Connell gets discharged from hospital, CWI says was taken just as precaution

The experienced Windies seamer Shamilia Connell, who collapsed on the field, is completely healthy and discharged from the hospital. This unfortunate incident occurred during West Indies’ face-off against Bangladesh in Mount Maunganui on Friday (March 18) in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup.

As per West Indies Cricket’s latest press release, the pacer was taken to the hospital just as a precaution and has cleared all the due tests.

“Connell was taken to the hospital as a precaution and all her tests returned clear results. She was discharged the same evening. She is now resting comfortably, under the care and supervision of the CWI Medical Team. She is in good spirits and thankful for all the well wishes,” stated the press release by CWI.

Connell was bowling the 47th over of Bangladesh’s chase when she suddenly collapsed. Her teammates immediately surrounded the pacer before the medical team rushed in to take Connell out of the playing arena.

Although the exact reason for the collapse is still unknown, she was seen getting up and climbing onto a waiting ambulance with her hands on her stomach.

Her teammates expressed their deep concerns following the unfortunate incident in the post-match presentation after the West Indies won the game by the barest of margins.

The skipper Stafanie Taylor hoped for her well-being and insisted her team should look at the brighter side that regrouped and eventually won the game after the incident.

"It was sad to see her go down, but we look at the bright side, it was probably for us to regroup and we did that and changed the momentum," said the skipper in the post-match presentation.

"Obviously a bit worrying to see her go down like that. She is a fighter, I am not sure what's wrong with her but she will be alright (sic). Bit worrying seeing her going down like that. She is a fighter, not sure what’s wrong with her but hopefully she is alright”, cited Hayley Matthews, who was adjourned the Player of the Match award.

Connell bowled three overs, conceding 15 runs and picking no wickets before she collapsed in the low-scoring thriller. The Windies are next scheduled to take on Pakistan at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on March 21.

ICC Women's CWC 2022 | Smriti Mandhana recollects good memories from 2021 Australia tour

After losing their last encounter against England, India's women's team is scheduled to face Australia, who are unbeaten in the ongoing World Cup in New Zealand. India's star opener Smriti Mandhana remembered her side's good performance in their last tour of Australia and aimed to emulate the same show in the upcoming World Cup match. The Blue Brigade gave a tough fight to Australia during the 2021 tour and came close to winning the ODI series, which the hosts clinched by 2-1. Also, India knocked Australia out of the 2017 Women's World Cup by winning the all-important semi-final clash. "Everyone knows what happened in 2017. But, more than that, we discussed our last tour of Australia. We have done well against them and we almost won the series. That's the brand of cricket we want to play and that has been our motivation," Mandhana commented in a virtual press conference. The upcoming game against Australia is a virtual knockout for India. They have already lost two games in the tournament and cannot afford another defeat in their journey to the semis. "The girls are really motivated and everyone is pumped to go and get 2 points on board, knowing the situation of the tournament and how important this match is. The team psychologist has also helped in this regard," she added. Further, Mandhana provided an update on Harmanpreet Kaur's fitness and informed that she is fit to play tomorrow. "She is fit and available for tomorrow's game," the flamboyant left-hander mentioned. The southpaw again took back to the 2021 Australia tour and discussed how closely the ODI series was fought. "Definitely we couldn't win the series. The second match also we almost won against them, so it would have been like a series win," Mandhana continued. The Sangli-born reflected on Jhulan Goswami's 200th ODI match and emphasised the value of the occasion. "It is a proud moment for all of us to be there for Jhulan di's 200th match. She has been motivating us and also all the girls back home," she concluded.

Pakistan-Australia white-ball series venue changed to Lahore from Rawalpindi

Political tension in the Islamabad circles has forced the PCB to change the venue of the upcoming ODI and T20I series from Rawalpindi to Lahore. Due to the prevailing scenario in Islamabad and adjoining areas, the white-ball series between Pakistan and Australia has now been moved to Lahore. Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan will face the no-confidence vote next week. It has led to a clash between his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Amid the political turmoil, both parties are expected to march towards Islamabad with a massive crowd supporting their respective motives. Rawalpindi, which neighbours Islamabad, was earlier scheduled to conduct Pakistan-Australia limited-over series. Still, as a precautionary measure, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will now host Australia in the white-ball leg of the tour. "T20I and ODI matches between Pakistan and Australia that were scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi will now be hosted in Lahore due to tense political situation in federal capital," Pakistan's interior minister Sheikh Rasheed updated as reported by The Nation. PTI had earlier announced that close to one million people will rally towards D-Chowk on March 27. The place is just two kilometres away from the hotel where both the teams were initially expected to stay. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Australia are involved in a three-match Test series, of which the final game remains. The caravan will then move to Lahore for three ODIs and a one-off T20I fixture.
