IPL 2021 | RCB vs RR: What Experts said as Bangalore continue winning juggernaut

The talent quotient was never the question with Royal Challengers Bangalore but gelling as a unit was. As of now, they are ticking most of the boxes in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League after sailing past Rajasthan Royals by 10 wickets in the 16th match of the competition. A thoroughly professional all-round show makes RCB still the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

A score of 177 after batting first was never going to be enough. However, with runs on the board, it’s always difficult for the team chasing, if they lose a few wickets early. However, that never happened as the opening duo of captain Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal ensured that the target was chased down without the loss of any wickets.

Padikkal who came into the tournament on the back of some stupendous form in the domestic circuit proved why he is one of the best young players in the country at the moment. While he was a prolific run-scorer for RCB last season, a question mark lingered on his strike rate.

Despite scoring more than 500 runs in the season, Padikkal’s strike rate hovered around the 120-mark which didn’t really help RCB in crucial junctures. However today Padikkal looked in a different mould altogether. The southpaw looked in a dominant mood right from the word go. How often do you see Virat Kohli giving the strike back to his younger partner in a partnership but it was Padikkal’s day and Kohli respected the situation?

He was nowhere close to his fluent best in the first half of the run-chase. However, with Padikkal smashing the RR bowlers all around the Wankhede Stadium, Kohli also decided to rise to the occasion. From nowhere, he started middling everything and completed his first half-century of the season. On other hand, Padikkal was on gear five from the word go. He raced to his maiden IPL century in 51 balls, an innings that included some delightful shots which was indeed a sight to behold. On quite a few occasion, his strokeplay had a shade of Yuvraj Singh in it. In the end, RCB reached the target in the 17th over with all 10 wickets in hand.

Earlier in the day, it was RCB skipper Virat Kohli who won the toss and opted to field. It was a fair call given how things have generally panned out at the Wankhede and his bowlers were there to back him. Mohammed Siraj who has been a revelation in the last few months made Jos Buttler dance to his tune. He was never comfortable against Siraj and was eventually castled by a peach of a delivery.

Kyle Jamieson bagged the wicket of Manan Vohra while Siraj came back in his next over and trapped David Miller right in front. It was a great review from Virat Kohli which saw Miller walking back to the pavilion. With the score reading 17/3, the RR skipper needed to show his skills. He started off with some impressive shots and yet again he was dismissed by Washington Sundar after striking a maximum.

With four wickets down, the Rajasthan Royals looked down and out when Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag resurrected the innings with a brilliant partnership. Dube did what he does best, swinging across the line and collecting some important fours and sixes. Parag was classy during his brief stay but his dismissal came after a terrific helicopter shot.

RR still were nowhere close to where they needed to be and needed someone to give them the much-needed impetus. They found an ally in Rahul Tewatia who breezed his way to 40 of just 23 deliveries and propelled them to a score of 177 in their allotted 20 overs. The effort eventually went in vain as RCB chased the total down with all 10 wickets in hand.

Captain’s Viewpoints

Rajasthan Royals skipper lamented the fact that their batting hasn’t been up to the standard which they are looking at. From a position of relative discomfort, Rajasthan managed to score a competitive 177 on the board.

“Our batsmen did really well to get a score on the board but they did really well to chase without losing a wicket. We need to do some homework and need an honest review about our batting. That's what this sport is all about, we keep on failing and we keep on coming about. It puts you down but you have to keep on fighting,” Samson said.

RCB skipper Virat Kohli lavished praise on Devdutt Padikkal who was quite magnificent. He had a great season with the bat last season as well but Kohli lauded him for the way he paced his innings.

“It was an outstanding innings, he batted really well for his first season last time as well. Bit of a talk about accelerating after 40-50, this was the best way to put it to rest. Great talent, great one to look forward in the future. I had the best seat in the house. I think T20 is all about partnership batting. You can't always be the guy going dominant. When one guy goes, it's important for me to rotate strike, and vice versa. Tonight my role was different and I wanted to hang in there. In the end I picked my spots, the pitch was good,” Kohli said.

Kohli also said that despite Padikkal asking him to finish the match off, he gave him the strike and wanted the 20-year-old to complete his maiden IPL century.

“We spoke about it [the 100], he said finish it off. He said many more to come, I told him you tell me that after you get the first one. I want him to build from here and really help the team. He deserved to get the hundred today, flawless innings,” Kohli said.

RCB doesnt have an out and out champions in the bowling line-ups. Rather they have bowlers who are effective despite not having the reputation.

“We don't have many stand-out names in bowlers, but we have effective bowlers. Guys who can do it day in day out. Four out of four times we've been the stand-out team in the death overs. We actually restricted 30-35 runs,” said the RCB skipper.

