Debutant Harshal Patel continued his form from the Indian Premier League as he picked up 2 wickets on his debut game in Ranchi on Friday, 19 November.
Starting to bowl outside the powerplay, Harshal Patel used his slower deliveries with the dew affecting the larger part of the first innings. He picked up his first wicket in the second over by outfoxing Daryl Mitchell with a slower ball. The mishit went straight to the long-on fielder who took a comfortable catch to put pressure on the NZ batting line-up. His variations troubled the batsmen which allowed him to pick another wicket of Glenn Phillips in the 17th over.
He finished with figures of 4-0-25-2 that included 13 deliveries, impressive considering he bowled three of his overs in the back end of the innings (12, 17, 19).
After the initial onslaught by the openers, India pulled the game back with great spells from Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshal Patel. Patel was the pick of the bowlers clinching 2 wickets, while the rest of the bowlers picked one wicket each.
