IPL 2022 | Devon Conway denied DRS as Wankhede faces power-outage

Chennai Super Kings opener Devon Conway proved to be the collateral damage of the power issue at the Wankhede Stadium as he was unable to get the on-field decision reversed.

It all happened in the first over of CSK innings when Mumbai Indians left-arm seamer Daniel Sams angled a length delivery into the Kiwi opener.

Umpire Chirra Ravikanthreddy had no hesitation in raising his finger despite it being clear that the ball was going down leg.

Due to power issues, the Decision Review System (DRS) wasn't available, forcing a dejected Conway to walk back to the pavilion.

Conway was soon followed by Moeen Ali, who got undone by a short delivery from Sams.

The left-handed batter got in an awkward position and proceeded to fend it to short square-leg, where Hrithik Shokeen completed an easy catch.

It kept getting worse for the defending champions as they slipped from 3/2 to 5/3 in the next over, thanks to yet another brilliant over from Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah, who registered figures of 5/10 in his last outing, picked up from where he had left from the previous game. He bowled full and fast and eventually trapped Robin Uthappa plumb in front of the wicket.

Uthappa was thinking of taking the review, but the umpires informed that the technology wasn't available because of the aforementioned reasons.

Nevertheless, it proved to be a blessing in disguise, as Chennai would have lost one of their reviews had Uthappa decided to challenge the on-field call.

Earlier, Mumbai dropped their talismanic all-rounder Kieron Pollard on his birthday and handed a maiden cap to rookie Proteas batsman Tristan Stubbs.

At the time of writing, CSK had lost three more wickets in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, and Shivam Dube, and were tottering at 44 for 6.
