ILT20 2022-23 | Andy Flower named Gulf Giants' head coach

Andy Flower, one of the most sought-after coaches in franchise cricket, has been appointed head coach of the Gulf Giants franchise in the upcoming Emirates Cricket Board's (ECB) organized International League T20 (ILT20).


The Gulf Giants are a team owned by Adani Sportline, which falls under the Adani Group.


Flower spoke about his new appointment in a statement, saying, "I am very proud to be associated with the Adani Group, particularly Adani Sportsline. Most people are aware of the company's power, size and reach in general, and it's wonderful to see their commitment to sports. It's exciting to be a part of any of the big franchise tournaments, and the ILT20 has big plans to be a major franchise tournament".


As for the Gulf franchise, Adani Group, in their statement, explained, "The Gulf Giants is an extension of Adani Sportsline's brand - Gujarat Giants. The word 'Gulf' in the name refers to the region in which the matches will be played. The Adani Group is also very proud to be participating in a tournament that will be held in a country with a rich culture and history".


The former Zimbabwean captain has worked in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with franchises like the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Punjab Kings (PKBS).


He also coaches the Kings-owned Caribbean Premier League (CPL) side, Saint Lucia Kings. In addition, Flower won the Pakistan Super League (PSL) title with Multan Sultan (MS) in 2021.


He has tasted international success with the England side, winning the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.


The 54-year-old is also associated with the Delhi Bulls franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, having been with Maratha Arabians earlier.


IL T20 and Indian connnection


ILT20 will begin on January 6 and will witness 34 matches across cricketing venues in the UAE.


Apart from the Adani Group, other Indian investors include Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shahrukh Khan, who owns the Abu Dhabi-based club.


Mumbai Indians owners Reliance Industries and GMR have also bought franchises. GMR owns the Dubai-based team.
