Hits & Flops as MI down Virat Kohli’s Bangalore courtesy Surya-Bumrah show

Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumarah combined to humble Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets in Abu Dhabi to move closer to the Playoffs of the Indian Premier League 2020.

The Kieron Pollard led team was pushed to the back foot in the initial 10 overs of the game after a brilliant partnership between young guns Josh Philippe and Devdutt Padikkal gave RCB a flying start. However, that did not last long as Mumbai bowlers picked up their line and length and mixed it up throughout the innings to strict RCB to a modest total of 166.

Coming into bat, despite losing a couple of wickets in quick succession, ignored for the Down Under tour, Suryakumar Yadav produced an absolute masterclass to take MI home.

On this note let’s look at the Hits and Flops of the game.

Hits

#1 Suryakumar Yadav

Having not been selected in the Indian team for the limited-over series down-under, Yadav pulled up his socks and decided that it would be his weapon of choice - his bat which would do the talking. And boy did he talk! Taking the attack to the opposition, Surya built partnerships with not just one but four batsmen in Ishan Kishan, Saurabh Tiwari, Krunal Pandya, and Hardik Pandya before winning the game alongside his skipper Kieron Pollard.

In his innings of 73* off just 43 balls, Yadav hit 10 fours and three sixes, puncturing the entire attack of the Bengaluru based team. Yadav, since the start of this season, has scored 362 runs and is looking solid to score some more.

#2 Jasprit Bumrah

RCB at one stage were cruising at 71-0 in seven overs. After that Rahul Chahar got the crucial wicket Joshua Philippe, but then it was all Jasprit Bumrah who started building pressure upon the likes of Virat Kohli and to a certain extent even Devdutt Padikkal, stopping the flow of runs and thereby forcing the players to play rash shots.

In this attempt of his, Bumrah got the wickets of Virat Kohli and Devudtt and later on dismissed Shivam Dube as well. At one stage the score was looking to go beyond 180 as de Villiers and Padikkal were going great at 130-2 in 15 overs, even after the fall of Kohli’s wicket. However, that was pulled back to just 165 courtesy of some nasty yorkers and disguised slower ones from the Gujarati maestro.

With these three scalps, Bumrah has now moved to the second spot in the race to the Purple Cap.

#3 Devdutt Padikkal

Padikkal has shown in this entire tournament that he belongs at the international level, especially with the range of shots that he possesses. In this game, too, he was at the full swing hitting the balls left-right, and centre, and built a crucial 71 run partnership with another youngster Joshua Philippe.

He did not stop there and played well alongside skipper Kohli and senior pro de Villiers as well. In total, Padikkal made 74 off 45 balls with the help of 12 fours and one six.

Flops

#1 Virat Kohli

Virat didn’t just fail as a batsman but also as a captain. Chopping and changing the team so often wouldn’t give satisfactory results as has been seen in the cases of successful teams like Chennai and Mumbai. These teams always back one set of players to win them every match instead of just keep on changing players.

While the changes were surely a flop decision, his batting too was disdainful. Kohli could only muster to score nine runs and played 14 deliveries for that, building pressure on young Padikkal.

#2 Dale Steyn

Steyn was ‘called into the team to swing the ball early on’ as per skipper Kohli. However, he couldn’t get any purchase from the deck. Also in the 18th over, when Mumbai required 27 to win from 18 balls, he was hit for 11 runs, getting the run rate down by a huge margin.

In the entire match, Steyn could not pick up even a single wicket and finished with the figures of 0-43 in his quota of four overs.

With this loss, Virat Kohli and co. now have their task cut out as they will be facing Sunrisres Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals both of which would also be fighting for a qualification spot, just like the RCB.

