Deepak Hooda opens up on intention to emulate IPL performance on Ireland tour

Not long ago, Deepak Hooda was among the candidates to have an outside chance of making it to the Indian T20I World Cup. However, the situation has completely reversed in the last three months after the 27-year-old's emphatic performances in IPL 2022 and the Ireland series. As a result, he could now be among the prime candidates to feature in the Indian squad for the marquee event in Australia.

Deepak Hooda became only the fourth Indian batter to register a T20I ton after his 104 off 57 balls against Ireland in the second T20I. The all-rounder tonked the ball around the park, showing exactly what he is capable of producing on the big stage. Hooda was adjudged the player of the match and player of the series for scoring 151 runs in the two-match T20I series.

Hooda has credited his IPL form for his stellar performance against Ireland. He revealed that he wanted to build on his IPL 2022 credentials and was delighted to be promoted to the top of the order.

Deepak Hooda said: "To be honest, I was coming from a good IPL and wanted to follow the same performance. Happy with my intent. I like playing in that manner (aggressive) and these days I am batting up the order so getting some time."

In the recently concluded IPL, Deepak Hooda starred with the bat for Lucknow Super Giants. He scored 450 odd runs and was a crucial part of LSG's road to the playoffs.

Sanju Samson was Hooda's partner in crime, with his 77 off just 42 balls. The duo put on a 176-run stand for the second wicket before Mark Adair cleaned up Samson. Deepak Hooda reflected on batting alongside his long-time friend and also thanked the fans for their support.

"Sanju is my childhood friend, always good to bat with him. Thank you to fans, the way they came and supported us," Hooda added.

Hooda's recent exploits against Ireland should earn him a spot in the squad for the England series. The squad will be announced soon, with the three T20Is commencing from July 7.
