Shaharyar Khan, the former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), breathed his last today in Lahore at the age of 89 after battling illness.

Khan, a prominent figure in cricket diplomacy, played a pivotal role in rekindling cricket ties between Pakistan and India in the early 2000s.

Hailing from the esteemed lineage of the Bhopal royal family, Khan was the son of Nawab Muhammad Sarwar Ali Khan and Princess Begum Abida Sultan.

His maternal connection intertwined deeply with Indian cricket history as he was the first cousin of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the legendary former Indian captain and father of bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.

Shaharyar Khan's mother, Princess Begum Abida Sultan, and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's mother, Nawab Begum of Bhopal, Sajida Sultan, were sisters, making Shaharyar Khan and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi maternal first cousins.

Despite the geographical and professional boundaries that separated them, the bond between Shaharyar Khan and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi remained strong, bridging the realms of cricket and royalty.

Both figures left indelible marks on the cricketing world, with Khan's diplomatic endeavors and Pataudi's on-field brilliance earning them admiration and respect globally.

Shaharyar Khan's tenure as PCB chairman witnessed significant moments in cricket history, including India's tours to Pakistan and his role as Pakistan team manager during crucial international events. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of diplomacy and sportsmanship.

It was worth noticing that Pataudi took his last breath on 22nd September 2011 due to respiratory failure, leaving behind a legacy of cricketing excellence and sportsmanship that continues to inspire generations.
