There is no end of bad luck in sight of India’s number three Chetehswar Pujara as he found yet another unfortunate way to get out on the third day of the second Test against Chennai. This is his second dismissals in bizarre fashion in this series after the first innings of the first Test.

In the morning session of the third day, Pujara was playing in the usual style of stepping down to the pitch of the ball to negate spin, but for once Moeen Ali’s delivery jumped right to the short leg fielder Ollie Pope who was alert to find Pujara was outside of the batting crease. 


Pujara recovered quickly to turn around in order to get back into the crease, but his bat got jammed in the pitch just on the line and his second attempt of making it into the crease by his feet was not quick enough and Ben Foakes whipped off the bails to send him back to the pavilion.

Pujara looked distraught after the dismissal. He was dismissed in a similar bizarre manner in the first Test when his ferocious pull shot against off-spinner Dominic Bess found Ollie Pope’s shoulder and the ricochet was pouched safely by Rory Burns stationed at the short midwicket position.

Pujara’s wicket brought a collapse of the Indian batting order in the first session of the third day as the trio of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Ajinkya Rahane quickly joined him in the dressing room. Virat Kohli held one end together while Ravichandran Ashwin played some remarkable shots to take India’s lead past 350-run mark at the Lunch interval on the third day.

Miller’s half-century in vain as Hasan-Nawaz all-round show helps Pakistan bag the series

Hasan Ali, who was making his comeback to T20 cricket, hit 20 off just seven deliveries to help Pakistan chase down 165 and beat South Africa in the third and final T20I at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This also meant that one of the finest T20I knocks while playing with the tail from David Miller, who hit a 45 ball 85, also went in vain. With this victory, the Babar Azam led side also won the series 2-1 to back their 2-0 drubbing of the Proteas in the Tests. With this win, Pakistan also reached the landmark of 100 T20I wins, becoming the first team to achieve this feat. The new opening pair of Haider Ali and Rizwan Ahmed started the innings, different from the last two matches where Babar opened with Rizwan. They went cautiously at the start and built a 51 run partnership to lay a solid foundation for the chase. But once Haider Ali got out, Rizwana and Talat Hussain followed him. It came down to Babar Azam and experienced Asif Ali. Ali too disappointed as the chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi ran through the middle order and put Pakistan on the verge of a defeat. He ended his spell with figures of 4-25. The defeat started staring the Men in Green in the face when Babar was castled by Dwaine Pretorius. Faheem Ashraf too went out playing a not required shot. At 137-6, Pakistan had two bowling all-rounders in Mohammad Nawaz and Ali at the crease with 28 needed from the last three overs. Nawaz hit Pretorius for two fours in the 18th over and together they took 12 runs from that over to bring the equation down to 16 from 12. Andile Phehlukwayo then bowled the worst over of the match, getting hit for a waist-high no-ball. The equation came down 9 from 11 and then a wide, a four and a six sealed the deal for Pakistan. Nawaz for his brilliant bowling and a crucial batting performance was awarded Man of the Match. Earlier in the evening, Pakistan won the toss for the first time in the series and bowling first dismantled the Proteas batting lineup. While Nawaz got rid of Reeza Hendricks and JJ Smuts, debutant Zahid Mahmood took three wickets and showcased the amount of talent that he has. Wickets kept on falling as South Africa reeled at 65-7 at one stage. It was then that Miller decided enough was enough and started playing his shots. He had a 41 run stand with Bjorn Fortuin and then added unbeaten 58 in just 29 balls with Lutho Sipamla. Miller hit seven sixes and five fours in his innings and collected 25 runs off the last over to give South Africa a fighting total. Mohammad Rizwan who hit 197 runs in three innings alongside a hundred and a fifty was adjudged Man of the Series.

