The experienced Sussex batsman Luke Wright has stepped down from the club’s T20 captaincy after serving the role for seven seasons. Sussex reached the semifinal stage in the T20 blast last year under his visionary leadership. Although the club has a really good win/loss record in his tenure, somehow, they haven’t been able to lift the trophy, which will certainly remain as a void in Wright’s resume as a captain.
On announcing his decision of quitting the T20 captaincy of Sussex, the all-time leading run-scorer in the T20 Blast history Luke Wright has said that it has been an honour for him to lead the Hove-based cricket club and he will continue to give his best as a player in the upcoming seasons.
“It has been a huge honour to captain Sussex, the club I love so much. However, I feel it is the right time to step down. I will continue to give my all to help Sussex as I have over so many years,” Wright said.
On the other hand, Sussex have stated to be disappointed on Wright’s call, but the club respects his decision. The chief executive of the club Mr. Rob Andrew has acknowledged the services of Wright and expects that the former captain will guide his successor in every aspect in order to help the club reach new heights.
“Luke has been a fantastic captain, leading the team to the knockout stages of the T20 Blast in five of his seven seasons as captain, including two Finals Day appearances in 2018 and 2021. The experience and knowledge he will be able to share with his successor will be invaluable,” Andrew said. “We respect Luke’s decision to step down as captain and we will work with him to move forward and focus on the future with his successor at the helm,” he further added.
Talking about Sussex, the Hove-based County side has recently signed some really handy players including Mohammad Rizwan, Josh Philippe and Steve Finn, with Rashid Khan also set to be available for them throughout the group stages.
