IPL 2021 to resume in UAE, BCCI overlooks India due to 'monsoon season in September-October'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has finally decided to resume the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League in the UAE in its ongoing Special General Meeting (SGM). The BCCI has taken the decision of moving the tournament out of India citing the monsoon season in the months of September and October.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced to complete the remaining matches of VIVO Indian Premier League 2021 season in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) considering the monsoon season in India in the months of September-October this year," BCCI said in its press release.

The venue of the IPL and the issue of hosting the ICC World T20 in India were the important agendas of the BCCI SGM and the board has decided to seek more time from the ICC on organising the global event scheduled towards the end of the year in the country.

"The BCCI SGM further authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021," the release stated further.

Reportedly, the BCCI had also considered moving the IPL 2021 to England and accommodating it after the Test series between India and England. However, the SGM ultimately decided to lock UAE as the final destination of its cash cow that was abruptly postponed due to rising Covid-19 cases in multiple franchises.

The BCCI had estimated a loss of approximately Rs 2,500 crore in case they would fail to resume the remaining portion of the tournament and hence the BCCI was adamant about completing the tournament albeit at a different destination.

The last edition of the IPL too was played in the UAE in the month of September as the BCCI had to postpone the event in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent nationwide lockdown in India.

Rahul Tripathi fined for not wearing face mask & driving around during lockdown

Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Rahul Tripathi has been penalised by the police for allegedly violating Covid-19 lockdown norms as per a report in The Indian Express. Tripathi was reportedly moving around without a mask in Pune’s Kondhwa area. “The cricketer Tripathi was not wearing a face mask and was driving around without any reason during the lockdown. There were some other persons in the car,” said senior inspector Sardar Patil of Kondhwa police station. The right-handed batsman was fined Rs. 500 and was also issued a receipt. Tripathi had scored 187 runs in 7 matches for KKR in the IPL 2021 before the tournament was suspended due to a rise in Covid-19 cases within the franchises. In fact, KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy, Tim Seifert and Sandeep Warrior had also tested positive for the disease. The cash-rich league was put to a halt on May 4 with immediate effect and for an indefinite period but the BCCI is now planning to resume it in September while the final would be played around October 10. The board though has cleared that remainder of the tournament won’t take place in India. Apart from the three KKR players, DC’s Amit Mishra, SRH’s Wriddhiman Saha and CSK’s bowling coach L.Balaji and batting coach Mike Hussey had also tested positive.

Kapil Dev cautions Virat Kohli against becoming 'over-aggressive' against 'tough' England

India’s world-cup winning captain Kapil Dev has cautioned Virat Kohli against over aggression on the upcoming tour of England where India will play six Test matches including the inaugural World Test Championship final. He expressed his high expectations of him but also suggested taking the game session by session. "I expect him to excel. Can you really shackle him? He is a natural when it comes to adapting but I would caution him to not be over-aggressive. He will have to measure it session by session. He'll be better off waiting for his moments of dominance," Kapil told Mid-Day in an interview. Pointing out the keys to success in England, Dev said that Kohli will have to show patience while new to the crease in order to counter seam and swing. He said going hard early on will not see him dominating the proceedings instead he will lose his wicket. "He will get his runs with a bit of patience. Trying too hard and too early doesn’t work in England where you need to watch the movement of the ball. If you play seam and swing well, show patience, you will succeed in England," Kapil added. Kapil also rated England very highly and above the qualities of the Indian bowling attack. He reminded India of England’s ‘toughness’ in their home conditions and urged Indian bowlers to rely on swing to get success against England in the upcoming five-match series. "I want this team to remember that England in England is tough. They are a very good team when playing at home but then, it will also depend on how the Indian bowlers adapt to the conditions and pitches. Swing will be very rewarding and here I feel England are one step ahead of India," Kapil concluded. India will first play the WTC final against New Zealand starting June 18 in Southampton before the Test series against hosts England scheduled for August this year.

India to go retro in World Test Championship final, Ravindra Jadeja shows glimpse

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja showed a glimpse of Team India’s kit for the World Test Championship final on his Twitter timeline. Jadeja is seen wearing a retro-styled sweater that Indian teams used to wear in the 1990s while playing Test cricket. Jadeja along with other team members of the squad for the tour of England are under quarantine in Mumbai before they will board a chartered flight to the United Kingdom. Virat Kohli-led India are set to reach the UK in the first week of June and they are likely to go through another round of hard quarantine in Southampton where they will face off against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand side in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship. Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be one of the certainty for India in the WTC final irrespective of the conditions in Southampton. It will be a comeback for the southpaw as he missed the last Test series against England and the last Test of the series against Australia. Jadeja has turned out to be a prolific batsman for India in the longest format and his effective bowling that allows Kohli to rotate his pacers around in the overseas conditions make him a certain starter in India’s Test playing XI.
