IPL 2020 | DC vs MI: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream11 Fantasy Picks

The Delhi Capitals will be men on a mission when they meet the Mumbai Indians in their next encounter in order to cement their playoffs berth. The last time the sides met was midway through the Indian Premier League this season when marching into the playoff round was a mere formality for both the sides. However, when Shreyas Iyer will walk on to field for the round two of the clashes between the sides, he will have tough questions hovering in his head and while he has shown impressive qualities of being an able leader and not letting his teammates feel the heat of the competition, he can't recuse himself from the feeling the pressure of facing two games of as much value as of knockout games against the two best sides of the league so far.

The Capitals were showing signs of weakness and vulnerability with too many batsmen failing to make good use of the starts they had got in the initial phase of the tournament but the return of Shikhar Dhawan to his belligerence best at the top of the order and few cameos by the likes of captain Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer had overshadowed the cracks in the batting line-up. The presence of a bowling line-up that turned out to be one of the best in the tournament also helped Iyer to negate the shortcoming in the batting department.

But, in the last three games, the bowling department too, had off days and that left the batting line-up and all its frailties wide open for the teams to exploit. After a long streak of poor scores, Shaw was dropped for the stability that Ajinkya Rahane had to offer but the promises have not been transformed into runs for the team and the Capitals have been left to do a lot of hard work in the middle phase after stuttery innings that Rahahne have played in his five outings. To be fair to the Capitals, their plans were marred by injury setbacks to key players such as Rishabh Pant, having said that, Pant has not looked his best after his comeback from the injury and it plagues the Delhi’s batting line up.

Captain Shreyas Iyer has not looked terrible with the bat and has amassed 389 runs from 12 outings in the season but he has not looked that dominating either that is the signature of his batting and has not quite won the Capitals a lot of games this season. Iyer and Pant have been the driving force of the Delhi Capitals’ engine in the past few seasons and they will need all the elements to work in a perfect manner as they plan to up the ante against the best in the league this year.

On the other hand, even the Virat Kohli’s team combined with a lengthy spell of sledging could not prevent the juggernaut of Mumbai Indians in the last game. The team looks daunting in all departments and has been a revelation in the season with every batsman showing impeccable resistance to defensive batting or bowling. Irrespective of conditions and situations of the game, someone or the other stands up tall to win them the games with towering performances.

In the last game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Suryakumar Yadav stood his ground against the quality bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal and Chris Morris with an aggressive ploy of Virat Kohli to rattle him. In matches before the last game, the likes of Pandya brothers, Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan have sucked the life out of the opposition bowling line up. Whatever was left by the batsmen, were drained down by the ferocious spells of bowling by the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and James Pattinson. The spinners in Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya have played the role of silent killers magnificently and have not allowed teams to take a breather after facing the pace trio with the new ball.

The Mumbai Indians have played this season like a side worthy of the title of 4-time champions and although the side is without the regular captain Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard had made sure that the side remains focussed with the ultimate goal of stamping their supremacy in the IPL history.

Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians: Match details

Match Number- 51

Date: 31st October 2020, at 3:30 PM IST, 02:00 PM Local, 10.00 AM IST

Venue: Dubai

Broadcast: Star Sports and Hotstar

Pitch and weather

A new pitch will be used for this game and that should offer a balanced contest between bat and ball at least with the new ball. Both the sides are full of natural strikers of the ball and a new pitch will assist their stroke-making as the ball will come nicely onto their bats. However, the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje from the Capitals side and Trent boult, Pattinson and Bumrah will look forward to making the new ball talk and either side which will begin on a high against the new ball will start the game with a slight upper hand.

This will be an afternoon game and hence it should be no brainer to bat first after winning the toss. Yes, the side opting to bat first may bring impressive new-ball bowlers on either side into play but there will be plenty of run on offer against the new ball and both the sides will be tempted to feast on it.

Team News

Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals don’t have any especially grave concerns to ponder about at this moment in terms of the team selection but the team management will expect better returns from Ajinkya Rahane and will bank on experience to come good for the team as they walk into the territory of must-win games.

Kagiso Rabada had a horrible run of form in the last game and was taken to the cleaners by David Warner in the powerplay and the team could never come back from the initial assault. The young pacer would like to put that game out of his mind and focus to team up with Anrich Nortje to run riots like they were doing at the start and the middle of the IPL 2020.

The team management has already stated that Prithvi Shaw was provided ample opportunities before the team had to drop him and it’s unlikely he will be trusted given his recent track record of throwing his wicket away in crucial games like these.

Expected XI

The Capitals are unlikely to change their playing XI however the alarm bells must have rung for Shimron Hetmyer after the last loss against the Sunrisers.

Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Rishabh Pant (wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tushar Deshpande

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are running like a full-fledged bank which has all its departments such as loans, deposits and recovery working at the full potential while the manager has the job of nothing more than but overseeing the situations that may become precarious and taking preemptive measures to avoid such situations.

