County Championship 2022 | Yorkshire gain bragging rights on opening day against Warwickshire

Captain Steven Patterson and Jordan Thompson claimed three wickets apiece for Yorkshire to dominate Warwickshire on the first day. At the end of the day’s play, Yorkshire were unscathed at 28/0, and they trail the visitors’ score by 216 runs.

Warwickshire were rocked early after deciding to bat first. Alex Davies (19) was the first to get dismissed, with the team’s score reading 28, with Jordan Thompson sending him back in the 11th over. The other opener, Dominic Sibley, followed suit in the next over, getting knocked over by Patterson.

The home side did not let Warwickshire get a grip on the game and achieve stability in their innings. Robert Yates and Sam Hain could not resurrect the innings as Warwickshire got reduced to 43/4 in no time.

Will Rhodes and Matthew Lamb stitched 74 runs for the fifth wicket. Lamb was the aggressor while Rhodes batted cautiously. Matthew Revis removed Lamb on 45, a knock that included six boundaries. Rhodes became Tom Loten’s first victim on 29, which came off 104 balls.

While the lower order and tail end wilted under pressure, Michael Burgess stood tall. His stunning innings saved the visitors from a complete embarrassment. Playing at a strike rate of over 90, Burgess was a class apart. He struck fourteen fours and a six during his stay in the middle.

The wicket-keeper batter fell agonisingly short of the three-figure mark. Patterson had him caught and bowled on 96 to claim his third wicket of the innings. He was the last wicket to fall as Warwickshire got bundled out for 244 in 81.4 overs.
