Expensive Riley Meredith eyeing experience playing with KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami & Chris Jordan

Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith is looking forward to learning from the likes of Mohammed Shami and Chris Jordan. Picked up by the Punjab Kings for the raw pace he offers to the team that already is rich with the presence of Mohammed Shami and Chris Jordan in the mix, Meredith, in an interview with ANI stated that he is waiting to pick the brains of top international stars.

The Kings team management went for Meredith’s express pace and control in pursuit of strengthening their bowling line up after suffering blows one after another due to poor bowling last season.

Meredith was bought for Rs 8 crore and it raised many eyebrows as Kings also bought the services of his compatriot Jhye Richardson, who has a similar skill set to offer.

The move was a clear intent of having an aggressive bowling line up from the Kings and Meredith has arrived to provide much-needed firepower to the team in the 14th edition of the IPL.

But, Meredith is not unaware of the qualities of seasoned pros in Mohammed Shami and Chris Jordan. The Australian pacer spoke highly of Shami’s versatility as a bowler who could perform various roles in a particular match while the ability to bowl particularly well in the last overs of the game has been the main point of reckoning for Jordan in Meredith’s eyes.

"Obviously, Mohammed Shami is an unbelievable bowler, not just international wise, last few IPLs, he has been unbelievable and he has been taking lots of wickets. The best part of his game is that he can do the job at any point be it the start or at the death overs or during the middle. It is probably something everyone wants to do and I will try to pick his brains and learn,” Meredith told ANI.

“Jordan is probably one of the better death-over bowler going around at the moment in franchise cricket. The fact that he has been able to do it all over the world across different competitions speaks about how good he is. I will definitely try to tap into what he does and hopefully, I can add a few tricks to my game.”

Meredith is currently undergoing quarantine after arriving in India for the first time to play in IPL and he is eager to meet his skipper at the Punjab Kings KL Rahul, whom he rated a ‘huge figure’ in international cricket.

"KL Rahul is a huge figure in cricket, not just in Indian cricket, but the world cricket. Pretty much a rockstar really. It would be interesting to get to know him a little better and see how he operates. I haven't had too many interactions with him yet, just a few messages. I would be out of quarantine soon, so I look forward to meeting him,” the 24-year old added.

Meredith will have to rise through the ranks to get a place in the Punjab Kings playing XI despite a lot of promise. Or else, KL Rahul and Anil Kumble can bring him in the mix for the X-factor he can bring with his pace.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, Sean Williams nominated for ICC Men's Player of the Month

India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Zimbabwe’s Test captain Sean Williams and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan have been nominated for the ICC Player of the Month Award for the month of March. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been nominated after his excellent performances with the ball in the white-ball leg of the home series against England. He swung the new ball brilliantly against England openers while used his variations to come at the top of other batsmen. He picked up six wickets in the three-match long ODI series at 22.5 apiece while the five-match T20I series yielded four wickets at an average of only 28.7 runs per wicket. Sean Williams, on the other hand, was prolific with the bat in the two-match Test series against Afghanistan in the UAE. He piled on two centuries and amassed 264 Test runs at an astounding average of 132 runs per innings. He was the main man for Zimbabwe in the second Test but could not lead his side to an unlikely win over a bowling line up led by Rashid Khan who bowled a marathon spell of almost 100 overs in the Test match. He missed the first Test due to injury and Zimbabwe trounced Afghanistan to take an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the series. Rashid came back with a bang and won Afghanistan the game almost single-handedly from the jaws of defeat against Sean Williams-led Zimbabwean batting side. He picked 11 wickets in the only Test he featured. Following the Test series, Rashid scalped 6 wickets in a three-match long T20I series at a surreal average of 12.6 runs per wicket. Notably, the ICC has started the Player of the Month on monthly basis from the start of this year.

IPL 2021: Now a Knight Rider, Sandeep Warrier recalls Virat Kohli's role in his IPL journey

Sandeep Warrier was one of the emerging pacers during the 2012-13 edition of the Ranji Trophy when the big opportunity of the Indian Premier League came knocking his door. The offer came directly from the recommendation of Virat Kohli—who was rising with every game and were to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next edition of the league in 2013. Looking back at his IPL journey, Warrier recalls how he received a call from the Royal Challengers Bangalore management right after he bowled against Indian batsmen such as Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. “When I came back from the Ranji trophy, MA Satish sir was the manager of the Indian team that time and India had a One Day match against England in Kochi. He asked me whether I can come to bowl in the nets in Kochi. I went to bowl in the nets. I bowled to Rohit bhai (Rohit Sharma) and Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). So, that’s how Virat saw me that time he told RCB management that day itself and I got the call from Avinash sir (AvinashVaidya, RCB team manager), that we are interested in signing you,” Warrier recalls his journey to the cash-rich league in a video posted by KKR on its YouTube channel. He recalls that Virat Kohli did not bat against him in the nets before an ODI against England in 2013, but his exploits against other batsmen were good enough for him to recommend his name to the RCB management. Warrier was only 21-year-old in 2013 when RCB handed him a contract for one year. However, he could not feature in their playing XI and had to wait for a long time to make his debut that came only in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League. Warrier is a vital cog for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming edition of the IPL starting April 9 as he forms a formidable group of Indian pacers who will partner Pat Cummins to dismantle opposition batting line ups.
