ENG vs SA | Andile Phehlukwayo ruled out of ODI series with concussion

South African all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been ruled out of the ongoing three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against England

Phehlukwayo sustained a concussion after colliding with skipper Keshav Maharaj while fielding in the first ODI in Durham on Tuesday.

South Africa’s team doctor, Hashendra Ramjee has confirmed that the 26-year-old will be heading into rehabilitation.

In a statement released by Cricket South Africa, Ramjee said, “Following his concussion, Andile has been monitored closely and has shown signs of improvement. He will now commence his concussion return to play rehabilitation program.”

How the injury occurred

Phehlukwayo running in from mid-off, collided with Maharaj, who came rushing in from mid-on.

Both players bumped into each other while attempting to cut off the ball, which resulted in Phehlukwayo having his face slammed into Maharaj's shoulder.

He was then attended to by the physio and taken off.

Story of the first ODI

Maharaj-led South Africa routed Jos Buttler-led England in the opening match at Chester-le-Street by 62 runs.

Rassie van der Dussen blitzed a 117-ball 134, that saw the visitors post a mammoth total of 333 for 5 in 50 overs. Opener Janneman Malan also contributed 57 runs.

In reply, England started strongly with their top three scoring heavily. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root notched up half-centuries but soon suffered a middle-order collapse, leading to them folding for 271.

Anrich Nortje started with the ball, picking up four wickets. Tabraiz Shamsi and Aiden Markram picked up two wickets apiece. Phehlukwayo bowled just three overs.

The second ODI will take place on Friday (July 22) in Manchester.
