IND vs NZ | 2nd T20I: India look to seal series; New Zealand eye comeback

India will lock horns with New Zealand in the second T20I in Ranchi on Friday (November 19, 2021). The Men in Blue rode on some good batting from the new T20I skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav to win the first match by 5 wickets in Jaipur on Wednesday.

On the other side, Martin Guptill and Chapman showed some brilliant skills with the bat as the two batters notched up individual fifties and helped New Zealand put 164/5 on the board. Though, their efforts went in vain as India clinched the victory in the final over.

While the Rohit Sharma-led side will now look to seal the series, New Zealand will seek a comeback in Ranchi.

Match Details

Match: IND vs NZ, 2nd T20I, New Zealand tour of India, 2021

Date: Friday, November 19, 2021

Time: 7:00 PM

Venue: JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi

Pitch Report

The track in Ranchi might help the batters in the later stage of the game. On the other side, the spinners can get some help in the middle overs. So, if you win the toss, elect to field first.

India need small tweaks

The home side rode on brilliance with the bat from the skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav as they chased down the target to win the game. But the team management does need to fix some issues and one of them is the middle order failure with the bat.

While Shreyas Iyer didn’t really get into the groove, Rishabh Pant struggled to connect the ball while the two were out there in the middle. Debutant Venkatesh Iyer struck an important boundary during the course but gave away his wicket at a crucial junction in the match.

Apart from this, Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar were very costly.

New Zealand middle-order woes

The visitors might have put up a decent total on the board in the first game but their middle order failed to fire as well. Barring Guptill and Chapman, none of the batsmen really took up the onus to capitalise on the foundation that the two batters had laid.

The New Zealand team management would want the other players to be among runs to make a comeback in the series.

Team News

India: The Indian team began the series on a positive note and they are unlikely to make any changes in the XI. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj got a bit of an injury scare in the previous game when he was hit on his hand in the follow through.

However, the right-arm bowler completed his over. There is no official update on Siraj’s injury and whether he will play the next game or not. But if he misses out then Avesh Khan might get a chance in the XI.

New Zealand: New Zealand might bring in Ish Sodhi in place of Todd Astle who returned with pretty expensive figures of 0/34 in three overs. Apart from this, the visitors would like to continue with the same bunch of players when they take the field on Friday.

India: Rohit Sharma(C), KL Rahul (VC), Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Venkatesh Iyer, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Mohammad Siraj/Avesh Khan

SMAT 2021: Karnataka steal a win in Super Over thriller against Bengal

Karnataka captain Manish Pandey had a brilliant last half an hour of play against Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarter-final match in Delhi when he first hit the bull’s eye to run out Akash Deep on the final ball of the innings and then hit the winning stroke for his side in the Super Over. Karnataka and Bengal were involved in a nail-biting encounter on Thursday. After batting first, Karnataka rode on some brisk batting display from Karun Nair to put 160/5 in 20 overs on the board. Karan scored an aggressive 29-ball 55 that included three sixes and four fours. Later, Bengal lost a few wickets at regular succession and were 51/3 when Writtick Chatterjee and Kaif Ahmed took on the onus on themselves and stitched a valuable partnership of 49 runs for the fourth wicket. But Kaif’s dismissal saw a couple of more wickets going down, leaving Bengal in a spot of bother at 108/6. Later, Bengal needed 20 off the last over and Ritwik Chowdhury unveiled an exciting batting display as he scored 13 in the first three deliveries while Akash Deep who had just joined him in the middle scored in the next two deliveries bringing the equation down to 1 needed off 1. Akash Deep pushed this delivery to steal a single towards the off side but a brilliant throw from Manish Pandey who was stationed inside the circle scalped his wicket to end the match in a tie and take it into the Super Over. The Bengal side then could only manage to score 5 runs as they lost both the wickets and it took Pandey just two deliveries to wrap up the game and help his side make a place in the semis.

SMAT 2021: Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Vidarbha, Karnataka register semis berth

