A total of three County Championship Division One matches got underway on 12 September. Let's have a sneak peek into the exciting action, which transpired on Monday at Leeds, Birmingham and Northampton. 

Yorkshire vs Essex

In overcast conditions at Leeds, Essex chose to bowl first. The in-form Sam Cook dismissed Finlay Bean (0). Soon the experienced campaigner Adam Lyth (13) was sent back to the hut by Jamie Porter.


Proficient Cook induced the edge of George Hill (36), who tried to resurrect the innings. In the middle, wicket-keeper Jonathan Tattersall (32) displayed fighting spirit but was cleaned up by Shane Snater.

At the end of Day's play, Yorkshire was bundled out for 134.

Warwickshire vs Somerset

Somerset's decision to bat first backfired as they lost their key players Imam Ul Haq (5) and Tom Abell (1) early. Soon, they were rocked by another three wickets in a space of a few balls, courtesy of Jayant Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. 


Soon, they were stuttering at 82/7, when Josh Davey arrived to the crease. It was a prolific partnership of 58 runs between Lewis Gregory and Davey (21), which brought Somerset back to the match. 

Afterwards, spinner Sajid Khan has been terrific to remain unbeaten at 31, while Gregory is batting on 60*, with Somerset ending the Day on 182/8. In his maiden County Championship fixture, Siraj has already scalped four wickets.

Northamptonshire vs Surrey

Invited to bat first, Northamptonshire were off to a glorious start, with Emilio Gay at his imperious best. At the other end, he got a support from skipper Will Young (20). 


The experienced Kemar Roach took the wickets of Will Young (20) and Luke Procter (2) in quick succession. On the other hand, Daniel Worrall ended the short stay of Josh Cobb (1). 

Then, the talented all-rounder Rob Keogh stitched a superb stand, laced with exquisite strokeplay. The Day's play ended with the wicket of Gay (145), which is now his highest first-class score as well. 

At the end of Day 1, Northamptonshire are at 249/4. with Keogh at 75*.