Ishan Kishan has blossomed at the top and the swagger and flair he has displayed at the top of the order can make the likes of Virender Sehwag very proud while the bat swing will impress none other than Yuvraj Singh. He, as all the good players do, has grabbed the opportunity by the scruff of the neck and now the team should look to just cement its spot in the top two positions of the points table.

The uncertainty around the nature and the status of Rohit Sharma’s injury remains and the star batsman is likely to sit out for the game against the Capitals as well.

Expected XI

The Mumbai Indians have no reason whatsoever to change the playing XI that won them the game against a challenging RCB in the last encounter.

Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard (c), Krunal Pandya, James Pattinson, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

Suryakumar showed Virat Kohli he isn't inferior to anyone - Virender Sehwag

For in-form batsman Surya Kumar Yadav, the sky is the limit. The 30-year-old took the onus on himself to help Mumbai Indians pick two vital points and qualify for the play-offs. Surya hit a gutsy unbeaten 79* as Mumbai beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi. A particular incident from the match became a talking point on the internet. In the 13th over of the chase, skipper Virat Kohli was seen walking up to Surya and saying something while shining the ball. The right-hand batsman displayed tremendous composure and maturity as he walked away from Kohli, avoiding an altercation. Earlier, Suryakumar found himself at the receiving end yet again as he missed out on a national call-up in spite of the consistent show over the past few years. India’s squad for the tour to Australia was announced the previous day and the Mumbai batter didn’t find a mention. Former India opener Virender Sehwag heaped praises on Suryakumar and reacted to the incident involving the batter and Kohli. Sehwag said that Suryakumar isn’t inferior to anyone and showed it on the given night as he breathed fire with fire and answered with the bat. “It was a phenomenal match. The innings played by Suryakumar Yadav was incredible. He showed Virat Kohli that he isn’t inferior to anyone (in reference to the selection snub for the Australia tour). There was a moment where Suryakumar played a shot towards Kohli and then two had a stare-off where the former asserted once again that he doesn’t fear anything or anyone,” Sehwag opined. The 42-year-old also stated that this isn’t the first time when a prolific scorer has missed out on a national berth. However, he is hopeful that Suryakumar will get a call sooner than later. Mumbai Indians are the first team to qualify for the knockouts. The defending champions are set to seal a top-two spot in the IPL points table.

IPL 2020 | CSKS vs KKR: Hits and Flops as Ravindra Jadeja wins a thriller

A total of 35 runs were required from the last two overs with two new batsmen at the crease against a certain Lockie Ferguson, someone who is dreaded for his deadly yorkers in the death. In such a situation, the bowlers will be favoured any day. Lockie too did well for the first three deliveries giving only three runs in them. But post that, it was all a Ravindra Jadeja show in Dubai. With this win, Chennai not only satiated their hunger bowing out of the tournament with pride but also gave their fans a chance to celebrate as the franchise are still directly affecting the Playoffs and the Kolkata based team are the latest victim of that. Apart from Jadeja, youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad and experienced campaigner Ambati Rayudu too contributed to the Chennai victory immensely. On that note, let’s have a look at the Hits and Flops from the game. Hits Ravindra Jadeja Jadeja came to the crease when CSK were deep in troubled waters with its set batsman, Ruturaj Gaikwad having departed from the crease at the wrong moment. With 30 needed from the last two overs, it came down to Lockie Ferguson vs Jadeja. He not only held his nerves to deposit Ferguson across the boundary thrice in that over and take away a total of 20 runs but also took the pressure from an off colour, Sam Curran, as well. Then it all came down to the last over and Kamlesh Nagarkoti bowled brilliant four deliveries to concede only four runs and 7 were required off two. It was Ravindra Jadeja once again who took the charge and hit two consecutive sixes off the young bowler to win it for his team. While bowling, Jadeja had also picked up a wicket and was quite economical as well with figures of 1/20 in three overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad Gaikwad carried on from where he had left in the last game, anchoring the innings while others played the role of the aggressor. Once settled, he took his chances and tried to accelerate the innings. He was successful in doing so, as after a slow 50 run partnership with Watson, he had a 37-ball 68 run partnership with Ambati Rayudu. Even after the fall of Rayudu’s wicket, he kept on trying to score fast and in the process got out trying to play a premeditated scoop off Pat Cummins. His 48 ball 73 showed once again why deserved to open right from the start and not letting him open the innings in the initial phases of the IPL would be considered one of CSK’s worst mistakes from the seasons. Ambati Rayudu Rayudu joined Gaikwad in the middle when the team needed the run rate to move upwards as quickly as possible. He, paying heed to the demand started going bonkers from the word go and succeeded in achieving what he sought to when he came to the crease. The Andhra batsman hit 38 of just 20 deliveries at a strike rate of more than 190. But one shot too many also saw him back, although not before semblance was established in the CSK chase by him. Flops Lockie Ferguson Banked to be the go-to man of the captain in the death, Ferguson disappointed today as he was taken for the cleaners by Ravindra Jadeja and conceded 20 runs off the penultimate over. It wasn’t his day at all, as there was not a single over in which the Kiwi looked like taking the wicket. And the fact that he finished with the figures of 0/54 in his quota of four overs, tells it all. Eoin Morgan Morgan was probably the biggest flop of the game. He deserves the tag not only because of his batting but because of the decisions that he took in the entire game. Be it the promotion of Rinku Singh ahead of him and Karthik in the batting order or bowling Nitish Rana at a juncture when the pressure had been built on the CSK batsmen. Even his untimely interruption in the rhythm of Ferguson was something that a viewer couldn’t understand. When Ferguson had bowled three flawless yorkers and was in his zone, what was the need for Morgan to disturb his rhythm and suggest changes? Plus his batting in which he scored 15 off 12 when the team needed him to score quickly was something that wasn’t on the expected lines from the Englishman. As Morgan said in the post-match chat, there is nothing in KKR’s hand apart from getting a win against Rajasthan and then hoping that somehow the equations favour them.

