Eoin Morgan to announce international retirement soon: Reports

Eoin Morgan has taken England's white-ball cricket to newer heights since taking over the reins in 2015. However, Morgan, who won the 50-overs World Cup for England in 2019, and guided his side to the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup, is now contemplating retiring from the game.

A report in The Guardian suggests that Morgan could bid goodbye to the game given his fitness issues and poor form.

In the recently concluded ODI series against the Netherlands, Morgan suffered two back-to-back ducks before missing the final match of the series due to an injury.

Wicket-keeper Jos Buttler and all-rounder Moeen Ali are the two front-runners to take up the post of England's white-ball captaincy if Morgan decides to call time on his career.

Buttler has led England in nine ODIs and five T20Is, while Moeen is yet to don the skipper's hat.

The 35-year-old Morgan has led England in 126 games, winning 76, and losing 40, while two matches have ended in ties, and eight have yielded no results.

Morgan has been backed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and his teammates, but his recent interviews have indicated his future lies away from the side.

Ahead of the Netherlands series, Morgan said, "If I don't think I am good enough or I don't feel I am contributing to the team, then I will finish."

The Irish-born took over the captaincy from Alastair Cook after England's disastrous 2015 World Cup campaign in Australia.

Morgan has scored 7,700 + runs in 248 ODIs with 14 centuries and under 2,500 runs in T20Is from 116 games.

His next limited-overs assignment will be against India, where both teams will feature in a 3-ODI and 3-T20I series starting July 7.

England will then compete in a series against the visiting South African side, who will also play as many ODIs and T20Is as India.
