IPL 2022 | Too much chopping and changing under Virat Kohli affected RCB: Virender Sehwag

After two seasons of failing to qualify beyond Eliminator 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have managed to defy the odds and reach the Qualifiers 2 stage of the tournament under the leadership of Faf du Plessis.

In this edition, the South African, who took over from Virat Kohli, brought in newer ideas and approaches to the setup, eventually qualifying for the playoffs and finishing fourth in the table.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag, who has always been very vocal about his views, has said that RCB has been more consistent this season, while under Kohli, they changed and chopped their XI a lot, which hampered their progress.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, "The arrival of Sanjay Bangar as head coach and a new captain (Faf du Plessis) has changed RCB's thinking. Virat Kohli had a thought process. If a player did not play well in two or three matches, he used to drop a player from the playing XI,"

"That has not happened this time. But Bangar and Du Plessis have kept the team almost consistent throughout. Except for Anuj Rawat, who had played the initial matches and was replaced by Rajat Patidar, I don't think they made any changes due to poor performance,"

"In bowling, they may have interchanged a spinner or a fast bowler, depending on the condition. They were not changed due to performance. This has been the change with the arrival of Sanjay Bangar and Faf du Plessis. There was too much chopping and changing under Virat Kohli's captaincy and under different coaches. That has changed."

RCB won 66 and lost 70 T20s of the 140 matches. Kohli led them from 2011 to 2021, whereas four games ended in no results. Nevertheless, the former India captain managed to reach the playoffs four times, finishing as runner-up once in 2016 and in the third position in 2015.

The swashbuckling opener from Najafgarh explained what process Faf is doing differently from Kohli.

"Virat Kohli himself gave a statement that sometimes he gives Faf, so advice, but ultimately the South African goes by his own thinking. If an Indian player had been captain and if Virat Kohli had given him some advice, he might have had to accept it under pressure. So, this is what has changed with du Plessis as captain," concluded the 43-year-old.

RCB, after winning the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Wednesday evening (May 25), will now head to Ahmedabad to meet the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Friday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Qualifier 2.

The winner of Qualifier 2 will meet Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL final on Sunday.

'Will come back stronger': Gautam Gambhir hails the LSG team for their maiden IPL stint

When it comes to the 2022 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), the inclusion of two new teams - Gujarat Titans (GT) & Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), made the tournament more intriguing and competitive. One of the key takeaways from this league wouldn't just be the players displaying their top-notch game and talent, but the team's coaching department’s dedication and commitment was for everyone to see. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir took over the mentorship position at Lucknow camp and has been phenomenal with them. Not just providing some critical feedback to the player but showing his aggression and rejoicing in the dugout during the team's success. He has been one of the pivotal backbones behind the new franchise's successful IPL season, leading them to the playoffs. Under the guidance of Andy Flower and Gambhir's mentorship, LSG has been phenomenal in the league stages of the tournament by winning eight matches out of 14. But things didn't favour them in their first playoffs stint. Facing the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator match on Wednesday, they weren't good enough to stop them, who have now progressed to the second Qualifiers. Conceding a humongous total of 208, thanks to Rajat Patidar's century (112* runs off 54 balls), Lucknow failed to chase their target and lost the match by 14 runs. Rahul and Deepak Hooda have shown their efforts with the bat but in vain. Predominantly known for his practical and straightforward approach to the game, the two-time world cup winning opener believed in his ways and was impressed with the new team's efforts. Indeed, it would be their memorable first tournament for the franchise. After losing the eliminator match, Gambhir took to Instagram to appreciate the team's efforts. "Hard luck today but a great tournament for our new team. We'll come back stronger. Until we meet again!" read the caption on his recent Instagram post. After the Eliminator, RCB would be taking over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the second Qualifier in Ahmedabad on 27th May. The winner of the game meets Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final on Sunday.

Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam fined 25% of match fees for throwing the ball at Angelo Mathews

Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct and was fined 25% of his match fees after the third day’s play of the ongoing Test match in Dhaka. During the game, the spinner lost his cool and was penalized by ICC for throwing the ball towards Angelo Mathews, despite the Lankan batter being well inside the crease. On Wednesday (May 25th), the incident happened during the 69th over of Day 3 in the ongoing second Test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Sri Lanka was at 194 for four after 68 overs, with Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva looking to build a partnership. Mathews was batting on 21 off 69 when he started the 69th over with a boundary towards wide mid-wicket. He again went on to cut the ball through Point after a couple of deliveries but failed to clear the fielder. Following this, Taijul came back tossing up, making Mathews go for a drive. The ball went rolling to the former, who shied away and threw the ball back, which hit straight at the latter on the bounce. The Sri Lankan raised his right hand to save himself and got a hit on his thumb. Islam, who apologized to the Sri Lankan immediately, was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match. In addition, the 30-year-old was also handed a demerit point in his disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in 24 months. On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Sharfuddola, third umpire Richard Kettleborough and fourth official Gazi Sohel did the needful as Taijul himself admitted his mistake and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Chris Broad.