CSK vs KKR: What Experts said as Ruturaj Gaikwad ‘sparkles’ again to beat Kolkata

Kolkata Knight Riders finally paid for their nonunderstandable team management as they have been almost eliminated after a six-wicket loss to bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings in Dubai. While Ruturaj Gaikwad’s sparkling innings did put a lot of strain on the opponents, but the credit of the loss must also go to the team management of KKR who did not refrain from experimenting even today as Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh were sent ahead of skipper Eoin Morgan, that too at a time when the team struggled badly. In the bowling department too, they had the game in their hand until after bowling three perfect yorkers, Lockie Ferguson, the most trusted asset bowled three full tosses in the next four balls of the 19th over, which also included a waist-high no-ball. He gave away 20 runs in that and Kamlesh Nagarkoti needed to defend 10. He dragged the match down to 6 runs from 2 balls and then bowled two length deliveries which were happily deposited for two sixes by Ravindra Jadeja. Thus Chennai chased down 173 with the help of some brilliant batting by Gaikawad at the beginning and Jadeja at the end. Captains’ Viewpoints Reacting to the victory, winning captain of MS Dhoni said, “I think it was one game in which the climax went in our favour. A lot of credit goes to the guys.” Sam Curran failed to deliver what was expected of him, however, that did not deter CSK from winning luckily.Speaking about Curran, Dhoni said, “This season he has been fantastic. He has been the only one in our team who has scored in the death overs. He needed somebody else and that would have been good for us.” Having called Gaikwad and other youngsters as spark-less, Dhoni now went on to praise him for being able to score brilliantly in the last two games. “Rituraj has shown the talent that he is. He came in and got positive with Covid. We didn't have much time to have a look at him. He is one of the talented youngsters going around. He is not someone who speaks a lot.” Adding that Ruturaj wasn’t batting at his usual slot of opening the initial innings, the CSK captain said, “When we made him play the first game, he stepped out and got out. But one ball is never enough. I think it is very exciting how he has grabbed his chances.” Calling this victory as an opportunity to remain relevant in the league, the 39-year-old said, “It is very important to be relevant in the tournament. It was very important for us to give it our best. We are not in a position to qualify for the next stage but we have had a glimpse of people who can play for us in the coming seasons.” Eoin Morgan, the losing captain was more frustrated than disappointed with the result of the game. “I think we played really well there, just on the wrong side of the toss. The dew from about the 8th over was really challenging,” he said. Citing improvement in the batting department, the Englishman said, “We improved on our batting (as compared to the previous games). Our bowlers absolutely gave it everything.” Talking about the next game against Rajasthan Royals, where even a victory couldn’t guarantee the Knight Riders a place in the Playoffs, Morgan said, “We have one game left, and still have a very little chance. We felt we were right in the game (at the halfway stage). Nitish Rana kicked on and showed his class once again. It was actually a good day for us with the bat.” Saying that he cannot find anybody particular at fault, the 33-year-old praised the two spinners in his team. “They (Narine and Varun) are two fantastic spinners. I can't fault anyone's effort tonight. He (Nagarkoti) didn't have enough runs to defend,” he said. “He's a young guy; he will take it on the chin and move forward,” he added praising Kamlesh Nagarkoti who almost defended 10 runs in the last over. Expert Opinion The team management of Kolkata has irritated not only the fans but also the cricket experts with certain decisions of theirs. In today’s light of discussion were their decisions and the brilliant display of batting by youngster Ruturaj. Senior cricket analyst Boria Majumdar praised the young Ruturaj Gaikwad for his superb innings of 72 off 53 balls and also said that legendary Indian batsman Sachin had predicted that Ruturaj is one for the long haul, especially after seeing his temperament. Aakash Chopra talked about another youngster, Varun Chakravarthy and how dismissed the former Indian and current CSK skipper MS Dhoni. Discussing the game, veteran journalist Ayaz Memon summed it up quite nicely. Vimal Kumar, a senior broadcast cricket journalist talked about how one week was enough to change the perception of people about many things, including Ruturaj Gaikwad. For Chennai it is almost impossible to qualify, however, Kolkata still have an outside chance, but for that to happen they have got to win their last game against Rajasthan Royals.
