CSA set to earn big through franchise auction for new T20 league

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is set to launch a franchise-based T20 league of its own. As many as six sides will be taking part in the proposed league. Remarkably, all six franchises have ownership roots with the Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners.

As per a recent report by Cricbuzz, the South Africa board is set to earn more than USD 150 million (for 10 years) from the franchise auction of its forthcoming league. While the CSA has not yet revealed the value of their six franchises, the report understands that teams based from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town will approximately value USD 10 million.

Moreover, the remaining three teams from Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Paarl will account for USD 5 million.

CSA T20 league to be led by Graeme Smith

Earlier this week, former South African captain Graeme Smith was announced as the head of CSA’s T20 league. 

After the announcement, he said: “I’m deeply committed to South African cricket and happy to serve the game as best I can. I’m excited by the opportunity to deliver the new league, which I believe will be an extremely competitive product, one that can bring the much-needed investment into the game and provide new opportunities for players around the world and more importantly to our SA home grown talent."

Reports: Injured Ravindra Jadeja likely to be rested for West Indies ODIs

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies due to a suspected knee injury. According to reports, the star cricketer has a niggle in his left knee and medical advice is being sought to determine the extent of the injury. The ODI series will kick off on Friday (July 22) and all three games will be played at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad. Cricbuzz reports that Jadeja could be rested for the ODIs to give the southpaw enough time to recover before the T20I leg of the tour starts. The five-match series will take place between July 29-August 7 in the Caribbean and USA. If ruled out, then India will have to name a new vice-captain. Star wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal could become the likely beneficiary. Selection conundrum in plenty for Dhawan & Dravid With 'Jaddu' ruled out, it will be interesting to see what kind of combination the Indian management goes with. Also, with Hardik Pandya unavailable and Jadeja too unlikely to feature, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel will likely come in as like-for-like replacements. In their absence, the onus will be on the top-6 to spearhead the batting. That said, West Indies' batter's issues against left-arm spin are well documented and Axar could pose a massive threat if the wicket turns out to be slow and sluggish. It will also be interesting to see who opens the innings with Dhawan. There are three contenders in Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, with the stumper likely to get a nod. Then there is a case for middle-order spots. Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav will likely start at three & four, while Sanju Samson and Deepak Hooda could slot in at five & six, followed by 'all-rounders'- Shardul and Axar. Chahal will lead the spin department, while Mohammed Siraj will partner with one of Prasidh Krishna or Avesh Khan as specialist pacers. Ahead of the 2nd and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka on Sunday, Pakistan received unwelcoming news in the form of Shaheen Shah Afridi's injury. The left-arm paceman has been ruled out of the upcoming Galle Test due to a knee injury he suffered on Day 4 of the 1st Test, which Pakistan won by four wickets against Sri Lanka chasing 342. As reported by Espncricinfo, Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) statement stated: "Due to a knee injury sustained on the fourth day of the first Test, Shaheen Afridi will miss the second Test, which will be played in Galle from July 24." Afridi claimed four crucial wickets in Sri Lanka's first innings, which helped his side bundle the hosts for 222. His wickets include Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, and Maheesh Theekshana. Ranked number four in the ICC Test Rankings for bowlers, Afridi managed just seven overs in the fourth innings for Pakistan. Afridi is just one wicket away from 100 Test scalps. Speedster Haris Rauf is likely to replace him in the playing XI. Changes in the Sri Lankan squad Theekshana, who suffered a finger injury while bowling on Day 4 of the first Test, has been released from the squad. 22-year-old Lakshitha Manasinghe has received his maiden Test call-up after picking up a five-wicket haul against the visiting Australia' A' side last month.
