IPL 2021 | DC vs SRH: With nothing much to lose, Sunrisers eye positive restart

Struggle. The one word that defined the first half of the Indian Premier League as well as the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The BCCI had just about managed to get the cash-rich league back in India after the last year’s edition was held in UAE only to see it getting suspended as the country was severely hit with the second wave of Covid-19.

Well, the BCCI has anchored the tournament back on track with some tweaks in the scheduling and the venues.

The Hyderabad franchise also needs some major changes if the side wants to get back on track in the second half of the edition. SRH management took a huge step during the first leg of the IPL after they handed over the captaincy baton to Kane Williamson removing David Warner from the post.

"The decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years.”

"As we face the remainder of the season, we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field,” the statement added.

The decision was a surprising one for many as SRH have lifted only one title in the IPL and achieved the feat under the captaincy of Warner. But as they say, this game doesn’t really work on the past records but it’s all about the present form and the David Warner-led side had been genuinely struggling. They had already lost four out of the five matches that they had played then.

But handing the leadership to Williamson didn’t really bring much positivity as the side lost the next two matches as well. But that has been the talk of the past and the only way that SRH can give themselves that small chance of making a comeback is by looking forward and what lies ahead.

Delhi Capitals on the other hand have tasted some success in the recent past in the IPL. They ended as the runners-up for the first time last year while have been in some good touch in this season as well. In the eight matches in which DC featured, they clinched wins in six of them under the captaincy of wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant who was appointed for the position after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out from the first phase due to a shoulder injury that he had sustained during England series at home.

Iyer though is fit and will take the field for the Capitals but the side would be led by Pant only. Surprisingly, it was under Iyer's captaincy that Delhi had reached the finals but nevertheless, the right-hander’s presence in the batting unit will provide them with a lot of strength and stability, especially on these tracks.

SRH’s middle-order woes

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have consistently faced troubles with their middle-order batting despite getting decent starts on some occasions. In the last clash against Delhi Capitals, Kane Williamson had held the fort from one end but kept losing partners on the other side as the match went into the Super Over and the Sunrisers eventually lost the game.

The Hyderabad side has a new recruit in Sherfane Rutherford who has replaced Jonny Bairstow in the line up. He was in decent touch during the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League scoring 263 runs and the SRH team management would be expecting him to continue doing the same for them as well.

The youngsters need to step up and take ownership if Sunrisers are seeking any positive results in the second half. They do have the firepower to take on the opposition but haven’t been able to produce a performance of their class and calibre.

Rashid Khan - The Key

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan can prove to be the trump card for SRH in UAE. The kind of variations that he has in his bowling especially deceiving the batsmen with wrong-uns is a major aspect of his bowling. Keeping the line on or just outside off stump can help him in pushing the batsmen on the back foot.
He will be crucial given the left handed heavy batting line-up of the Delhi Capitals.

Importance of medium pacers

The last match in Dubai was evidence of the kind of conditions that the venue has on offer. The medium-pacers will play a vital role in putting a halt on the scoring rate. Sunrisers Hyderabad would be banking on someone like Bhuvneshwar Kumar to capitalise on the conditions and give them some positive start.

Problem of plenty for DC

Delhi Capitals are in a good space and would be looking to continue from where they left the competition in the first phase. DC openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw are in the top four in the list of leading run-scorers while Avesh Khan is the second highest wicket-taker at the moment in the tournament.

The right-arm pacer had suffered a thumb injury while he was with the Indian team in England and had to return back. But he later joined the Delhi Capitals squad in UAE.

Let’s first talk about their batting strength.

Dhawan and Shaw had been in brilliant form in the first half of the IPL 2021 while they have the likes of Pant, Shimron Hetmyer, Steve Smith, Ajinkya Rahane and now Shreyas Iyer in the ranks. Pant and the team management will have their task cut out to make a steady and stable batting order.

With only four overseas players allowed in the final XI and Iyer back in the team, it would be a difficult choice to make between Hetmyer and Smith if the team management picks Stoinis as well.

The bowling attack seems to be sorted for now as they have Axar Patel and R Ashwin who can also bat while Kagiso Rabada, Avesh and Amit Mishra are the other bowlers who might feature in the final XI.

Match Details

Match: DC vs SRH, 33rd Match, Indian Premier League 2021

Date: Wednesday, September 22, 2021

Time: 7:30 PM

Venue: Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai

Pitch Report

The track in Dubai might have something on offer for the pacers in the first half of the encounter. At the time of writing, Punjab pacers in their match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, 21 September, have picked up 9 out of the 10 available wickets.

