IPL 2022 | 'I’m certainly working hard and trying to play a role for the team' - Williamson

Sunrisers Hyderabad succumbed to their third successive defeat on Thursday night courtesy of a 21-run hammering at the hands of Delhi Capitals.

One of the major talking points following the defeat has once again been the poor form of their skipper Kane Williamson.

The opening batter has looked like a pale shadow of his former self this season. In 10 outings, Williamson had managed just 199 runs, and he is striking at a touch under 100.

Williamson managed a painstaking 11-ball 4 against Delhi. After the game, he was asked about his woeful form by the host broadcaster.

He said, "You always want more runs and I'm certainly working hard and trying to play a role for the team, staying patient and committed to my own game. It's one of those things. Every team is strong. It's just committing to what's important and trying to make contributions to the team moving forward."

Coming back to the match, Williamson admitted that his side was put under immense pressure in the first half by the Capitals' batters.

The Sunrisers' bowling attack- barring Bhuvneshwar Kumar- was put to the sword by ex-captain David Warner, Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell.

Warner smashed an unbeaten 58-ball 92 and added 122 runs (in just 66 deliveries) with Rovman Powell (67* off 35 deliveries), while Pant played a brisk little cameo to power DC to 207/3.

Williamson said, "I think they had a fantastic total at the halfway stage. Having said that, as a batting unit you want belief and there was a lot of belief. It's a pretty small ground and there was a little bit of dew. If we kept wickets in hand, then who knows. For us, it's just going back to the ally simple. We were put under pressure a lot in that first half and allowed them to get an above-par total."

Sunrisers have now suffered three back-to-back defeats in a row, and with the race for playoffs heating up, the former champions will look to come back strongly in their next fixture against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (on May 08).
