ENG vs IND | 2nd ODI | Preview, Prediction, Probable XI, CREX XI

The 2nd ODI of the three-match series between England and India will take place at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Thursday, July 14.

India pulled off a perfect performance in the opening game at the Oval as a masterclass in seam and swing bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami and a whirlwind unbeaten 76 from skipper Rohit Sharma consigned the hosts to a crushing 10-wicket defeat.

Like the first two T20Is, the Indian dealers exploited the movement on offer and ran past the famed English batting order, with as many as four players registering a duck.

The lack of wickets in the powerplay has been a nemesis for Team India in this format since the 2019 World Cup. Since that event, no side has had the worst average and strike rate in the powerplay than the Men in Blue, and we saw on Tuesday what a difference early wickets make.

India took an aggressive route at the Oval as they went with a genuine seamer in Prasidh Krishna instead of an all-rounder in Shardul. The move paid dividends as Rohit exerted constant pressure on the English batters.

With the bat, Rohit looked as imperious as ever while Dhawan, initially scratchy, eventually found his touch as his innings wore on. However, India are unlikely to go with any changes for the Lord's as they won't want to take a chance with Virat Kohli's fitness given the short turnaround in games.

As for hosts England, their batters would be gunning to avenge the humiliation they suffered in the previous game with a power-packed performance.

For that, they will hope that Jason Roy, who has looked woeful so far, and Jonny Bairstow get them off to a decent start to allow the rest of the batters a breathing space.

England have lost the ODI series to Australia and India since the last WC, while India too have lost to New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa in recent times. Both sides will look to claim the bragging rights in the next couple of ODIs.

Pitch Report:

Like we saw in the 2019 World Cup at Lord's, if there is a greenish tinge on the surface, then the fast bowlers will come into the game big time. The current batch of Kookaburra has swung and seamed noticeably early this summer, and once again, it will provide a stern test to the opening batters.

The average 1st innings score in 70 matches is 238, and teams batting first have won on 33 occasions.