With a little grass on offer to bind the wicket, this also is a good pitch to slog across the line, but one must always be wary of the bigger boundary. The key for the batsmen is to get their eye in and then accelerate. So, if you win the toss, bowl first.

Team News

DC: Chris Woakes had earlier pulled out of the remainder of the IPL 2021 citing personal reasons and Ben Dwarshuis was roped in as his replacement.

"JSW-GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals today announced that English all-rounder Chris Woakes, who picked up 5 wickets in 3 matches in the first half of the IPL 2021, has pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons," Delhi Capitals said in a statement.

"The Delhi Capitals have announced Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis as Woakes' replacement for the remainder of the IPL 2021 season," it added.

Apart from this Iyer is also back in the side after missing out the first leg. Though Iyer is back but the team would be led by Rishabh Pant.

The wicket-keeper batsman was earlier given the captaincy after Iyer was ruled out with a shoulder injury during the England series at home.

SRH: The biggest news that came out of the SRH camp on Wednesday was that their strike bowler T Natarajan has tested positive for COVID-19. The IPL press release stated that Natarajan along with all-rounder Vijay Shankar and 5 others have been put under isolation. This means that SRH will once again go into a game with an undercooked squad and hope that things pan out for them.
While this misery is much fresh, before the start of the tournament, opener, Jonny Bairstow had also pulled out of the remaining fixtures of the IPL 2021 due to the six-day quarantine rule.

“They won't be boarding the flight to UAE. One of the reasons for their pull out is the six-day quarantine which they didn't need to do earlier," PTI quoted a BCCI official.

Bairstow was then replaced by Sherfane Rutherford in the squad which ideally should give SRH better balance in the middle order.

Sanju Samson pins hope on Chris Morris as Rajasthan prepare for Punjab challenge

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has pinned his hopes on the franchise’s most expensive player Chris Morris who was bought for an eye shattering deal of Rs. 16.25 crore. With Rajasthan ailing from pullouts their core international stars, the team finds themselves at a tight spot with just six points from seven matches. In the pre-match virtual press conference, Samson stated that he has full faith in the ‘biggest match-winner’ Chris Morris and that the franchise have no pressure despite missing the likes of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. “I would like to say that I have the biggest match-winner sitting alongside me. So, I don’t have any worries. There is no pressure. We all love and enjoy playing with Chris. With Chris in our side, I feel that happy days are ahead of us,” Samson said with Morris alongside him in the press conference. Morris, who had a great outing back in 2020 with the Royal Challengers Bangalore was picked up by Rajasthan as his stocks rose in world cricket for his leadership skills and personality. While his recruitment has not exactly turned Royals’ ship around, but the all-rounder himself has had a decent outing with 14 wickets from 7 matches. Speaking about his role in the Rajasthan squad, Morris explained that it is his job to keep the guys calm and relay the important information to his captain Samson. “My role as an experienced player is to keep the guys calm. I will stand at mid-on or mid-off and have a chat with the other bowlers. If I pick something up, I will relay the message to Sanju. I have been doing this role for the whole of my career. Irrespective of whether the other experienced guys are there or not in the team, I do it. I will definitely help Sanju,” Morris spoke about his duties. Rajasthan have a steep road ahead of them if they want to qualify for the playoffs and will be looking beyond Morris in this second leg of the Indian Premier League. They will hope for their captain to come good along with new recruits like Liam Livingstone and Tabraiz Shamsi, who have both set world cricket on fire in the last year. Rajasthan play their first match on Tuesday, 21 September against Punjab Kings in the Dubai International Stadium.

Taliban ban telecast of IPL 2021 matches in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has faced struggle on every front since it has been taken over by Taliban and the organisation has now come up with a new norm. Taliban have banned the broadcasting of Indian Premier League (IPL) in Afghanistan. Moreover, it has also issued a warning that the Afghan media channel should not broadcast the league. "Ridiculous: Taliban have banned the broadcasting of Indian Premier League (IPL) in Afghanistan. Taliban have warned that Afghan media outlets should not broadcast the Indian Cricket League due to girls dancing and the presence of the female audience and spectators in stadiums," Afghanistan journalist, Fawad Aman, said in a tweet. Taliban had earlier said that the women in Afghanistan won’t be allowed to play any sport including cricket. This had put the men’s one-off Test between Afghanistan and Australia under dark clouds after CA had sent a stern message that it wouldn’t hold the fixture if women cricketers are not allowed to play the sport. “I don’t think women will be allowed to play cricket because it is not necessary that women should play cricket,” the deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq said while talking to Australian broadcaster SBS. “In cricket, they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this,” he added. The second leg of the IPL 2021 is being held in UAE. The tournament was earlier suspended on May 4 after there was a rise in Covid-19 cases within the franchises. The tournament was resumed on September 19, 2021 and the final will be played on October 15, 2021, a couple of days ahead of the World T20 which will be co-hosted by UAE and Oman.

