Derbyshire sign Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright as cover for Shan Masood

As cover for Shan Masood who has flown back to Pakistan to play international cricket Derbyshire have signed Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright for one month. Cartwright will join the team ahead of their tour match against India beginning on 1 July and will also be available for the remainder of the Vitality Blast competition.

Cartwright brings with him quite a lot of domestic cricket experience. He has previously played county cricket for Middlesex in 2018 and has also played for Western Australia.

The 30-year-old has 1,500 T20 runs at an average of 29, including seven half-centuries. In first-class cricket, Cartwright has over 3,500 runs at an average of 36, including seven centuries. He has also been picked by Oval Invincibles for the upcoming edition of The Hundred. Cartwright is also a handy bowler who has 70 wickets in his domestic career.

Derbyshire’s website quoted Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, as saying:

“Following Shan’s call-up to the Pakistan Test squad for their series next month, we wanted to act quickly to bring in international-quality cover and Hilton will do just that. He’s a very talented cricketer and his Sheffield Shield record is one of the best for an all-rounder in Australian cricket right now. He’ll come straight into the mix this week and I’m looking forward to working with him during what is a key part of the season for us.”

Cartwright, meanwhile, is excited about working with one of the best coaches in the world and is hoping to make vital contributions to Derbyshire’s remaining games this season.

“This is a great opportunity for me to test myself in the English domestic game again and work with one of the best coaches in the world. The Club’s had a great start to the season and as it’s getting to a crucial stage of the summer, I’m hoping to contribute with bat and ball to keep the momentum going that the lads have created.”