It turned out to be a pretty eventful day in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 after Bengal and Karnataka were involved in a Super Over tie in Delhi on Thursday. While Karnataka eventually clinched a win, Tamil Nadu, Vidarbha and Hyderabad were the other three teams to march in the semi-final of the competition. Tamil Nadu vs Kerala Batting first, Kerala rode on some aggressive hitting from Vishnu Vinod who remained unbeaten at 65 off 26, a knock that included seven maximums and a couple of fours during the course to post 181/4 in 20 overs on the board. Apart from Vinod, Kunnummal also notched up a fifty for his side. In reply, Tamil Nadu were off to a decent start but it was Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar who took up the responsibility and chipped in with a partnership of 57 runs for the third wicket before Sudharsan departed for a 31-ball 46. Later, Shankar was joined by Sanjay Yadav and the two batters stitched a stand of 30 runs for the fourth wicket. But it was a late surge from Shahrukh Khan who came in at number six that anchored the side to a win by 5 wickets. Shahrukh struck 19* off 9. Rajasthan vs Vidarbha Vidarbha thumped Rajasthan by 9 wickets after they chased down a small target of 85 runs in less than 15 overs. Openers Atharva Taide and Ganesh Satish provided the side with a steady start as the two put up 63 runs for the first wicket on the board. Satish departed for 28 off 33 but Taide along with Akshay Wadkar took the side home. Taide remained unbeaten at 40 off 42. Earlier, in the day, Vidarbha bowlers did a fantastic job for the team as they restricted Rajasthan to 84/8 in 20 overs. Rajasthan never really got into the groove and lost wickets at regular intervals. Nagarkoti top-scored for them with 39* off 48. Akshay Karnewar was the pick of the bowlers for Vidarbha as he returned with figures of 1/7 in 4 overs. Bengal vs Karnataka It was a thrilling match between Bengal and Karnataka after the clash went into the Super Over before Karnataka eventually stole away the win. Bengal needed 20 off the last over while chasing 161 and managed to score 19 in five deliveries before an exceptional fielding effort from Manish Pandey gave them Akash Deep’s wicket on the final ball of the match with the scores levelled. Bengal then scored only five runs after they lost both the wickets. Karnataka then took just a couple of deliveries to chase down the target. Gujarat vs Hyderabad Hyderabad clinched a comfortable win against Gujarat by 30 runs after restricting them to 128/8 while chasing 159. Gujarat didn’t really have a good start to the chase and lost wickets at regular intervals and were left tottering at 96/6 to eventually lose the game. Telukupalli Ravi Teja scalped a three-fer for 27 runs in 4 overs. Earlier, Tilak Verma unleashed a batting masterclass after he struck 75 off 50 deliveries to help his side put 158/5 in 20 overs. Tamil Nadu will now play Hyderabad and Karnataka will be up against Vidarbha in the semis scheduled to take place on Saturday in Delhi.

Jack Brooks apologises to Cheteshwar Pujara for calling him 'Steve' while being at Yorkshire

Somerset pace bowler Jack Brooks has apologised to India’s batsman Cheteshwar Pujara for calling him with the name “Steve” during their time at the Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He has defended his case saying the idea of giving nicknames as a common idea in the dressing room and was completely devoid of any racial or discriminational intentions but accepted the method as “disrespectful” to Pujara and his family. "With reference to my naming in Azeem Rafiq's statement to MPs this week, the use of the name 'Steve' related to some people having difficult names to pronounce," Brooks said. "When this has occurred in the past in a dressing room environment, it has been commonplace to give nicknames, regardless of creed or race. I admit to having used it in this context and now accept that it was disrespectful and wrong to do so. "I have reached out and apologised to Cheteshwar for any offence that I have caused him or his family. At the time I didn't recognise this as racist behaviour, but I can now see that it was not acceptable." He also apologised for the historical tweets he sent in the year 2012 and extended his “unreserved” apologies. "I acknowledge that the language used in two tweets I made in 2012 was unacceptable and I deeply regret using it," Brooks said. "I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused to anybody who may have seen these tweets." Brooks’ name was out in the open when Azeem Rafiq called out him calling Pujara by “Steve” although the right-hander was clearly not comfortable with the nickname.

Knee injury complicated after rushed return, but Finch eager to lead Australia in next T20 World Cup

Australia skipper Aaron Finch is eager to lead his side in the defence of the T20 World Cup when the tournament will come home next year albeit conceding his longstanding fitness concerns with the knee injury. Finch said that he will need some time off the game to sort his knee completely which also affected his game in the T20 World Cup. He also lacked assurance over his rehabilitation and said that the next few weeks will determine his growth and return to full fitness. "If I can get there, absolutely," Finch said. "I probably need a little bit of extra time to get my knee right now. I pushed the rehab really hard and probably paid the price for it a little bit throughout the tournament. So yeah, maybe a little bit more time off at the moment to just make sure I get that right. "I'll wait and see over the next couple of weeks and not sure when our first game is for the Renegades Adelaide but we'll wait and see to see if I'm right." Earlier today, Finch gave up on the captaincy of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League take cognisance of the toll the leadership takes on one’s mental state and also with physical injury concerns. However, the same sort of pattern has not been employed yet for Australia even though he has had a conversation with the chairman of selectors George Bailey. He has all but ruled out leadership change for Australia’s world cup winning side and said that his conversation with Bailey was more to do with charting out a blueprint for the near future. "I've spoken a Bails about that over the last probably six months that. There's going to be a period over the next two or three years definitely but that was all. That wasn't an in-depth conversation. Was just more to put on the to-do list over the next couple of months,” Finch added.
