the three-match T20Is 1-0 after they clinched a victory in the first encounter by 9 wickets in Adelaide. They chased down a target of 170 runs. West Indies captain Kieron Pollard has said that the side needs to focus on the batting at the moment as that is the weak link. "We need to improve the way we play, because our batting has definitely been a problem for us," Pollard said. The right-handed cricketer further talked about the captaincy and how West Indies cricket is more about getting better and grooming the young talents. "Before the World Cup, there was no noise about the captaincy, but because of the campaign that transpired, it is necessary," he said. "In each and every tournament that you have, whether it's the World Cup or the Ashes, you expect casualties." "If I'm not the right person to lead, then so it, but cricket in the West Indies is not about Kieron Pollard.
