County Championship 2022 Division II | Liam Trevaskis's 88 ensures Durham's survival against Sussex

It was a strong performance from the Sussex on the Day 1 of their Round 4 fixture against Durham at County Ground, Hove. On the other hand, the visitors will be remorseful after opting to bat first.

Henry Crocombe induced an edge in the 6th over of the innings off Alex Lees, which the wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan caught with ease.

Keegan Petersen stitched a partnership of 39 runs with Sean Dickson, which undoubtedly aided the team in getting a stable platform. However, the floodgates opened after Tom Clark took the wicket of Keegan Petersen (14).

In the space of 8 runs, the team lost four wickets, with the big wickets of the seasoned campaigners Borthwick and Bedingham. Among these, the defence of Dickson was finally breached by Clark, and the batter was sent packing.

Clark did the most damage, but the strong support from the likes of Aaron Beard and captain Tom Haines combined an excellent spell of bowling which shattered Durham.

At Lunch, Durham were stuttering at 79/6. Then, the all-rounder Liam Trevaskis stitched a 53-run stand with Ben Raine (23) and followed it up with a partnership of 87 with Matty Potts (26) to revive the team from trouble.

The last two batters, Matt Salisbury and Chris Rushworth, could not display a stable resistance, and the team was dismissed for a score of 223. The team's highest run-scorer was Trevaskis with 88, comprising 11 fours in his vital innings.

Aaron Beard and Tom Clark finished with three wickets each for Durham, and Mason Crane picked 2 in the 2nd session.

In response, the home team had a great start with Alistair Orr and Tom Haines putting up a quickfire 68-run stand before the latter was bowled off a peach of a delivery from Matty Potts for a score of 54 off 57 balls, with ten boundaries to his name.

At the end of the day, Sussex are at 82/1 with Orr (21*) and Crane (5*) at the crease and are trailing behind by 141 runs.
