'Couldn't turn down chance to lead Welsh Fire Women', says Tammy Beaumont

England's Tammy Beaumont, who played under Heather Knight for London Spirit in the inaugural season of The Hundred women's, is gearing up to lead the Welsh Fire in the second edition this year.

While the Spirit narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in 2021, Fire ended with a wooden spoon last year with six losses and two wins.

Beaumont, who will lead Fire against Birmingham Phoenix on Saturday, said that the opportunity to captain the side was a big thing for her, and she couldn't turn it down.

Beaumont on her captaincy role

"I know Welsh Fire's general manager Mark Wallace as he used to work at the [Professional Cricketers' Association]. He came up to me last season and said jokingly, 'come on, Tam, what will it take for you to play for us?' I said, as a joke, 'make me captain!'

"That was that for months but when the signing window came around he gave me a call and said, 'we want you as captain, what do you say?'

"I really enjoyed playing with London Spirit and under Heather but to take on a bit of leadership and maybe be part of building something at Welsh Fire was not something I could turn down. I have the opportunity to captain a team and test myself in a way that maybe I haven't done much over the last few years.

"I want to empower my players to take responsibility. I am hopefully not going to be barking orders too much." - Beaumont said to Sky Sports

More on Welsh Fire Women's side

Beaumont will have the likes of Australia's Rachael Haynes, Annabel Sutherland, Nicola Carey, and West Indies' Hayley Matthews in the squad.

They also have a new coach in Gareth Breese, who replaces the outgoing Matthew Mott.

The first match of The Hundred Women's begins on August 11, when defending champion Oval Invincibles face Northern Superchargers.
