Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has pointed out that Shreyas Iyer needs to improve his game against fast bowling if he wants to establish himself in international cricket.
Iyer's struggles against pace bowling were once again on full show during the opening T20I against South Africa.
While he attacked wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi with disdain, the right-handed top-order batsman could only manage 13 from 17 deliveries against the pacers before eventually getting bowled by Dwaine Pretorius for a 27-ball 36.
Speaking on ESPNCricinfo's post-match show, Jaffer said that Shreyas, due to his constant movement at the crease, gets stuck while facing pace bowling.
The former opener added that the Mumbai lad must add a few more shots in his arsenal to counter pacers as he is someone who bats in the top-order.
"You kind of know when Shreyas gets stuck, he moves around in the wicket a lot. He goes outside and wants to access the off-side. Otherwise, you won't see him hitting a lot of boundaries or sixes off the fast bowlers. He did take down Shamsi, and then, later on, Ishan Kishan took on the Keshav Maharaj threat,"
"Look at the future, and he needs to develop some shots with which he can dominate the fast bowlers. He is batting in the top 4, and he is not somebody who comes at the backend. So he has to improve his game, especially the boundary hitting against fast bowlers. That innings could have been a little bit better. 10-15 more would have come if he had hit a couple more boundaries in this innings," he added.
Meanwhile, legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn is confident that Shreyas will work with head coach and legendary batsman Rahul Dravid to counter his weakness ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place on the pacy pitches of Australia.
"Knowing that the World Cup is going to be in Australia this year, he is going to have to combat that, facing lot more seamers than spinners. That said, he has a couple more months to work on that. He is a great player, and he will work with Rahul Dravid and figure out how to work out that aspect of his game," Steyn said.
Iyer's issues against pacers, especially against hard length, have been a talking point in recent months. He also struggled against pacers in the recent IPL and will have to find a way to combat it if he wants to have a long, successful career for India.
