England dealt with an injury blow on the third morning of the ongoing Leeds Test after regular wicketkeeper Ben Foakes reported stiffness in his back.
In-form batsman Jonny Bairstow filled in for the Surrey cricketer at the start of New Zealand's second innings.
This was of course after Bairstow played an innings of his life - a brutal, disdainful 157-ball 162- and, along with debutant Jamie Overton lifted the home side from a precarious position of 6-55 to 360 all-out.
The Bradford-born added a record 241 runs for the 7th wicket with Overton in a stunning display of counter-attacking batsmanship.
It was a typical Bairstow innings where he cut, dabbed and drove the New Zealand attack into total submission. He got to his 10th Test hundred and 4th of the calendar year in just 95 deliveries, courtesy of a ferocious straight drive off Tim Southee.
The 32-year-old enjoyed tremendous support from debutant pacer Overton, who looked in total control for a significant part of his knock.
He survived an LBW call from Neil Wagner earlier in his innings but barring that, it was an innings full of eye-catching strokeplay.
The 28-year-old fell short of his maiden ton on debut, courtesy of Trent Boult, who dismissed him on the 3rd morning when he was on 97.
England were eventually bowled out for 360, and in response, New Zealand lost opener Will Young cheaply to Matthew Potts.
At one stage, the Kiwis were 43/1 in the 15th over, with an overall lead of 12. After a 97 runs partnership from Kane Williamson and Tom Latham for the 2nd wicket, the Kiwi middle-order wrecked and are struggling at 168-5 on Stumps, Day-3.
