IPL 2021 | MI vs KKR - What Experts said as Mumbai consolidate supremacy over reckless Knight Riders

The Mumbai Indians fought back admirably from a hopeless position to win the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs.

The win further strengthened Mumbai’s dominance over the Knight Riders in the IPL, winning 10 of the last 11 games, and 22 out of overall 28 matches played between the two sides since the inaugural edition of the league in 2008.

With the win, the Mumbai Indians have opened up their account in terms of a win in the opening edition while for the Knight Riders, the equation has gone even-stevens after this loss having won their opening encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Captains’ views

KKR skipper Eoin Morgan was asked if the loss was hard to digest considering they were cruising at one stage in the chase, and he readily conceded the disappointment. However, the quality of cricket they played albeit in clusters was not lost on Morgan.

“Yeah, it's disappointing. A lot of the time we played good cricket, certainly the first half and a majority of the chase. We made mistakes, hopefully, we can iron them out,” Morgan said in the post-match presentation.

Morgan accepted that his side completely messed up the chasing tactics as they could neither attack nor they could pace their innings well to take the team home past the finishing line. He said that playing an aggressive brand of cricket has worked for KKR in the past, but to win games like the one against the Mumbai Indians, they need to up their quality.

“Mumbai are a very good side. I think the perfect game is to be able to do both (aggressive as well as anchoring ) and we've managed to do neither in the end. It works for us a majority of the time, but we need to be better. The games that have been played here, would suggest that there's a trend. Mumbai have been performing like this for a long time, that would be something we need to assess,” Morgan added.

On the other hand, the victorious captain Rohit Sharma was elated at the fighting spirit his sides show on the night. He commended each and every bowler for ‘putting their hands up’ whenever he needed them to come to the party.

“It was a great fightback considering where the game was while they were batting. Anyone who came to bowl at different stages wanted to put their hands up and do something for the team,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

He said that the KKR were off to a good start but the spin twins of Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar brought Mumbai back in the game. He said that Chahar’s four-wicket haul was the instrumental contribution, while Pandya’s spell in the latter half of the innings was also valuable in turning things around for the side.

“We can take a lot of confidence from this game. There were lots of positives. The way KKR started, they batted brilliantly in the first six overs. But once the powerplay was gone, the way Rahul came and got wickets was crucial. And Krunal at the end was also crucial. I can praise all the bowlers, honestly. Good signs for the team moving forward,” Rohit added.

He was asked by the nature of the pitch at the Chepauk, and he responded by outlining the need for someone to make their start count.

He said that the trends emerging from the Chepauk have been suggesting that new batsmen find it tougher to get going and hence the set basemen need to take it upon themselves to make big scores to lead their sides to good totals.

“Definitely not easy on this pitch, a set batter needs to carry on as long as possible. The trend in Chennai is when the new batsman comes in, it becomes hard to go from ball one, unlike Wankhede,” Rohit opined.

He also conceded that Mumbai wasted another opportunity to put up a big score on board after missing out against the Royal Challengers Bangalore as well. However, he credited the team for the fightback more than he wanted to lament the missed opportunities.

“To be honest, we were 15-20 runs short. The way we started, we should have batted better. That's happened twice, we need to see how to get better. But I don't want to take credit away from the team,” Rohit asserted.

He commended the number three batsman Suryakumar Yadav for not wasting his good form and making it look like an easier pitch with extraordinary displays of shots.

“I think SKY is carrying that form that he had when he played for India. He's very fearless when he bats. When he plays those shots it doesn't look like he's taking risks, those are cricketing shots. We need a guy who bats fearlessly. I'm glad that we could get some partnerships in the middle and get a decent total. We need to just figure out how to finish innings in the last 5 overs. We've done that in the past,” Rohit concluded.

Experts’ take

Knight Riders had the game firmly in their grasp, but reckless strokes when the required run rate was not going higher put the pressure on batsmen lower down the order.

