IPL 2022 | SKY likely to miss season opener against Delhi Capitals

Suryakumar Yadav may miss the first Mumbai Indians match of the season following a thumb injury he suffered during the final T20I of the three-match series against West Indies last month. A report in the ESPNcricinfo suggests that he is still continuing his recovery at the National Cricket Academy.

The 31-year-old picked up a hairline fracture on his thumb while playing in the final T20I against West Indies on February 22. He went to Bangalore for rehabilitation following the same but is yet to be released by the NCA. Mumbai Indians will miss the services of Suryakuamar Yadav, therefore in their opening match of the season, scheduled to be played on March 27 against Delhi Capitals.

Suryakumar, Mumbai’s second-highest run-getter last season, was one of the four players to be retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction this year. One of the mainstays of the Mumbai batting line-up, Suryakumar scored 317 runs in IPL 2021 at a strike rate of 143.43 and an average of 22 despite the team failing to qualify for the playoffs. So no wonder Mumbai decided to retain him along with Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kieron Pollard.

This will be a huge loss for Mumbai Indians as they do not have any specialist Indian batter in the side apart from the captain Rohit Sharma and their biggest purchase from the auction, Ishan Kishan.
