KL Rahul recall events before he was asked to fill in Virat's shoes

Stylish Indian opener KL Rahul has revealed that he was taken aback when former Test skipper Virat Kohli came up to him on the morning of a Test match to tell him that he would have to lead the side in his absence.

The Test match Rahul is referring to was the 2nd game of the three-match series during the recent tour of South Africa.

Having taken a 1-0 lead following a thumping win at SuperSport Park in Centurion, India went to Johannesburg brimming with confidence.

The second Test was supposed to be Kohli's 99th match but everyone was taken aback at the toss when they didn't see the former skipper walk out with the Proteas skipper.

It was later revealed that Kohli had opted out of the Test due to a back spasm- an issue that has grappled him in the last two to three years.

With Rohit Sharma not available for the entire series due to a hamstring injury, KL Rahul was Kohli's deputy for the Test rubber.

Recalling the events of the morning of the game when Virat came up to him to arise of the same, Rahul said, "Like everyone else, it came to me as a huge surprise to me. I was the vice-captain. As a vice-captain you slowly prepare yourself to become the captain in due time.

“But then I didn’t expect it to come to me so quickly and in such circumstances: the morning of the game, Virat (Kohli) came to me in the bus and said, ‘My back is not feeling great, you might have to captain the team,” said Rahul during a chat on the Red Bull Cricket Room, hosted by Clubhouse.

Rahul further added that the additional pressure of leading the side in such an important Test didn't put me off but admitted that it was a proud feeling for him to see ‘C’ against his name.

"It didn’t put me off or my mindset didn’t change a lot. All of us, in some way or the other, when we play the game we are our own captain and in our head, we are playing situations like we are a captain.

“When that ‘C’ in the team list comes, it does feel new and it is something you are proud of. It's an honour not many people get and it is something you always dream of and I was very happy, very grateful,” concluded the stylish opener.

Unfortunately, for KL and Team India, it did not prove to be a happy outing as a resurgent South Africa turned the tables on the N0.1 ranked Test side in the world by chasing down 240 in the fourth innings.

The home side also went on to win the next Test in Cape Town to ensure that Kohli's final assignment as Test skipper ended in heartbreak.

Rahul also captained India in the three-match ODI series, which he ended up losing 0-3.

Not a big deal: Pat Cummins on permanent saliva ban

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins on the eve of the third Test against Pakistan has said that permanent ban on the use of saliva on cricket balls is not a big deal. The tearaway fast bowler who has been in excellent form despite the batting friendly tracks in Pakistan stated that he didn’t think that it made drastic changes in terms of managing the ball. “I don’t think it has made a huge effect, as big as we might have thought it would. We still use sweat so it’s not too big a deal.” Notably, the use of saliva was banned from all forms of cricket after the onset of the novel Coronavirus pandemic and later the guardians of the cricketing law, Marylebone Cricket Club found out in their investigation that saliva does not have much impact in ball management vis-a-vis the use of sweat. Cummins’ Australia will be up against Pakistan for the third and final Test match starting Monday. The first two Test matches have been flat tracks with bowlers toiling for days on dead pitches. Australia tried their very best and worked tremendously as a unit to eke a result out of the second Test match, but were unable to eke out a result as Babar Azam stood tall and churned out a fantastic 196 in the final innings of the game. This is Cummins’ final assignment for the national team before focus shifts to the Indian Premier League where he will be part of the core group for Kolkata Knight Riders. When asked, Cummins spoke about how he got on well with Shreyas Iyer during his time in Delhi Capitals and that he was very excited to be playing for the Kolkata based franchise who are looking for their third IPL trophy after their loss in the finals last season.

IND vs SL | Bangalore pitch rated ‘below average’ by ICC

The International Cricket Council has rated the pitch used for the India-Sri Lanka Test match in Bangalore as ‘below average’. The M Chinnaswamy stadium hosted Virat Kohli’s 101st Test match starting March 12. While Indian fans cheered for Virat Kohli to make a century - one that has been long awaited from the maestro - their hopes were shattered by a track that seemed to turn square from day one. Former Indian cricketer and match referee Javagal Srinath noted the same and stated that it was not an even contest between the bat and ball. “The pitch offered a lot of turn on the first day itself and though it improved with every session, in my view, it was not an even contest between bat and ball.” India escaped a grim fate after losing four quick wickets as the duo of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer held the innings together and counterattacked their way out of trouble. Eight wickets were taken by spinners in the first innings of the game with Lasith Embuldeniya, Praveen Jayawickrama and Dhananjaya de Silva running riot against the Indian batting. Once India were all out at 252 owing to a stunning 92 from Iyer, Sri Lanka found further troubles while coming into bat under the lights. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami presented an exceptional show reducing Sri Lanka to 85/6 at the end of day’s play. 16 wickets fell on day one, 9 off which came off spinners. The M Chinnaswamy stadium has incurred one demerit point based on the valuation of the match referee and now have to avoid further sanctions in the next five years. If the stadium accumulates 5 demerit points or more, they will be banned for hosting any matches for the next 12 months from the day of sanction.