Analysing the game for the host broadcaster Star Sports, batting legend Brian Lara lambasted Knight Riders batsmen for not having a balanced attitude. However, he said that the Mumbai Indians won the game instead of the Knight Riders losing their cause.

Lara was not the only one to have that sentiment as cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, too, was puzzled by the batting efforts of Knight Riders while at the same time commended the Mumbai Indians for their brilliant defence.

Veteran journalist Sambit Bal could not fathom the fact the Knight Riders went on to lose the game needing to run a ball from the last five overs.

He blamed set batsmen for throwing their wickets away and allowing the Mumbai Indians to get back in the game, which they did in fine style on the back of exceptional bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.

He also reminded the world about the absolute dominance of the Mumbai Indians over the Knight Riders in the 14-year-long and developing history of the IPL.

Former Indian opener and now an ace analyst across platforms, Aakash Chopra saw all the qualities on display from the Mumbai Indians that have helped them win the title on most occasions. However, he said the Knight Riders have always found a way to be overhauled by the Mumbai Indians and the encounter on Tuesday night was just another incidence of that.

Amid the huge rounds of applause for the Mumbai Indians, experts did not miss out on noticing the glaring dropped catches from the Mumbai Indians.

Chopra was at it with pointing out that Andre Russell was dropped on as many as two occasions and the Mumbai Indians were good enough to clinch the contest.

Harsha Bhogle, too, pointed out the bizarre phase of the play when the Mumbai Indians were dropping a lot of catches while the Knight Riders were eager to gift their wickets away.

Earlier in the last few overs of the Mumbai Indians batting, experts were in awe of Andre Russell who picked up the first-ever five-wicket haul against the Mumbai Indians.

Chopra pointed out the big collapse from the Mumbai side where they lost seven wickets for just 38 runs in the last five overs and brilliant innings from Suryakumar Yadav seemed like played on a different pitch in a different contest.

Harsha Bhogle also commended the tactics of Eoin Morgan and a clinical spell of bowling from Shakib Al Hasan.

Bhogle also spoke highly of a 99-metre-long six off the bat of Suryakumar Yadav off Pat Cummins that took him past his fifty-run mark.

The Mumbai Indians are well and truly back in the 14th edition of the IPL after facing an embarrassing loss at the hands of the RCB in their last game.

On the other hand, though, the Knight Riders will be hurting while digesting the fact that they let the game slip away with only 31 needed off the last 30 balls and six wickets remaining in the dugout.

Broken finger knocks Ben Stokes out of IPL 2021

Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League due to a broken finger, Rajasthan Royals have confirmed. The injury occurred in the Royals’ last game yesterday when Ben Stokes attempted to catch off the bat of Chris Gayle. The Royals are already without the services of Jofra Archer and the injury to Ben Stokes will come as a killer blow to their chance in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. RR do have the option to back David Miller or Liam Livingstone as a batting cover, but the all-around dimensions that Stokes brings will be missed dearly by the franchise if he gets ruled out for the season. Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled of the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League due to a broken hand, Independent reported. The injury occurred in the Royals’ last game yesterday when Ben Stokes attempted ot catch off the bat of Chris Gayle. Stokes did not bowl more than one over which he has already bowled before getting injured. The star all-rounder will be staying in India and will undergo an X-ray on April 15 to determine the extent of the injury, Independent added. The report further added that the ECB and the Rajasthan Royals franchise have started discussions on the injury management of Stokes, who has been England’s irreplaceable player over the last couple of years. The Royals are already without the services of Jofra Archer and the injury to Ben Stokes will come as a killer blow to their chance in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. The injury will also be a point of concern for the Eoin Morgan led England who were looking like they had a good shot at the T20 World Cup scheduled to be hosted in India between October and November this year. Stokes’ injury and a possible long path of his recovery will reignite the debate around England’s star players availability in the IPL and the subsequent impact on their career for England in international cricket. Stokes had missed the first half of the last edition of the league held in the UAE due to personal reasons. He was instrumental in Royal’s pursuit of a playoff spot, but the team could not make it to the top four of the IPL 2020. In the absence of both Archer and Stokes, the Royals will bank upon the likes of Chris Morris and Mustafizur Rahman to turn things around after suffering a narrow loss in the first game of the season. With Chetan Sakariya doing well in the last game, RR might also try to get a specialist middle-order batsman and push Jos Buttler up. They could look at someone like Devon Conway of New Zealand given he has been in top form throughout the season.

