The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to begin on March 22, 2025. The first match of the season will see defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, there is a high chance that the match might get canceled due to heavy rainfall in Kolkata.
Heavy Rain Expected In Kolkata
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and rain in South Bengal from March 21 to March 24. An orange alert has been issued for March 22, which means heavy rain and strong winds are expected. The next day, a yellow alert has been issued, indicating slightly less severe weather conditions.
Starting from March 21, thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds will hit Kolkata and other areas of South Bengal. The rainfall is expected to lower the temperature in the city. Here’s the weather forecast for the upcoming days:
- March 20: 24°C - 34°C | Rain or thundershowers with strong winds
- March 21: 22°C - 32°C | Rain or thundershowers with strong winds
- March 22: 22°C - 29°C | Thunderstorm with rain (High chance of match cancellation)
- March 23: 23°C - 30°C | Thunderstorm with rain
- March 24: 24°C - 32°C | Partly cloudy sky
- March 25: 24°C - 33°C | Clear sky
This match is crucial as both teams will be playing under new captains. Rajat Patidar has been named the new captain of RCB, while Ajinkya Rahane will lead KKR, replacing Shreyas Iyer. Venkatesh Iyer will be the team’s vice-captain.
Grand IPL 2025 Opening Ceremony
Before the match, IPL 2025 will kick off with a grand opening ceremony at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This will be the first time since 2015 that Kolkata is hosting the opening ceremony. According to IPL rules, the team that wins the previous season hosts the opening ceremony, tournament opener, and the final at its home ground the next year.
The event will feature performances by popular singers Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and actress Disha Patani. The ceremony will include dance performances, live music, a laser show, and cultural performances representing West Bengal’s heritage. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries are expected to attend.
