I have to do a lot of work just to maintain my lower body, hamstring: Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has said that he has to do “a lot of maintenance work” to keep himself fit and injury-free.

“Maintaining what I have built up in the last three or four months. Obviously I was injured during the last IPL. So there’s a lot of maintenance work that I have to keep doing just to maintain my lower body, hamstring and stuff like that,” Sharma said in ‘Captain’s Corner’, a video posted by Mumbai Indians on its Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Sharma further praised his team’s fitness regime and the way the players are doing the drills to stay in shape. “It is great to see some of the fast bowlers who played in yesterday’s game come out and do the fitness drills, which is always nice. That’s what MI always takes pride in. Putting that extra yard in, that’s why we get the results in our favour,” he said.

MI will play KKR on Tuesday (April 13). The Rohit Sharma-led side had a disappointing start to the tournament after they lost to Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match and would be looking to turn fortunes for themselves in the clash against KKR.

MI are the most successful team in the IPL having won the title five times. They are the reigning champions after getting their hands on the trophy in 2019 and 2020 editions. Rohit’s troops would now be seeking to complete a hat trick of title wins in this season.

Quinton de Kock available for selection for clash against KKR: Zaheer Khan

South Africa and Mumbai Indians wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock will be available for selection for Mi’s next fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders scheduled to take place on Tuesday, confirmed Director of Cricket Zaheer Khan. "Quinton is out of his quarantine. He did his practice session yesterday with the team, [he’s] looking forward to the season. So yes, he’s available for tomorrow’s game," Zaheer said. De Kock had missed the opening encounter against RCB as he had been serving a mandatory seven-day quarantine. De Kock has been an integral part of MI setup for quite sometime now while has a decent experience of playing in the IPL. He was earlier a part of the RCB franchise before joining Mumbai Indians. The left-handed batsman has played 66 IPL matches scoring 1959 runs at an average of 31.59 and a strike rate of over 133. Mumbai had a forgettable start to the campaign after they lost to RCB in Chennai in the first match of the tournament. Batting first, the Rohit-Sharma led side only managed 159/9 in 20 overs. Chris Lynn who made his debut for MI in this match top-scored with 49 while RCB’s Harshal Patel scalped a fifer during the course. Patel became the first bowler to pick a five-wicket haul against MI in the IPL. RCB had a steady start to chase but the fall of wickets at regular intervals in the middle overs pushed them on the backfoot before AB de Villiers came in for the rescue. The right-handed batsman scored 48 off 27 and helped RCB win the match by 2 wickets eventually.

Riyan is a special player, Sakariya bowled really well: Sangakkara hails youngsters

Rajasthan Royals might have ended up losing the close encounter against Punjab Kings but their director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara has heaped praise for the youngsters especially Riyan Parag who chipped in with a quick-fire 25 off 11 that included three maximums. RR were set a target of 222 by the Punjab Kings but they fell short of it by just 4 runs. Captain Sanju Samson scored a fine ton while Parag, Shivam Dube and Jos Buttler chipped in with some brisk batting display. “"Riyan is a special player as you would have seen," said Sangakkara after the game. "He has amazing hand speed and great composure,” Sangakkara said. Samson and Parag had a decent partnership of 52 runs before Parag was sent back in the hut by Mohammed Shami after being caught by KL Rahul behind the stumps. "When you play with freedom sometimes wickets do fall. Sanju and him had a wonderful partnership and got us into the game with batters to come to try and finish it. I'm really encouraged by the passion and the commitment shown by the younger players,” the former Sri Lankan captain added. Fast bowler Chetan Sakariya too impressed everyone with his bowling after the left-arm pacer returned with figures of 3/31 in 4 overs on a track that had a lot to offer to the batsmen. Talking about Sakariya, Sangakkara hailed the youngsters ability and admitted that he showed his skills in such a high-scoring match. “I think he was just brilliant. You know his skill was on display but it was really wonderful to watch him bowl well in such a high-scoring match,” he said. RR will now take on Delhi Capitals on April 15 in Mumbai.

Don’t have words to tell: Sanju Samson on his last ball-dismissal vs Punjab Kings

Rajasthan Royals newly-appointed captain Sanju Samson played one of the finest innings of his career after he scored 119 off 63 balls but in a losing cause in Mumbai on Monday. Chasing a mammoth 222 in 20 overs, RR were off to a disappointing start after Ben Stokes who opened the innings for the Royals went back to the hut without opening his account. Samson who came in at number three first stitched a 45-run stand with Jos Buttler for the third wicket and then had a couple of good partnerships with Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag that gave the Royals some hope of going over the line. Though they eventually failed to do so Samson's fine knock attracted a lot of praise from all around. Talking about his innings, the high-handed batsman told that he only started to play his shots after getting his eye in. “The second part of the innings was the best I ever played. In the first part, I was not timing it very well. I took my time, respected the bowlers, took singles and got into a rhythm and then I started to play my shots in the second half,” he said at the post-match presentation. Samson took the onus on himself to take the team over the line. RR needed 5 off the last two balls when he denied the single and decided to back himself to go for a big one on the last ball. The wicket-keeper batsman did connect the ball from Arshdeep but somehow found a fielder in the deep to get dismissed at deep extra cover. Rajasthan lost by 4 runs. Expressing his disappointment about the same, Sanju said that he did time the ball well but couldn’t clear the ropes. “I don’t have words to tell, very close game, came close but unfortunately.. I don’t think I could have done anything more,” he said. “I timed it well, but unfortunately couldn’t clear the man in the deep. It’s all part of the game. We thought the wicket was getting better and we could chase the target down. Despite the loss, I think the team played really well,” he added.