IPL 2021 | SRH vs RCB: Hurting Sunrisers seek turnaround against patchy Royal Challengers

When Virat Kohli and David Warner walk down towards the pitch at Chepauk for the second game of the season, neither of them would be a leader who knows their best XI in this tournament although Kohli has tasted an early success while Warner saw his bowlers losing all control helplessly. Virat Kohli’s RCB did everything that it does in the IPL, from setting up games with pieces of individual brilliance, then messing it all up through collective failures, before an individual taking it all upon himself to steer the team out of trouble. First, Harshal Patel emerged as an unlikely hero and clogged back Mumbai’s momentum to restrict them on an underwhelming score. Then, batsmen messed all of the efforts although Glenn Maxwell shrugged off all his IPL rust in a span of a few balls. But, AB de Villiers had too much class and pedigree in him to let the game slip away from the RCB. On the other hand, Warner was helpless to see his bowlers, who were rated the main arsenals of the team being taken to the cleaners by the Knight Riders. While chasing, he got an absolute jaffa with pace and bounce on a pitch that was good only when bowlers were using cutters, followed by frustratingly unassertive innings from Manish Pandey and crumbling middle order. Rashid Khan vs the trio of Kohli, Maxwell, de Villiers Virat Kohli has come into the IPL on the back of a frustrating struggle against the leg-spinner Adil Rashid from England, and Warner will bank on his trump card to continue RCB’s captain misery against the wrist spin. Kohli will open the batting and Rashid has been bowling in the phase of the game after the powerplay, hence the highly-anticipated duel could well be averted. However, there is an inevitability about Rashid Khan bowling against RCB’s ‘royal challengers’— Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers. Maxwell batted at the number four position in the last game followed by de Villiers at number five, and invariably Rashid Khan will be assigned the task of booth containment and elimination of the dangerous duo. Whichever way the contest between Rashid Khan and the magnificent trio will go, it will shape the story and the outcome of the clash between the Sunrisers and the Royal Challengers. Devdutt Padikkal— Can he retain his magic? Devdutt Padikkal had emerged as one of the finds of the tournament last year. He did not go into oblivion following the highs of the IPL 2020 and instead piled on runs in the domestic circuit. He was at the top of his game and was second only to Prithvi Shaw in the Vijay Hazare Trophy held earlier this year and the RCB were hoping for him to build on his experience from the last season and the domestic tournaments. However, the novel Coronavirus infection hurt his preparations and he was ruled out of the last game. Asking Washington Sundar to open in his place, RCB have shown they are not looking to go away from Padikkal, and he should walk back into the XI to partner Kohli at the top of the order. Padikkal would be itching to get out on the field with the bat in hand and prove his mental strength along with his mettle with the bat. There have been many one-season wonders in the history of the league, and Padikkal would be more than eager not to be one of them. New ball riddle for the Sunrisers The bowling department was deemed to be the Sunrisers dominating suit coming into the tournament, but they were jolted in the first game itself. They have the luxury of possessing two of the best bowlers in the powerplays of the league — Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Sandeep Sharma. Sandeep has taken 53 wickets in the powerplay which is the highest number of scaps in field restriction for any bowler in the history of the IPL while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has scalped 48 wickets in the first six overs. However, on the night against the Knight Riders, none of those two men came to rescue David Warner and the runs kept coming from both ends except the phase when Rashid Khan was bowling. Warner needs both of them to come back to their best if they have to stop the juggernaut that is the RCB batting department with the firepower of Maxwell, and de Villiers and the class of Deddutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar. Middle-order muddle for Warner, Bayliss The Sunrisers have taken a cue from the England T20I team that has reaped the full