England Deaf side lifts maiden Ashes Title

The England Deaf cricket team has created history by winning the prestigious Ashes for the first time. The series consisted of 5-T20 fixtures and 3-match ODI series.

The all-rounder James Schofield was the best performer for the team. In the first half, he picked a total of four wickets, with two coming in his first over. After that, the Aussie side were dismissed for a score of 129.

Schofield (63) and Vmesh Valjee (45) were the key contributors for England as they completely outplayed their opponents. Their partnership helped the team chase down the score in 22.1 overs and achieve this unique feat.

Schofield reckoned that he was happy to contribute in the last few matches of the series.

"It was a pretty special day – it's great to be involved after the stress of watching a lot of it on TV," said Schofield, whose first Ashes tour was in 2011. "I'm just pleased I've been able to contribute in the last couple of games," said Schofield.

The all-rounder added that hard work, dedication, and responsibility of the players have paved the way for the team to win the Ashes.

"It's reward for a lot of hard work and dedication from everybody on and off the pitch – and people have taken responsibility on the day to see the job home. They're a competitive side and have given us some tricky moments – it's been a really good series and a great advert for deaf cricket.

English Skipper Greenway was ecstatic to win The Ashes and thanked the support staff for taking care of them through the covid pandemic.

"I'm so proud of all the players and so thankful to all the support staff who've really looked after us, especially through Covid," he said. "It's a huge team effort and a massive achievement for us. A few of us are quite emotional."

The England team took a lead of 5-2 in the series, with a single game still left to be played.
