IND vs SA | He needs to develop some shots with which he can dominate the fast bowlers: Wasim Jaffer

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has pointed out that Shreyas Iyer needs to improve his game against fast bowling if he wants to establish himself in international cricket.

Iyer's struggles against pace bowling were once again on full show during the opening T20I against South Africa.

While he attacked wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi with disdain, the right-handed top-order batsman could only manage 13 from 17 deliveries against the pacers before eventually getting bowled by Dwaine Pretorius for a 27-ball 36.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo's post-match show, Jaffer said that Shreyas, due to his constant movement at the crease, gets stuck while facing pace bowling.

The former opener added that the Mumbai lad must add a few more shots in his arsenal to counter pacers as he is someone who bats in the top-order.

"You kind of know when Shreyas gets stuck, he moves around in the wicket a lot. He goes outside and wants to access the off-side. Otherwise, you won't see him hitting a lot of boundaries or sixes off the fast bowlers. He did take down Shamsi, and then, later on, Ishan Kishan took on the Keshav Maharaj threat,"

"Look at the future, and he needs to develop some shots with which he can dominate the fast bowlers. He is batting in the top 4, and he is not somebody who comes at the backend. So he has to improve his game, especially the boundary hitting against fast bowlers. That innings could have been a little bit better. 10-15 more would have come if he had hit a couple more boundaries in this innings," he added.

Meanwhile, legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn is confident that Shreyas will work with head coach and legendary batsman Rahul Dravid to counter his weakness ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place on the pacy pitches of Australia.

"Knowing that the World Cup is going to be in Australia this year, he is going to have to combat that, facing lot more seamers than spinners. That said, he has a couple more months to work on that. He is a great player, and he will work with Rahul Dravid and figure out how to work out that aspect of his game," Steyn said.

Iyer's issues against pacers, especially against hard length, have been a talking point in recent months. He also struggled against pacers in the recent IPL and will have to find a way to combat it if he wants to have a long, successful career for India.

SL v AUS 2022 | Kasun Rajitha and Matheesha Pathirana ruled out from the 3rd T20I

Sri Lankan fast-bowling duo of Kasun Rajitha and Matheesha Pathirana have been ruled out of the final T20I against Australia due to their respective injuries. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) confirmed the development on the morning of the final T20I of the series through a tweet. The statement revealed that both players suffered their respective injuries during the training session. While Rajitha has suffered a left-hip injury, Pathirana is being troubled by an injury in his right elbow. The national selection committee has named Asitha Fernando and Pramod Madushan as replacements for Rajitha and Pathirana, respectively. "Injuries - Kasun Rajitha and Matheesha Pathirana have suffered injuries, while training and will not take further part in the T20I series," the statement stated. "Rajitha has suffered an injury on his 'Left Hip,' whilst Pathirana has suffered an injury on his 'Right Elbow’.” The statement further added: "In the meantime, Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee made the following replacements to the T20I squad, in place of the two injured players. 1. Asitha Fernando comes in place of Kasun Rajitha 2.Pramod Madushan comes in place of Matheesha Pathirana" That said, it is unlikely to affect Lanka's starting XI as the duo did not find a place in the team for the first two games. Meanwhile, the home side will look to bounce back after suffering consecutive humiliating defeats against the world champions and end the series on a high. As has been the case in the last 5-6 years, the Lankan batting has proved to be their nemesis in this series as well. The middle-order has failed to capitalize on the starts provided by the top-order, paving the way for fatal collapses. In the first game, Sri Lanka collapsed from 100/2 to 128 all-out, while in the last match, they suffered a similar fate as they meandered to a pain-staking 124/9. The final T20I will offer the home side batters a chance to find some much-needed form and confidence as they head into a crucial five-match One-day International series against the Aaron Finch-led unit.

'He is a great leader on and off the field': Dewald Brevis heaps praise on MI skipper, Rohit Sharma

Dewald Brevis grabbed the cricketing world's attention in 2022, mainly through his exploits in the U19 World Cup in West Indies and then in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Popularly dubbed as the 'Baby AB', Brevis was picked up in the IPL mega-auction by Mumbai Indians (MI). The young Protea batter certainly did not disappoint in his first ever IPL season, as he did put on a couple of impactful performances. Although Brevis was not a part of the playing XI on a regular basis, yet it was a great learning curve for the youngster. The 19-year-old was grateful for his time with MI this season and lavished praise on skipper Rohit Sharma. "As a player I couldn't have asked for a better captain. He backed me and supported me as a young player. He allowed me to be myself and go out there and enjoy the game," Brevis said, as quoted by NDTV. The ‘Hitman’ has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, and as such, he is not doubting his captain ability. 'Baby AB' revealed that the veteran batter strives to bring the best out of everybody and touched upon his role outside the playing field. "He is a captain that wants the best out of everybody. I think he is a great leader on and off the field. There is so much to learn from his captaincy and knowledge of the game. He is an exceptional captain," Brevis added. The Ambani-owned franchise had one of their worst ever IPL seasons in 2022, where they finished at the bottom of the points tally. The most successful franchise could manage to collect just four wins from their 14 games. Despite the setback, the U19 World Cup sensation was all praises for the atmosphere in the MI dressing room. "The MI team atmosphere was amazing on and off the field. There was always lots of fun, laughter and bonding between everyone in the MI family. It is such a great honour for me to be part of MI. They made me feel part of the family. I felt so welcome and comfortable in this team. I could be myself in front of everyone," Brevis added. The Jo'burg-born scored 161 runs in seven games this season, at an impressive strike rate of over 140. The South African batter timed the ball to perfection and is certainly a player to watch out for in the coming years.
