Matt Henry to replace Finn Allen for Bangladesh T20Is

New Zealand have called-up Matt Henry for the Bangladesh T20I series as a replacement for Finn Allen who had tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival in Dhaka. Henry was initially included in the squad that will play three ODIs and a five-match T20I series against Pakistan but will now join the side in Bangladesh as well. He will leave New Zealand on August 30. Though New Zealand have named the replacement for Allen, he will still stay with the squad and will be monitored by the team doctor Pat McHugh. "Matt's clearly not a like-for-like replacement for Finn, but he expands our selection options and, in the current circumstances, is the best equipped to join the side at such short notice," said head coach Gary Stead. "And, in the current environment, we remain mindful of the need to carefully balance player workloads," he added. "We're not prepared to risk anyone's well-being by asking them to commit to extremely long periods away from home." Henry has played 6 T20Is so far and has picked 7 wickets at an economy rate of 8.68. The T20I series between the two teams will be played between September 1 to September 10 in Dhaka. Bangladesh have been in some good form in the T20Is. They recently thumped Australia 4-1 at home.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were off to a flying start in the CPL 2021 after they etched a comprehensive 21-run win against Barbados Royals on Friday. Chasing 176 in 20 overs, the Royals were restricted to 154/7. Barbados didn’t really have a great start to the proceedings after Patriots scalped an early wicket in the form of Glenn Philips who was sent back in the hut for 5 while the team score read 17. The Barbados side then lost wickets at regular intervals and were left tottering at 67/4 when Shai Hope was joined by Azam Khan in the middle and the two players stitched a partnership of 37 runs for the fifth wicket. Hope was later undone by Cottrell after Fabian Allen took a good catch to send him back in the hut for 44. Azam did try to score some runs at a brisk pace but the Barbados team never really made a comeback in the game and suffered a defeat eventually. Dominic Drakes and Allen were the pick of the bowlers for Patriots in this encounter. Drakes returned with figures of 2/13 in four overs while Allen picked up one wicket at the cost of 12 runs in three overs during the course. Earlier, the Patriots too had a disappointing start to the innings after they were reduced to 39/4 with the likes of Chris Gayle and Even Lewis back in the pavilion. But what unleashed next was a treat to watch. Sherfane Rutherford and captain Dwayne Bravo had a superb day at the office after the two batters struck 115 runs for the fifth wicket. Rutherford notched up a 43-ball 53 that included four maximums and a couple of boundaries while Bravo remained unbeaten at 47 off 35. Later, Allen too chipped in with a quick-fire 19* off 7 to help the side put 175/5 in 20 overs on the board. Oshane Thomas bagged three wickets for Barbados while Amir and skipper Jason Holder picked up one wicket each. Later, Bravo talked about his partnership with Rutherford. “I was just trying to play the ball on merit with a clear mind. Once we bat deep, we know we can capitalize. I will give a lot of credit to Sherfane for the way he batted,” he said after the match. Barbados skipper Holder admitted that they did give away some extra runs but also lauded Thomas for his performance with the ball. “Not a bad bowling effort. Pretty good with the new ball. Oshane Thomas was brilliant. Probably gave 20 runs too many in the end. Bravo and Sherfane batted so well. It's not a surprise to me (to see Oshane Thomas do well),” he said. Barbados will now lock horns with Trinbago Knight Riders while Patriots will play Guyana Amazon Warriors on Saturday.

England thoroughly dominated India on the second day of the third Test in Leeds and reached 423/8, leading by 345 runs at stumps. Captain Joe Root who has been on song in this series notched up yet another century in the first innings while Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed and Dawid Malan scored individual fifties during the course. Talking about the track, Malan said that the pitch didn’t really have much on offer for the bowlers and it changed “massively”. "The wicket changed massively from the first day the first hour when they were batting," Malan said in a virtual press conference after the end of second day's play. "I would not say they were flat with their bowling. They absolutely ran in and tried their socks off. They asked a lot of questions and probably didn't get that much help from the wicket," he added. The hosts were 350/4 when Jonny Bairstow departed for 29 but the right-hander’s dismissal was followed by a flurry of wickets in a quick succession reducing England to 383/7 with Root being sent back to the pavilion as well. Sam Curran and Craig Overton then stitched a partnership of 35 runs before Curran was undone by Mohammed Siraj for 15. Overton on the other side remained unbeaten at 24 as England finished the proceedings on Day 2. India were earlier bundled out for 78 in the first innings on Day 1 after the England pacers ripped through the Indian batting unit. The visitors presently lead the five-match series 1-0 after they clinched a win at Lord’s during the second Test.

CPL 2021 | TKR vs GAW: Guyana hold nerves to start campaign on positive note

Guyana Amazon Warriors began the CPL 2021 campaign on a positive note after defeating Trinbago Knight Riders by 9 runs in St Kitts on Thursday. Chasing 148, the TKR side had a disappointing start to the chase after they lost Lendl Simmons early. The Knight Riders kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 90/7 with the likes of Kieron Pollard and Darren Bravo back in the hut. Later, Denesh Ramdin tried to steady the ship for the side and stitched a stand of 21 runs with Akeal Hosein for the 8th wicket before departing for 28 off 25, courtesy a good catch on the boundary line by Romario Shepherd off Shoaib Malik. TKR needed 32 runs off the last over and Naveen-ul-Haq was handed over the ball who was smashed for a maximum on the very first delivery of the over which was also a no-ball. The equation came down to 25 needed off the last six balls. But the fast bowler made a good return and gave away just three runs in the next three deliveries to get Warriors back in control and then scalped Ravi Rampaul’s wicket on the fourth ball. He was hit for a couple of sixes on the trot on the final two deliveries of the innings by Hosein but that didn’t really create much of a problem for Guyana as TKR fell short of the target eventually. Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers for Guyana after he scalped a three-for while Imran Tahir and Odean Smith picked up a couple of wickets each. Earlier, the Amazon Warriors rode on a fine half-century from Shimron Hetmyer to score a decent total of 142/7 in 20 overs. The Warriors also lost an early wicket after Brandon King was sent back in the hut for 9 by Hosein. The Guyana team kept losing wickets regularly but Hetmyer held the fort from one end. Sunil Narine and Hosein had a brilliant day on the field with the ball. Both the bowlers returned with figures of 2/17 in 4 overs. TKR captain Pollard said that dropping catches and giving away runs created some pressure on them. “I thought we gave them too many runs in the backend. We dropped a few catches. Those 10-15 runs mattered. We only have ourselves to blame for not getting over the line,” he said after the match. Pooran hailed the team’s efforts after the win but also expressed disappointment on the way the last over went. ”TKR are a very good team but we were very positive. But we fought and fought till the end. We thought if we could save our batters a bit and let Odean know what he can do in the powerplay. The bowlers did well on this track. A little disappointed as to how the last over went,” he said. TKR will now play Barbados while Guyana will be up against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Saturday.
