England announce squads for ODI & T20I series against South Africa

England and Wales Cricket Board, on Friday, announced the men's squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against South Africa.


The Jos Buttler-led unit will lock horns with the visiting Proteas in three 50-over games and three Twenty20 Internationals between July 19-31.


The selection panel has named a 15-man squad for the 50-over rubber, which will be a part of the ongoing ODI Super League.


Durham seamer Matthew Potts has earned a maiden ODI call-up following impressive performances in the Test summer against New Zealand and India. 


Leg-spinner Adil Rashid also returns to the squad after missing out on the Indian series. Young batter Harry Brook, who is a part of the ODI squad against India, has been overlooked.

Ben Stokes rested for T20I series; Bairstow returns 

Meanwhile, the selectors have decided to rest red-ball skipper Ben Stokes from the T20I series as part of their workload management program.

Stokes did not feature in the recent T20I series against India and he is also scheduled to miss the Hundred competition this year.


On the other hand, Jonny Bairstow, who also did not feature in the India T20I series, returns to the English T20I lineup.

England will take on South Africa in three one-dayers between July 19-24 at Chester-le-Street, Manchester and Leeds respectively.


The T20I rubber will take place at Bristol, Cardiff and Southampton on July 27, 28 & 31 respectively.

On Friday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released Yorkshire's Harry Brook and Lancashire duo of Matt Parkinson and Phil Salt for the Vitality T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston on Saturday. ECB have permitted the trio to link up with their respective counties ahead of Saturday's T20 Blast final in Birmingham. "The trio will travel to Edgbaston today to join their respective counties before returning to the England squad ahead of the third Royal London International at Emirates Old Trafford on Sunday," the ECB stated. Brook has smashed 434 runs at an average of 43.40 for Yorkshire. Salt has struck 344 runs at an average of 28.66 for Lancashire, while leg-spinner Parkinson has claimed eight wickets in ten appearances. Among these players, only Salt was released earlier to participate in the T20 Blast quarter-final. The semi-finals and final of the T20 Blast 2022 are all staged on the same day. Yorkshire and Lancashire will face off in the opening semi-final, the first Roses match in Finals Day history, before Somerset takes on Hampshire. Hired Matthew Mott after suspecting Eoin Morgan would retire, says ECB Director Rob Key

Since former England player Robert Key took charge of affairs for England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), ‘The Three Lions’ have been on a high. Key, who is the ECB's Managing Director for Men's Cricket, headed the appointment of Brendon McCullum and Matthew Mott as England's head coaches for the red-and-white ball formats, respectively. These decisions have yielded remarkable results thus far. The former England batter has now revealed why Mott was chosen for the post, which at the time looked like a hasty decision. Why Mott was the perfect choice for England…. Speaking to The Guardian, Key said that with Eoin Morgan's impending retirement looming over English cricket, Mott seemed like the perfect guy to usher the team into a new era. "One of the reasons I wanted someone with experience was in case Eoin Morgan gave it up. When I came in, he (Morgan) pretty much ran the entire setup. He never guaranteed, 'I will definitely be there for the World Cup', and that became part of the decision-making process. This team really ran itself with Eoin Morgan. What's the best way to do it when he's not there? That's why Matthew Mott. I wasn't expecting this, but it was part of the thinking," Key added. Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket last month after serving as captain of the white-ball side since 2015. Key came into cricket administration after England suffered series losses to Australia and West Indies, under Chris Silverwood's coaching and Joe Root's captaincy. Can they play white-ball?: Key The 43-year-old cricketer-turned-administrator also spoke about the problems within England's setup, pertaining to injuries to key bowlers (Jofra Archer and Mark Wood). He said, "The ones (where) it becomes an issue are Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, your fast bowlers. The problem will come if they are all fit, then you've got a decision to make - can they play every Test match? Can they play every white-ball game? But at the moment none of them are fit." Hopeful he will be involved in everything: Key Key remains hopeful of Archer playing in all formats for England despite his run-ins with injuries that have kept him out of action for over a year. "I'm hopeful he will be involved in everything. Unless someone who knows a lot more about backs and injuries (tells me otherwise), I will not change my view on that," concluded the former Sky Sports commentator.