He again praised Paddikal for his special knock but asked the fans to not get over-excited as it is a long tournament and they have to keep performing consistently.

“Dev's innings was outstanding, but for me the bowling which was aggressive, optimistic was key. I would just tell the fans not to get overexcited, we are being professional, we understand the momentum can go away from us quickly. One step at a time, not getting overexcited,” Kohli said.

Expert’s Opinion

Commonly known as the voice of cricket, Harsha Bhogle lauded RCB for continuing their winning run and making it four on a trot. Virat Kohli batted his way to form and Bhogle said that Kohli's innings was just icing on the cake. Devdutt Padikkal who scored his maiden IPL century made Bhogle take notice of his class.

Bhogle was delighted with the fact that Mohammed Siraj has carried on the good work and has looked in terrific rhythm in the tournament so far. A joy to see him bowl is what Bhogle said of Siraj. He also deserved some praise for Shivam Dube and Rahul Tewatia who chipped in with crucial knocks for RR which helped them post a challenging score of 177 on the board.

The Cricviz Analyst like always gave us some number games to play with. How many false shots did Devdutt Padikkal play during his exceptional knock? Or has anyone scored more at No 7 than Rahul Tewatia?

Despite having a near-perfect game, analyst Gaurav Kalra felt that RCB might be a bit concerned with the fact that Maxwell’s run-scoring momentum has been halted. Maxwell began the tournament on a high scoring two half-centuries in the first three matches and making a match-winning impact in all the matches.

Ayaz Menon also reserved praise for RCB and their players who played a part in a convincing victory. He also added that it is a huge achievement to chase down 177 with all 10 wickets in hand.

Former Indian skipper and former selector Kris Srikanth showered praises on Devdutt Padikkal who managed to score his maiden IPL century. He also congratulated Virat Kohli for becoming the first player to ammas 6000 IPL runs.

It proved to be a rather lop-sided encounter in the end. While RCB have all their bases covered so far, the Rajasthan Royals need to claw their way back into the tournament. They have been pretty poor so far and they need to start winning to harbour any hopes of going through to the playoffs.

Virat Kohli becomes first player to reach 6000 IPL runs

Indian run-machine which had not been working to its full potential right now, Virat Kohli reached yet another milestone in his already illustrious career as he became the first man in the history of the Indian Premier League to score 6000 runs in the tournament. The milestone was achieved by the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper in the match against Rajasthan Royals. Before the start of the innings, Kohli, 32, needed 51 runs to get to the milestone and he not only got to the 51, by scoring his first fifty this season but also helped his partner, young opener Devdutt Padikkal in his endeavour to a hundred. Widely acclaimed for the ability to bat himself into form, Kohli struggled for the first 20 balls of his innings, scoring just 22 off it. After playing second fiddle to Padikkal till the 12th over, Kohli decided that he had had enough. The RCB captain targetted youngster Chetan Sakariya hitting him for two boundaries in the 12th over. Soon after, Kohli displayed his full range of shots, punishing the likes of Chris Morris and Shreyas Gopal punishing them for marginally missing their lengths in the second innings. At a point in time it looked like Padikkal's potential hundred was in threat with just 20 odd runs remaining and Kohli accelerating at 69 off 43 deliveries. He later moved the ball around in the ground and let Padikkal scored his century - the youngster's first in his IPL career. Kohli, now, the highest run-getter in the tournament is almost 600 runs ahead of the second-ranked Suresh Raina, who has 5448 runs in his kitty.

Natarajan to miss remainder of IPL 2021 with knee injury, set to undergo surgery

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s ace pacer T Natarajan is set to miss the entire extent of the remaining IPL 2021 due to an aggravated knee injury that he had picked up in SRH’s match against Mumbai Indians. The pacer is to be monitored by National Cricket Academy Bangalore’s physio once he is released from the bubble. "We have not got the full report but we have been told that he has developed a strain in the knee. He will have to undergo rehab in the NCA," a BCCI and NCA source close to the development was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz. Earlier David Warner, the skipper of the SRH had raised concerns about the 30-year-old left-arm seamer’s injury saying that if he goes out of the bubble, it would become difficult to accommodate him later on. "He has obviously got a sore knee. Given the circumstance in these bubbles, if he goes and gets a scan, he obviously has to sit out for seven days. He has to get back in quarantine,” Warner had said during the team’s game against Punjab on Wednesday. “We are just monitoring him at the moment. The physios are doing their best to analyse from a face point of view but he obviously has to go out and get a scan at some point," the Australian had added. It would become clear in due course of time whether some replacement is granted for Natarajan or not. In the three games that he played so far, the Tamil Nadu born had failed to replicate the impact he had in the 2020 edition of the league.

