Australian women's team suffered a major blow before the start of the ongoing World Cup as the star all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner tested positive for COVID-19 and will not feature in the marquee tournament at least till March 13.


Meanwhile, World Cup’s Event Technical Committee has approved Heather Graham as Gardner's temporary replacement. 


Gardner, who tested positive for COVID-19 on March 3, missed Australia's first fixture of the mega event against England. She will remain in isolation for 10 days and perhaps has been ruled out of her side's upcoming encounter, scheduled on March 13 against New Zealand.


Once the right-handed all-rounder recovers, she will be available for selection and her temporary replacement, Graham will move out of the squad.


A temporary replacement approved by the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which comprises Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events (Chair), Adrian Griffith, ICC Senior Manager Umpires and Referees (ICC Representative), Andrea Nelson, LOC CEO (Host Representative), Catherine Campbell (Host Representative), Sana Mir (Independent), Nasser Hussain (Independent).


Graham, who is a fast-bowling all-rounder,  does not have much international experience as her sole outing at the highest level came against Sri Lanka. However, the right-arm pacer grabbed eyeballs in the latest concluded Big Bash League, where she scalped 18 wickets for the tournament-winning Perth Scorchers. 


Australia opened their campaign with a hard-earned victory against the defending champions, England. They will next be up against the White Ferns on March 13.

Hosts New Zealand were back on track in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 after clinching a 9-wicket win against Bangladesh in Dunedin on Monday in a rain-curtailed fixture. The match was reduced to 27-over per side after rain played spoilsport and New Zealand were handed a target of 141 runs. Bangladesh managed to pick an early wicket after Salma Khatun cleaned up Sophie Devine for 14 off 16 but the Asian side couldn’t really capitalise on the start they got as Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr came in for the rescue. The two batters stitched an unbeaten partnership of 108 runs for the second wicket. While Bates was not out for 79 off just 68 balls, Kerr was 47* off 37. Earlier, in the day, Bangladesh started off the proceedings well with openers Shamima Sultana and Fargana Hoque putting up a stand of 59 runs for the first wicket. But Sultana’s departure pushed the side on the back foot as they began to lose wickets at regular intervals and were 119/6 at one stage before ending the innings at 140/8. Hoque scored 52 off 63. Satterthwaite was the pick of the bowlers after she scalped three wickets for 25 runs in 5 overs. “It's the nature of this tournament (on asked about overcoming the disappointing loss to WI), we have games coming quickly with very less turnaround time. Grateful to the ground staff for getting a game of nearly 50 overs, to Bangladesh for coming up and the umpires for getting the game on,” Devine said after the match.

Chasing 212 in the second innings, the Jharkhand side lost some early wickets and were 49/4 when Saurabh Tiwary and Kumar Kushagra joined hands and stitched a stand of 90 runs for the fifth wicket to provide the much-needed resistance.
