County Championship 2022 | Division One Round-up, July 20

The 2022 County Championship continued on Wednesday, July 20 with Day 2 of five Division One fixtures. Here is a look at the high points from each of those five matches.


Warwickshire vs Kent

Hosts Warwickshire added another 70 runs on Day 2, thus extending their first-innings total to 225. Sam Hain missed out on a well-deserved ton as he was dismissed by Matt Milnes for 99. Indian speedster Navdeep Saini claimed a five-fer for Kent while toiling away for 18 overs.

In response, the visitors wiped off their 60-run deficit by reaching 198-4 before stumps. Joe Denly (70*) and Jordan Cox (40*) will resume Kent’s second innings on Day 3 with a 138-run upper hand over the hosts.

Surrey vs Essex

Essex had hosts Surrey on the mat, reducing them to 112-7 at one stage. However, middle-order batsman Will Jacks led a rebellion with the lower-order, combining 50-plus stands with each of the three tail-enders.

Jacks himself remained unbeaten at 150, as his side claimed a handy 48-run lead over the visitors.

Late in the day, Essex lost two wickets in six overs, including that of seasoned opener and English legend Alastair Cook.

Somerset vs Yorkshire

Somerset stretched their overnight score to 424. However, captain Tom Abell managed only two to his 114* from Day 1. Dom Bess picked up four wickets in 29 overs and he was assisted by Matthew Waite’s three-fer.

Yorkshire batted out the remaining 45 overs of the day, reaching 167 off the back of Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s unbeaten 68.

Northamptonshire vs Lancashire

The Northamptonshire batters faced just 27 deliveries on Day 2 to lose their remaining three wickets. Lancashire’s Indian import Washington Sundar picked up 5-76 on his County Championship debut.

In response, the visitors conceded a massive 103-run first innings lead to Northamptonshire, as they were shot out for just 132. Jack White with his five-fer became the headline act as his side will now head into Day 3 with a 128-run overall lead.

Felix Organ’s 118 and captain James Vince’ 95 charged up Hampshire’s total to 457.

The Gloucestershire side, facing 16 overs late in the day, lost both their openers early. They will resume their first innings on Day 3, trailing the visitors by another 414 runs.