IPL 2020 | CSK vs KKR: Match Preview, Predicted XI & Dream 11 Fantasy Picks

Chennai Super Kings are out of the tournament and now they are on their way to destroy the chances of certain teams. Kolkata on the other hand have gobbled up- chances in a very lethargic manner, at times showing no interest at all in the game. It is therefore now a do or die moment for them. They have a chance to either win their games and qualify or go back home. In their last game, Chennai have already given a shock to Royal Challengers Bangalore by beating them and not letting them qualify for the Playoffs. Therefore in this game, they would be looking to spoil the party of another team. CSK looks like a complete team for the first time Playing with three spinners in the last game, the Super Kings finally seemed to have had found the perfect 11 which would suit the conditions in Dubai. In the last game too, the team had played in Dubai only while Kolkata would be coming back from Sharjah, changing three tracks in three games. Chennai have with them no baggage to go back to and therefore this game would see them going all guns blazing, meaning that Kolkata have a real danger with them. Dinesh Karthik needs to prove he belongs Dinesh Karthik in the last few matches hasn’t been able to perform up to the expectations of the team or the fans of the Knight Riders so far. Barring one match against Kings XI in which he scored 52 of 29 balls, the Tamil Nadu born hasn’t really been able to middle the balls real nice. But as they say, big players need big stages and Karthik is a big player, therefore, it is just the apt stage for him to prove right the faith shown by the KKR management in him. With a total of just 118 runs in his last 10 innings with a dismal average of 13, Karthik is going through a really rough patch and he needs to come out of it, as soon as possible, if not for the team, then at least for his own sake. Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders: Details Match Number- 49 Date: 29th October 2020, at 7:30 PM IST, 06:00 PM Local, 2.00 PM GMT Venue: Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai Broadcast: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch Report The pitch in Dubai seems to be helping spinners at least in the first innings with a bit of grip and the ball sticking into the wicket. In the second innings it flattens out and the dew helps it in the cause. After so many matches, it is natural that there would be wear and tear in the ground and that is getting reflected in the matches in terms of slow wickets with the tournament coming near to its end. Weather and Toss The weather always seems to be fine for cricket in Dubai. The evenings are a bit chilly as the humidity has gone out and the dew is the new feature in the game. With dew helping the chasing team and spinners getting help in the first innings, it is quite normal that a captain winning the toss would like to bowl first over here. Team News Chennai Super Kings As evident from captain Dhoni’s response in the last game, he was happy with the way his team batted. The bowling department also looked slick. In such a situation, no change looks like the way to go for CSK until sand unless some unfortunate injury happens. Expected XI Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, N Jagadeesan, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir, Monu Kumar Kolkata Knight Riders The Knight Riders have experimented a lot with their team combinations in the entire tournament. What they are lacking right now is a proper all-rounder since Andre Russell is not only injured but out of form too. In such a situation, Brandon McCullum and Morgan need to decide whether the six bowler policy needs a re-look or not. They need to play a specialist batsman at number-6, maybe Rinku Singh, and then play either Prasidh Krishna or Kamlesh Nagarkoti, if Shivam Mavi is not fit. Expected XI Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rinku Singh, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Lockey Ferguson, Kamlesh Nagarkoti/ Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders Dream 11 and team suggestions Shubman Gill (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan, MS Dhoni (wk), Sam Curran, Sunil Narine, Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Varun Chakravarthy, Imran Tahir Captain: Sam Curran Vice-captain: Shubman Gill

Manjrekar & Bhogle can't think beyond Bombay - Srikkanth defends KL Rahul's Test recall

Former chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanth has slammed Sanjay Manjrekar for questioning KL Rahul’s inclusion in the Test squad, stating that Manjrekar can’t think beyond Bombay. Srikkanth, who played 43 Test matches and 146 ODIs for India, called Manjrekar’s views ‘rubbish’. "Leave Sanjay Manjrekar alone, he doesn't have any other job," Srikkanth said in his YouTube channel Cheeky Cheeka. "Questioning KL Rahul's selection in Tests? He has played well in Tests. I won't agree at all. Just because Sanjay wants to question something, I don't think I'll agree. You shouldn't question something just to create a controversy. KL Rahul has done brilliantly in all formats. Go through his Test record. Rahul hasn’t clicked in Test cricket over the past couple of years. The elegant batter in white-ball format hasn’t hit a fifty in his last 12 innings in Tests. Barring a 149 in a dead-rubber contest - the fifth Test against England at The Oval in 2018, Rahul has averaged 22.23 in 27 Test innings since the start of 2018. Anirudha, Srikkanth’s son and host of the show pointed out that Manjrekar’s analysis isn’t too illogical as Rahul was dropped from Tests due to poor form for the home season last year. Srikkanth opined that the Karnataka cricketer is a good player of fast bowling and that Rahul has hit a hundred in Australia. "He might have been inconsistent but the same KL Rahul made his debut in Australia and made a century. He's a good player of fast bowling. Let's understand, he's a very good player of fast bowling," he said. "Sanjay Manjrekar cannot think beyond Bombay. That's the problem. We are talking neutral. Manjrekar cannot think beyond Bombay. For people like Manjrekar, everything is Bombay, Bombay and Bombay. They have to think beyond Bombay." Srikkanth also went on to say that commentator Harsha Bhogle isn’t neutral in his views and that he is biased towards Bombay cricketers. The 60-year-old said he is talking about Surya Kumar Yadav’s inclusion in the limited-overs squad instead of fighting over Dinesh Karthik and Ravi Ashwin’s snub.