IPL 2021 | PBKS vs MI: With backs to the wall, only way ahead for KL Rahul men’s is forward

The Punjab Kings have had a forgettable outing in the Indian Premier League so far, losing their last three games, since their victory in the opening game, a minute one against Rajasthan Royals. With their backs against the wall, Punjab Kings face Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the IPL history, but for the Kings, a team that led to their ultimate comeback in the last season of the cash-rich tournament. It was against a Mumbai Indians side only where the Punjab Kings defeated them in the second super over eliminator. From there on, the Kings went on to win five consecutive matches, eventually losing to Chennai and getting knocked out of the playoffs race. With a Mumbai, that’s struggling with their batting order, it is going to be a matter of holding their own for the Punjab Kings and eking out a victory to get the momentum back. Punjab need to utilise its resources well After the mini-auction, everybody said that this Punjab team had all its flanks covered. With fast bowlers assembled in the form of Riley Meredith and Jhye Richardson and getting Dawid Malan to go all out at the top, it was a team that looked fearsome at the outset. However, the resources of the team have not been managed well. Playing Chris Gayle in the four matches alongside Nicholas Pooran has yielded no results what so ever for the team. Now is the time for Anil Kumble and the management to make a decision and play their horses for courses. The likes of Malan, Meredith and Chris Jordan need to be backed and placed into the playing XI. If Moises Henriques has been backed as an all-round option then he at least needs to be given 2-3 games to prove himself. Ravi Bishnoi is another prospect that hasn’t been utilised well and if he can’t play in Chennai, then may God help Punjab. The fact that Shahrukh has always been left to bat with the tail is another problematic issue. It is with pertaining issues like these that Punjab would enter the arena at Chepauk once again. Will they able to resolve them or will they get entangled in it all over again, will be told by time only. Mumbai's middle-order mayhem The Mumbai Indians have had one of the most feared middle orders in IPL history. Over the last few years, the likes of Kieron Pollard and the Pandya brothers alongside Ishan Kishan or players late down the order have scored runs aplenty. But this season, the story is a bit different. In the four games so far, Hardik hasn’t been able to cross the 20-run margin. In fact, he has scored a combined total of just 35 runs in those four innings at a dismal average of below nine. What has made matters worse is the fact that he has always got out at the wrong time. Pollard, apart from his one knock in which he hit two sixes in the last two balls to get the Mumbai score past 150, hasn’t really achieved much either. He has scored just 49 runs in four innings with an average of about 17. And if Krunal’s tally of 26 runs is anything to go by, then the situation isn’t really bright. Mumbai’s top fast bowler, Trent Boult going on to ask the middle order to put runs on the board is as alarming a sound as it can get. Thus it is going to be the right time for the Blue and Gold to get their middle order in shape before it gets too late to wake up from slumber. Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians; Match Details Match Number-17 Date and Time: April 23, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 02:00 pm GMT Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Broadcast and Live Stream: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch Report Chennai has so far produced wickets that are low scoring, apart from the one high scoring game involving KKR and RCB. thus expecting another low scoring turner with dual bounce would be a no brainer for anybody. The pitches have generally had help for spinners and if pacers are able to manipulate the ball with cross-seam well, the square is conducive enough to reel results. Weather and Toss Chepauk in the last game had so much dew that even local lad Ravichandran Ashwin was surprised by the amount. He reasoned that it was due to heavy grass that so much dew had accumulated. But with clouds passing by the ground, dew is going to be a phenomenon that captains must keep in mind. If dew increases with passing time, captains would most likely ball first after winning the toss. Team News Punjab Kings Going by the looks of it, Punjab Kings would most likely make changes and they should be the positive ones. Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran must make way for Dawid Malan and Riley Meredith. Similarly, either one between Arshdeep and Mohammed Shami should be dropped to get in Ravi Bishnoi. Since both Fabian Allen and Henriques could bat, they can be given an extended run. Strongest XI KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Dawid Malan, Moises Henriques, Deepak Hooda, Shahrukh Khan, Fabian Allen, Ravi Bishnoi, Murugan Ashwin, Riley Meredith, Arshdeep Singh Mumbai Indians Changing the XI might not be the right way to go forward for Mumbai, but dropping de Kock for Chris Lynn might not be a bad idea. Krunal Pandya could be benched to try out someone like Anukul Roy as well. Roy hasn’t got a shot but has performed exceedingly well for Jharkhand with both bat and ball and his fielding credentials are as good as anybody in the Mumbai lineup. Strongest XI Quinton de Kock (wk)/ Chris Lynn, Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya/Anukul Roy, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult Dream XI Predictions / Fantasy XI Suggestions Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Shahrukh Khan, Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, Ravi Bishnoi, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar (vc)
