ENG vs IND | Johnny Bairstow and Joe Root shatter records after unbeaten stand

In an exciting summer of English cricket, records have been shattered in the game's longest format. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root registered tons to help England chase down a steep total of 378 runs in the fifth Test against India. Not only did the hosts register their highest successful chase in red-ball cricket, but Root-Bairstow also reached a milestone.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put on an unbeaten stand of 269 runs for the fourth wicket, making huge inroads into the Indian bowling attack. For the first time in Test cricket history, both centurions were unbeaten at the end of a successful chase. Root scored 142*, whereas Bairstow smashed his fourth ton this summer, remaining unbeaten on 114.

After an ideal start to the chase, England lost three quick wickets for just two runs. At that moment, England could not have asked for a better combination than Root-Bairstow to be out there in the middle.

The in-form duo found the fence regularly and made the chase a walk in the park. They did not let anything away and kept putting the loose balls away for a boundary.

Jonny Bairstow was awarded the Player of the Match for twin hundreds. The English batter scored 106 runs in the first innings, which helped England reduce the first innings deficit. Bairstow now has six hundred in the last 8 Test matches and is simply looking unstoppable at the moment.

Meanwhile, Joe Root was awarded the Player of the Series Award. He scored 737 runs in nine innings at an average of 105.28, with four centuries and one half-century. In the current WTC cycle, Root averages 64.59, with 1744 runs to his name.
