The stage is set and the Southern Derby is back to set the IPL 2025 ablaze. On Friday, March 28, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will square off against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and if there’s one man with a point to prove, it’s CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
After taking over the reins from the legendary MS Dhoni in IPL 2024, Gaikwad’s leadership has been under the microscope. While he has shown signs of maturity beyond his years, his own performances especially against RCB have left a lot to be desired.
Now, as the two giants lock horns again, let’s revisit how Ruturaj Gaikwad performed against RCB last season (IPL 2024):
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Performance Vs RCB In 2024
Last season, Gaikwad's bat did more whispering than roaring against RCB. Despite CSK and RCB sharing the spoils with a win each, Gaikwad’s individual returns were far from ideal.
Match 1: CSK vs RCB – March 22, 2024 (Chennai)
In what was his captaincy debut, Gaikwad managed a scratchy 15 off 15 balls, falling to Yash Dayal just as he looked set to tee off. However, Chennai Super Kings pulled a rabbit out of the hat, winning by 6 wickets, thanks to Mustafizur Rahman’s four-fer.
Gaikwad, though not shining with the bat, drew praise for his composed leadership, keeping his cool when the chips were down.
Match 2: RCB vs CSK – May 18, 2024 (Bengaluru)
This was the big one: a virtual knockout. CSK needed to win to stay alive in the tournament. But in a cruel twist of fate, Gaikwad perished on the very first ball of the chase, a golden duck at the hands of Glenn Maxwell. The timing couldn’t have been worse.
His dismissal put CSK behind the eight ball early, and they never truly recovered. RCB emerged victorious by 27 runs, dashing CSK’s playoff hopes and leaving Gaikwad with plenty to chew on during the off-season.

New Season, New Intent?
They say form is temporary but class is permanent and Gaikwad has all the makings of a top-drawer IPL captain. He is cool as a cucumber, technically sound and humble in both success and failure. But the upcoming CSK vs RCB clash is where he needs to come out all guns blazing, not just as a leader but as a batter too.
Returning to Chepauk, CSK’s fortress, might just be the shot in the arm he needs. The home fans will back him to the hilt and with confidence running high after a win in their IPL 2025 opener, CSK will be eager to settle scores with RCB.
