IPL 2022 | Tripathi's sensational knock & Bhuvi's death bowling masterclass guide SRH to win in a high-scoring thriller

Rahul Tripathi's whirlwind knock and a masterclass in death bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar has helped Sunrisers Hyderabad edge out the Mumbai Indians by three runs in a high-scoring thriller at Wankhede.

For Mumbai, it was once again a case of batsmen getting in but not doing enough to make a decisive difference in the end.

Chasing 194, it was pretty evident that the former champions desperately needed to make the most of the power play, which they did by getting to 51/0. Rohit and Ishan added 95 runs in just over 10 overs, with the latter chipping in with a 34-ball 43.

Rohit once again looked at his effortless best, but as has been the case throughout his career, the opener flattered to deceive as he holed out for a 36-ball 48 during an attempt to hammer Washington Sundar over mid-wicket.

Sharma's wicket was soon followed by a spell from Umran Malik, who recovered well after a poor first over to dismiss Kishan, Daniel Sams (15 off 11 deliveries) and Tilak Varma (8 off 9 deliveries) and swing the game in favour of his team.

Umran finished with figures of 3/23 in three overs, but with the dangerous Tim David at the crease, one could not write off Mumbai.

And the hard-hitting right-hander proved that in the next few overs as he took full toll on T Natarajan, who endured a forgettable day at the office on Tuesday evening.

David started off by smashing Natarajan for a couple of 4s in the 16th over but the real picture started in the next over when he smoked the left-arm seamer for four sixes.

However, Natarajan (0/60 in 4 overs) had the last laugh as he ran David (46 off 18 deliveries) at the non-striker end to hammer the final blow in MI's coffin.

Amid all this, Bhuvneshwar was brilliant as ever. The champion seamer put on another death bowling masterclass as he conceded just 9 runs in two overs, which includes a wicket-maiden penultimate over.

That eventually proved to be the difference in the end as SRH got home by the skin of their teeth despite a final over assault from Ramandeep.

Belligerent knocks from Rahul Tripathi, Priyam Garg, Nicholas Pooran guide SRH to a big total

Earlier, Sunrisers' Hyderabad's decision to promote Priyam Garg at the top of the order in place of Kane Williamson paid dividends as the former U-19 captain smashed a whirlwind 26-ball 42.

Sunrisers lost an in-form Abhishek Sharma cheaply (9 off 10 deliveries) thanks to Daniel Sams, but it didn't deter their innings as Garg and Rahul Tripathi (76 off 44 deliveries) took the attack to the Mumbai bowlers.

The duo ensured that SRH finished the powerplay with as many as 57 runs on the board. Tripathi was the major aggressor among the duo. The stylish right-handed batsman laid into Jasprit Bumrah in the 5th over, smashing the champion pacer for a couple of fours and a six.

He dealt the same treatment to debutant Sanjay Yadav while Priyam took care of Sams, hammering him for a couple of fours and a six.

Tripathi and Priyam added 78 runs for the 2nd wicket in just over 7 overs before Ramandeep Singh got rid of the latter via a return-catch.

The onslaught, however, continued as Nicholas Pooran joined the fun with Tripathi.

Tripathi, en route to a 32-ball fifty, ensured that the tempo of the innings never dropped, and he was ably helped by Pooran, who smoked as many as three sixes and two fours to race to 38 off just 22 deliveries.

Tripathi continued to unleash some lusty blows at the expense of Sams and Meredith before eventually holing out to Tilak Varma off the bowling of Ramandeep.

Pooran and Markram both fell around the same time, and Williamson could only manage 8 off 7 deliveries, meaning SRH only scored 20 runs in their last 3 overs.

They finished at 193/6, which eventually proved to be just enough in the end.