Mithali Raj laments lack of batting partnership, admits 'lot of work' to do in bowling

India Women were defeated in all departments of the game in the first game of the series against the Australian Women and the skipper Mithali Raj admitted that her side have to do a “lot of work”, especially in the bowling department. She conceded that their bowling attack is built around spinners, who have not found any rhythm and are not executing the plans on the field. “Well, see, you don’t have plans, but again it is about executing it in the ground, sometimes the bowlers don’t get the rhythm, but there are times when you know they get the rhythm but the plan isn’t working. Yes, we have a lot to work in terms of our bowling department because, predominantly, we are spin attack and spinners are getting hit everywhere, so that is something we need to tweak in,” Mithali said at the post-match press conference. India Women could manage only 225 runs in their quota of 50 overs while the batsmen failed to find any momentum in the innings. In contrast to their batting, the Australian Women plummeted the Indian bowlers to all parts of the grounds and won the game comprehensively in the 41st over. Raj addressed the batting failure as well and said that India Women were looking at setting a target in excess of 250 runs but the big wickets of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana didn’t help their cause. She emphasized that the lack of partnership in the lower middle order also derailed their batting momentum which could have lifted them to a defendable total. “See, when you know the (kind of) batting line up the Australians have, anything closer to 250, is what we were looking at, but losing two wickets, especially batters like Shafali (Verma) and Smriti (Mandhana) in the power-play itself. So, it was important that the middle-order starts to compensate for that and build a partnership, that is what we did with Yastika (Bhatia), but again we didn’t get enough partnerships in the lower-middle as well,” Mithali added. India Women have been scrutinised for their conservative approach while batting and watches of the game have said that they don’t play “fearless cricket” to put pressure on the opposition. Mithali disagreed with that idea and said that the girls should be focussing on building partnerships instead of chasing the “fearless” brand of the game, which she said would eventually come after they gain confidence at this level. “We need to now have partnerships, rather than thinking about playing fearless cricket, the girls need to get down to developing some partnerships in the middle and that definitely will give them confidence at some point to play fearless,” she argued. India Women are on the tour of Australia for a full-fledged series comprising of three-match long ODI series, a one-off Test match and a three-match long T20I series. The next game of the ODI series will be played on September 24 in Mackay.

AUS-W vs IND-W | 1st ODI: Courtesy all-round show, Australia clinch thumping win against India

Australia women’s team was off to a flying start in the three-match ODI series against India after winning the first clash comprehensively by 9 wickets in Mackay. Chasing 226 in 50 overs, the Australian team went over the line in 41 overs after Rachael Haynes top-scored with an unbeaten 93 while Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning also struck individual fifties. Haynes and Healy gave the home side a perfect start after stitching a partnership of 126 runs for the first wicket. Healy was eventually out for a run-a-ball 77 after getting caught by Pooja Vastrakar off Poonam Yadav. Captain Lanning who joined Haynes in the middle at number three scored 53* off 69 and put up a partnership of 101 runs for the second wicket and took Australia home. Earlier, in the day, India who were put into bat lost a couple of early wickets before Yastika Bhatia and skipper Mithali Raj joined hands to provide the much needed resistance. The two batters put up a partnership of 77 runs before Bhatia departed for 35 off 51 at the start of the 27th over. The visiting team then began to lose wickets at regular succession and were reduced to 178/7 including the dismissal of Mithali who was eventually out for a 107-ball 63 after getting stumped out by Healy off Molineux. Wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh and Jhulan Goswami then chipped in with some runs and took the total to 225/8 in 50 overs. Ghosh scored 32* of 29. For Australia, it was Darcie Brown who scalped a four-wicket haul while Molineux and Darlington picked up a couple of wickets apiece. India captain Mithali Raj expressed disappointment on the bowling performance and admitted that the bowling unit, especially the spinners need to perform on these kinds of wickets. “I think when you are put in to bat first, you need to put a good partnership. A lot more is expected of the bowling department, especially the spinners. They need to perform on these wickets,” she said. Australia skipper Lanning lauded Brown for her bowling performance. “Been a long time since we played cricket, so we were pretty excited. Brown was excellent. It was certainly some good stuff,” she said. The two sides will now meet on Friday for the second ODI at the same venue.
