Virat Kohli stepped down as the Test captain after India’s three-match series against South Africa away from home. The visitors suffered a 1-2 defeat in the series.

The Men in Blue will now battle it out against the Proteas in a three-match ODI fixtures and the side will be led by KL Rahul as Rohit Sharma who was earlier appointed as the limited-overs skipper after Kohli’s resignation from the post was ruled out of the tour due to injury.

Rahul’s deputy will be pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming three matches. Talking about Kohli’s decision, Bumrah has said that the players respect whatever the right-handed batsman has decided and also added that the side had enjoyed playing under him.

“It’s his decision. He knows his body. He knows his frame of mind. We respect that. It’s been a pleasure to play under his captaincy. I made my debut under him,” Bumrah said in the pre-ODIs press conference.

“He brought in energy. He brought in the fitness culture. He was driven. Everybody moved in one direction under his leadership. He has been immense and he will still be immense with his inputs,” he added.

“It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team to the right direction. I’ve done my job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now,” Kohli had said in a lengthy social media post.

Rohit Sharma aiming to make a comeback against West Indies in February

After a hamstring injury ruled him out of the South Africa tour, Rohit Sharma, is aiming to make a comeback in the home series against West Indies. Scheduled to start from February 6 in Ahmedabad, the six-match white ball series is already under scrutiny due to the Covid-19 situation in India. The Board for Control of Cricket in India has already considered isolating the series to fewer venues than originally proposed, but nothing concrete has been done yet. Sharma had earlier pulled his left hamstring right ahead of the South Africa tour and got ruled out from the entire tour. Since taking captaincy, he has won against New Zealand in India and it is expected that he will start strong against the new-look Windies team as well. "Rohit's rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy is going pretty well. He is expected to be okay for the West Indies series. It's still close to three weeks from now before the first ODI is played in Ahmedabad from February 6," PTI quoted an unnamed official under the conditions of anonymity.

BBL 11 | Aggressive Adelaide Strikers qualify for finals after all-round performance

Adelaide Strikers defeat Sydney Sixers by eight wickets on Monday 17 January at their home ground Oval. They earned full points to qualify for the finals action and now stand at the fourth spot in the league table with 28 points from 14 games. Chasing a decent total of 162 runs, Strikers were never put in a spot of bother owing to two standout performances of Matt Renshaw and Ian Cockbain who scored 50 off 31 and 71 off 42 balls respectively to win the game with 15 balls remaining. Opener Renshaw was lucky to survive a string of edges early on but then capitalise on the save to score a quick 50, to take Sixers out of the game. The visiting team would have thought that they could get the game in control after Renshwa’s departure, but they were dealt another blow in the form of Ian Cockbain. Cockbain, who joined the Strikers on 13 January, belted the Sixers out of play, punishing them all over the ground. The English recruit raked up his first half century for the franchise with exuberant strokes over all parts of the ground. This innings would put a lot of faith in the abilities of the right hander, after he played a grafters role on debut, seeing the game through and earning Strikers’ valuable points in his first game. Earlier in the day, Fawad Ahmed and Peter Siddle made sure that they cut Sixers’ wings whenever they had a bit of momentum by picking up wickets in a bunch. Sixers were in the game till the 13th over of their first innings, before the leggie picked up two wickets in two balls. He removed a well set Jack Edwards for 34 and in the very next ball dismissed Daniel Hughes. However, a tremendous attacking innings from Justin Avendano turned the tides for Sixers as he notched up 52 off 29 balls. The scoreboard would have surely looked a little worse if it weren’t for Peter Siddle’s back to back wickets in the final over the game. He removed Avendano and Sean Abbot in the fourth and the fifth ball of the over to limit damage. The final game of the group stage for the Strikers marks a tremendous overhaul to their campaign winning four out of their four remaining games to get into the finals.

Former India U19 skipper Unmukt Chand likely to make BBL debut for Melbourne Renegades

Former India U19 captain Unmukt Chand is in line to make his BBL debut as the right-handed batter has been roped in the squad for the clash against Hobart Hurricanes. The Renegades have made four changes in the side after Mackenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk have returned positive COVID-19 tests and have been isolated. Apart from these two, captain Nic Maddinson has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury and Aaron Finch will be taking up the skipper’s role. Kane Richardson has also returned home due to family reasons. “Former India A and India U19 captain Unmukt Chand has been added to the squad, with Zak Evans, Mitch Perry and James Seymour all returning,” Renegades said in a statement. “In the absence of Maddinson and Richardson, former skipper Aaron Finch will lead the team,” the statement added. Chand had made headlines after he led India to their U19 World Cup winning triumph back in 2012 but failed to make a cut in the senior team. The right-hander hung his boots from Indian cricket in August last year. Joe Root to skip IPL in ultimate sacrifice for Test team

England Test captain Joe Root has all but confirmed that he will not be a part of the Indian Premier League mega-auctions. One of the best batters of the modern generation, Root has not been a part of the cash-rich league even once in his career. In all probability, what could be the final mega auction of the league, this could have been Root’s best chance to enter a franchise. However, the chances look grim with Root stating that he will be sacrificing as much as he can to rebuild the English Test team. His comments come after England’s drubbing of four-nil in the Ashes series where England were bested in all departments. “I’ll keep sacrificing as much as I can because I care so much about Test cricket in our country and trying to get us to where we want to be,” Root said, effectively turning down the proposition to join IPL. Massive amounts of criticism have been chucked towards the national team for their impatience in the middle and Root has had to face some chin music from the Australian media about his meek captaincy. “There’s a lot that we need to do for this team, which deserves all of my energy,” Root told the media in the post-match press conference.
