In the latest development, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has officially approved a proposal to name one of their stands at the Wankhede Stadium after India captain, Rohit Sharma. Earlier, there were speculations regarding the same, but the rumours came true as on Wednesday, MCA's official handle posted the confirmation.

The decision was made during the Association's Annual General Meeting on April 15, Tuesday. Additionally, two more stands will be named after former BCCI President Sharad Pawar and former India and Mumbai batter, Ajit Wadekar.

Which stand will be named after Rohit?

  • As per the MCA, The Grand Stand Level 3 will be named after Sharad Pawar
  • Divecha Level Pavilion 3 will be named after India captain Rohit Sharma
  • Grand Stand Level 4 will be named after Ajit Wadekar.

Which other former Indian cricketers have stands named after them?

Apart from Rohit Sharma, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Vijay Merchant have stands named after them at the Wankhede. Rohit has a great history with the Wankhede Stadium and even for the IPL side, Mumbai Indians, he plays at Wankhede and has memorable wins.

Playing for the team, he has helped them win 5 IPL titles and also turned Wankhede into a fortress.

The reason to name a stand after Rohit came up after he helped India win the T20 World Cup last year and the Champions Trophy last month. On both the occasions, he was the captain of the team.
