IPL 2022 | SRH vs LSG | Jaded Hyderabad stumble after Hooda, Avesh rise Lucknow to a win

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) shirked a win from Sunrisers Hyderabad's hands, beating them by 12 runs in the 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

While Hyderabad seemed to be cruising in the run-chase, Lucknow pulled back the game dramatically in their corner in the final stages of the match.

En route to a target of 170 runs, Hyderabad threw it away as their captain Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma failed to keep on going after a good start. Rahul Tripathi came at number three and majestically found gaps to get the scoreboard moving. Tripathi, along with Pooran, had almost seen SRH through, but the former's wicket tilted the game a bit.

However, Pooran continued to play his shots. The West Indian looked in fine touch but lost his wicket at the wrong time, courtesy of Avesh Khan's magic. Avesh dismissed the dangerous Abdul Samad in the very next delivery as SRH pressed on their mandatory panic button.

Pooran and Samad's dismissal brought a major twist in the tale as the Sunrisers choked in the final overs, and Lucknow did a jailbreak to steal a 12-run victory.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants had a nervy start while batting as Washington Sundar stood tall with the ball in the powerplay and gained early breakthroughs in the form of Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis. Sundar brought his old touch back and revived his knack for bowling tight spells in the initial overs.

At first, Skipper KL Rahul and explosive Deepak Hooda steadied the innings, but the latter went bonkers after getting his eye in. Unfortunately for Umran Malik, he came in Hooda's radar as the Haryana-born smashed the fiery pacer all over the park.

While Rahul played the second-fiddle to Hooda, he also upped the ante in the end part of his 68-run knock. Ayush Badoni, who so far has been top-notch, fared well even today and played a useful 12-ball innings, scoring 19 runs. Jason Holder came up with a handy performance and smashed a six off the final over to help Lucknow post a total of 169 runs.

Brief scores:

'Never thought they could win the Cup'- Anjum Chopra on Indian Women's team CWC exit

Former cricketer and veteran broadcaster Anjum Chopra believes that the Indian women's team needs to emerge from the 'legacy of poor decision-making' to become one of the world's top sides. India's World Cup campaign ended on a heartbreaking note as they lost a must-win game against South Africa by one run to bow out of the competition in the league stage itself. Speaking to PTI following a poor World Cup campaign, Chopra reckoned that it's not a poor on-field performance that cost the Women in Blue, but it's their inability to adapt to the conditions despite being in the country for so long and poor decision making that cost the Mithali Raj-led unit. She said: "It is time women's cricket emerges from legacy of poor decision making and be honest about what they want to do and how they want to do going forward. Otherwise, we will remain a near about team, we will never get there," "I won't say India played poorly. However, they played a few ordinary matches where they could have performed better," she added. India played six white-ball internationals against hosts New Zealand. While they lost five out of those six games, they were still expected to be better prepared in terms of team combination and adaptability to conditions. In this regard, Anjum was surprised at the approach of the batting unit against Pakistan and Raj's decision to bowl first against New Zealand. Chopra added further that she never thought India was a genuine contender for the title. "It is not just players who need to take responsibility. It is everyone, including support staff, who should take the responsibility. It is not about crucifying one person. Of course, you will always have bad days, but India was simply not consistent enough," she said. "As a player and broadcaster, from 1997 to 2022, I have seen every final and every semifinal. I never thought they could win the Cup but expected them to make the semis," Chopra concluded. She signed off by stating that India will remain near about side until they start focusing on the basics, including running between the wickets and fielding. India failed to win a single game against the SENA countries in the World Cup. Their victories came against Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies.

"Glad there’s a shift of mindset towards spin bowling"- Keshav Maharaj after super feat against Bangladesh

South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has expressed his delight at the shift in the general attitude of the Proteas cricket eco-system towards the spinners. Maharaj made his comments on a day where he, along with his partner Simon Harmer, ran through Bangladesh's batting unit to hand South Africa a massive 220-run win in the first Test at Durban. The wily left-armer returned with unbelievable figures of 7/32 in 10 overs, while Harmer claimed the remaining three wickets to bowl the Asian Tigers out for their second-lowest total in Test history. It's extremely rare for South African spinners to call the shots in a home Test, and that too in such dominating fashion. For Maharaj, the moment was particularly emotional as he had his entire family watching from the stadium. He also thanked his domestic side 'Dolphins' for their continued support over the years. "I am glad there's a shift of mindset towards spin bowling in our country. Very happy for Simon. You can't take Test wins for granted, back to the drawing-room from tomorrow. Both my parents are here, my sister, nieces and nephews, special moment for me. I love playing at home. The Dolphins have been very good for me. I am very grateful to put in a performance for them today," said Maharaj during the post-match presentation. The off-spinner returned wicketless despite bowling 37 overs in the first innings. The left-hander stated that he took lessons from his first dig; he understood the importance of being patient with his line and length. It ultimately paid dividends for him. "Quite emotional, playing at home is always special. Glad that I could take the team over the line. It's just about being patient with line and length for long periods of time. Simon provided control, and that helped me. As cricketers, we are impatient at times. The hard work from the first innings paid dividends in the second," he added. Thanks to a mammoth 220-run win, South Africa has picked another 12 valuable World Test Championship points and moved to the second spot on the table. They will look to cap off a successful home summer with another victory when they lock horns with Bangladesh in the 2nd Test at Port Elizabeth from April 8.
