On Friday, England's limited overs captain Jos Buttler entered the club of highest run-getters for England in international matches. Buttler got past legendary opener Marcus Trescothick to position himself on the 10th pedestal.

He achieved this milestone during England's first ODI against New Zealand at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Former opening batter Trescothick played 268 innings, accumulating 10326 runs at an astonishing average of 40.97, with 26 centuries and 52 half centuries to his name. In a career spanning over six overs, he was a brutal batting force who went after bowlers gently.

The southpaw's career ended abruptly due to his illness. His record eventually got broken by another prominent England cap from Somerset, with Buttler getting there in 339 innings, scoring 14 centuries and 63 fifties for his country across formats.

Compared with Trescothick, Buttler has a much better strike rate of 92.09. During the series opener, Buttler struck 72 off 68 balls, beating the southpaw in the list and stand at 10392* runs. Coming at number 5, the keeper-batter built a solid partnership with Ben Stokes, helping England post a competitive total. But eventually, the Kiwis secured a thumping win, riding on the batting heroics of Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway.

Ahead of Buttler, only two current England internationals are present on the list. Joe Root is sitting at the top with 18522 runs, and Jonny Bairstow is placed ninth with 10950 runs . It is expected to have a cat-and-mouse chase between Bairstow and Buttler as both are attacking batters and stand a chance to outscore the other in coming fixtures.

Meanwhile, Buttler and his boys will meet New Zealand again tomorrow at Southampton. The World champions will look to bounce back as they are trailing by 0-1 in the series.