potential of Jonny Bairstow—the number four batsman. The Yorkshireman too capitalised on the opportunity with a brutal half-century that kept the Sunrisers in the hunt of the big chase. However, the choice of Bairstow’s batting position and his success has opened the big question surrounding the relevance of Kane Williamson who could not find a place in the last game. Sunrisers coach Trevor Bayliss clarified that the right-hander is not out of the context and will be in the picture going forward. Another piece of complication, the Byaliss-Warner duo has to find solutions to is the batting position of Vijay Shakar and Abdul Samad. Shankar had a forgettable outing last time while Samad was at with full of promise in his short stay at the crease. Bayliss dismissed the talks about Shakar batting above Samad as one of the luxuries of hindsight, but he too would be knowing the enterprising value of Abdul Samad batting higher at number five position. Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bangalore: Match Details Match Number-06 Date and Time: April 14, 07:30 pm IST, 02: 00 PM GMT Venue: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Broadcast and Live Stream; Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch and Weather The pitches in the two matches played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium have been slower and have supported bowlers who rely on cutters to produce good results. The pitches have also aided spinners albeit at a very slow pace. The run-scoring has not been easy at the Chepauk, and the RCB batsmen will be wary of what could well have been a magnificent chance going away from them if not for the brilliance of AB de Villiers in the last game. The Sunrisers too have played a game at this ground and they will do well to recall Eoin Morgan held back Pat Cummins for a long period and tasked the spinners to produce early wickets when they will be trying ot judge the nature of the surface to draw out their tactics to come back after a sluggish start. The weather condition in Chennai is expected to be a bit cooler than usual but that will comes at the expense of good weather of the game. As per Accuweather, there is a 40 per cent chance of precipitation in the city on the night of April 14 and the game could well be affected. Team News Sunrisers Hyderabad There are no fitness concerns in the Sunrisers camp although the management would be mulling few changes in the team combination. Mohammad Nabi picked up two wickets in the later phase of the game but looked docile in the early part of his spell. He could not provide a blitz with the bat either and his place in the playing Xi would be on thin ice with an ever so reliable Jason Holder setting on the benches. The management can also consider bringing the all-rounder Abhishek Sharma in the playing XI. But it would be too early to exclude Vijay Shakar who seems to be the only like for like replacement if the left-hander has to come into the Playing XI. Strongest XI David Warner (c), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Manish Pandey, Jonny Bairstow, Vijay Shankar, Abdul Samad, Mohammad Nabi/Jason Holder, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Sandeep Sharma Royal Challengers Bangalore Devdutt Padikkal seems most likely to come back at the top of the order cutting short the experiment of opening with Washington Sundar. He is certain to play as a bowling all-rounder though and will partner Yuzvendra Chahal to bolster the spin attack. Padikkal’s return is likely to be at the expense of Shahbaz Ahmed whose participation was limited to an over and two-ball long innings in the game against the Mumbai Indians. Virat Kohli would also be itching to bring Daniel Samas in place of Daniel Christian whom he did not rely on with the ball in hand. However, Christian has secured insane number batting in the lower-order and playing the role of finisher. Can Virat Kohli see the all-around abilities of Sams over Christian just one game into the tournament? Seems unlikely. Strongest XI Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (c), Rajat Patidar, AB de Villiers (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Christian, Washington Sundar, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal SRH vs RCB: Dream XI/Fantasy XI David Warner, Devdutt Padikkal, Abdul Samad, Glenn Maxwell, Jason Holder, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj Captain: AB de Villiers Vice-captain: Jonny Bairstow
