Three Sri Lanka players Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, and Niroshan Dickwella are likely to be banned for at least one-year and would have to pay hefty fines depending upon their inquiries for bio-bubble breach in the UK. The trio will miss the upcoming limited-overs fixtures against India at home.
Speaking to news agency AFP an official from the Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed about the development and said that if found guilty, there is no escaping the ban for the trio. The investigation is scheduled to begin after the players complete their mandatory 14-day quarantine period.
"They are likely to get a minimum one-year suspension if found guilty of several breaches of their contract," the official said in conditions of anonymity.
The three cricketers were earlier suspended on Monday, 28 June, by Sri Lanka Cricket for the same reason and were asked to fly back home.
"Sri Lanka Cricket executive committee has suspended Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka & Niroshan Dickwella for breaching the bio- bubble and they will be immediately recalled to Sri Lanka," SLC secretary Mohan De Silva said in a statement.
Mendis and Dickwella were spotted roaming around on the streets of Durham in a video that had gone viral on social media. “An investigation is underway as they have breached the (code of) conduct,” said SLC chief Shammi Silva.
Sri Lanka are presently touring England for a three-match T20i series and as many ODIs.
The visitors suffered a thumping 0-3 defeat in the T20Is and their batting woes continued in the first ODI as well after getting bundled out for 185 in less than 43 overs.
England eventually won the match by 5 wickets.
