IND vs SL | Virat Kohli goes past 8000-run mark in Test cricket

Former India skipper Virat Kohli added another feather to his hat after he notched up 8000 Test runs during the first innings of the first match against Sri Lanka in Mohali. Kohli achieved the feat in his 100th Test.

Kohli is the sixth Indian batsman to go past 8000-run mark and has now joined the elite list comprising Sachin Tendulkar (15921), Rahul Dravid (13288), Sunil Gavaskar (10122), VVS Laxman (8781) and Virender Sehwag (8586).

Opting to bat first, India were off to a steady start with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal putting up a 52-run partnership before the captain departed for 29. Mayank was then joined by Hanuma Vihari and the two batters chipped in a few runs before Agarwal was trapped in front of the stumps for 33.

Later, Kohli walked out in the middle in the first session of the day’s play and he along with Vihari showed some brilliance with the bat and stitched a stand of over 50 runs for the third wicket.

Kohli was eventually cleaned up by Embuldeniya for 45.

India had a decent start to the proceedings in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali as the hosts ended the first session at 109/2 with Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli at the crease. Winning the toss in his first Test as captain, Rohit Sharma opted to bat first and he along with his opening partner Mayank Agarwal provided India with a solid start. The two batters put up a partnership of 52 runs for the first wicket before Sharma pulled a short delivery from Lahiru Kumara straight to Lakmal who was stationed at deep fine leg to get dismissed for 29. Mayank was then joined by Hanuma Vihari who came out to bat at number three. The batters steadied the ship for the side and stitched a stand of 28 runs but Embuldeniya eventually broke the partnership after he trapped a well-settled Mayank in front of the stumps for 33. Later, Kohli and Vihari made sure that there were no further fall of wickets in the session. The former Indian skipper is playing his 100th Test and was felicitated before the start of the match.

Former India captain Virat Kohli has added another feather to his hat as the right-hander is playing his 100th Test for the team. Kohli was earlier felicitated before the match for achieving the milestone and was presented a special memento in Mohali. Coach Rahul Dravid lauded Kohli for his achievement. "It's well deserved, well earned, and hopefully it is just the start of many things to come. As we say in the dressing room, double it up,” he said. Kohli thanked his family, coach and the BCCI. "I want to thank the BCCI and getting my 100th Test cap from one of my childhood heroes is indeed amazing," Kohli said. "It is a special moment for me. My wife is here and so is my brother. Everyone is very proud. It is indeed a team game and it couldn't have been possible without you. With the amount we play with three formats and an IPL, the one takeaway the next generation can take from me is that I played 100 games in the purest format," he added. The right-handed batsman joined the elite list which comprises of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma.

India were off to an aggressive start against Sri Lanka in the first innings of the first Test on Day 1 in Mohali after skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal put up a 52-run stand of the first wicket. The two batters began the proceedings in a cautious manner but didn’t shy away from playing the strokes. Both the batsmen looked steady but Lahiru Kumara struck just at the right time after he bowled a short one to Sharma. The right-hander pulled the delivery but found a man at deep fine leg to be caught for 29 by Lakmal. Rohit is making his Test captaincy debut in this match while Virat Kohli is playing his 100th game in the format. “It is a huge honour to be captaining India and be part of the list. It is something I never dreamt of. It has been quite buzzing. We know it is a special occasion. Not many people go on to play 100 Tests, and Virat has been looking forward to this game. We are playing three spinners and two seamers,” Rohit said at the toss.