West Indies create history, win yet another thriller to whitewash Bangladesh 2-0

A second strung West Indies team, led by Kraigg Brathwaite achieved what hadn’t been done for the past nine years by any other Caribbean side. They beat Bangladesh in a thrilling encounter by 17 runs in the second Test to whitewash the hosts 2-0. With this series win, West Indies also won a two or more match Test series in Aisa for the first time in 12 years. Rahkeem Cornwall was the hero of the match for Windies picking nine wickets in the entire game. He picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings and carried it into the second innings, getting another four to add to his tally. Bangladesh started the last day in a brilliant manner sending the Windies team packing for just 117 in their second innings, having conceded a 113 run lead in the first. They started the chase with a great attitude as well, not wasting too many deliveries. Somya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal added 59 for the first wicket, making it look like a cakewalk for the hosts. Opposition skipper Brathwaite brought himself in as a changeup and got Sarkar out with his first delivery. Soon after Tamim too played a rash shot to get himself out and the Bangladesh side started fumbling. One after other batsmen got out as the spinners picked up the pace and bite from the fourth day Dhaka wicket. Skipper Mominul Haque and first innings highest scorer Litton Das tried to provide some semblance to the innings, but all in vain as a ripper from Jomel Warrican hit Mominul high on the bat, ricocheted off the pads and went into the waiting hands of Cornwall at leg slip. After the 32 run stand was broken Das too got out trying to cut one off Warrican, without actually coming in the line of the ball. It was Mehedi Hasan and the tailenders left to ponder upon with 84 runs still needed. Hasan fought brilliantly trying to inch his team as close to the target as possible. He found helping hand in Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hassan, his spin bowling partners, who both gave him company briefly, but got out in bizarre fashion. The former was hit on the pads plumb with bat guarding the pads while the latter didn’t even bother to offer a shot. With all hopes of a win dashed out as the last man, Abu Jayed came on the crease. Mehedi decided to go big and was helped by tow four runs courtesy of byes by Brathwaite. He then hit Cornwall for 25 runs in the next three overs, before one of Warrican’s deliveries bounced more than he expected, catching him wrong fitted on the front foot. It took his gloves and giant-sized Cornwall bent forward, dived and took a brilliant catch in the slip to make sure that Windies claimed the series. While Cornwall got the Man of the Match award, Nkrumah Bonner, who scored crucial 231 runs in the four innings of this series, contributing every time his team was found lacking, got the Man of the Series award.

2nd Test Day 2 Report: Ashwin, Axar script perfect day for India on 15-wicket day at Chepauk

Cricket pundits had opined after the end of the first day’s play that the score of 300 runs for the loss of six wickets was already a mountainous task for the England team to challenge, and by the end of the second day’s play all those assertions were coming out to be true. England are so far back in the game that even a collapse by the Indian batting order such as Adelaide would need magic for them to save the game. India are just one wicket down for 54 runs in their second innings with the tormentor in chief for the tourists—Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease when the second day’s play ended. They are ahead of England by a huge margin of 249 runs, and it will be more a formality for the sides as the path for Joe Root’s only going to get a lot tougher. The hero for India was Ravichandran Ashwin who bagged yet another fifer in Test cricket. He has taken 29 five-wicket hauls in 141 Test innings and his greatness with the ball can be emphasized with the number of innings that the great Glenn Mcgrath took to bring up his 29th fifer in Tests. The Australian pacer who is rated as one of the best to have ever played the game took as many as 243 innings to bag as many fifers in Tests as Ashwin has in his kitty. Joe Root started his scoring with a sweep shot and he would have hoped to get the better of Indian spinners with his distracting technique once more, but the natural variation off the pitch was too much for him to handle and combat only by sweep shot and he top-edged his shot to Ashwin placed perfectly for his sweep shots and Axar was delighted to see him back as his first Test wicket. For India, Ben Stokes was the only dangerman left among the ones who made them suffer in the last Test, and the spearhead of the attack Ashwin took it upon himself to get the better of Stokes. He started tossing the ball up towards the leg stump of Stokes from round the wicket angle with the help of drift and one that turned sharply after dipping just in front of the all-rounder’s bat on middle stump line, rattled the furniture and with that any hopes of England’s defiance in the first innings. English top order was already razed by the end of the first session, but the partnership between Ben Foakes, who was playing his first Test after two years, and Ollie Pope tried to calm down the nerves. Both tried to score runs from the backfoot whenever spinner erred in lengths and reached out to the pitch of the ball to defend. A frustrated Virat Kohli brought Kuldeep Yadav after a long spell from Ashwin and Axar and the spinner who has been waiting in the wings for more than two years to bowl in a Test match had a perfect pitch to get into the groove all over again. He bowled good lengths and around the stump line, but his weakness in terms of being slow through the air allowed both Foakes and Pope to play from the backfoot and negate the turn he was getting. He then brought a change in the bowling attack from the other end and introduced Mohammed Siraj to debut with the ball on Indian soil. His remarkable run with the red ball in hand continued where he left off in Australia where bagged a fifer in the last bowling innings and picked up the big wicket of Ollie Pope on the very first ball. Pope was caught late on a ball that bounced more than he anticipated and his reluctant half pull-half get out of the way shot found Rishabh Pant behind the wicket who has made sure to not miss any opportunity to be in the limelight in the recent past. The wicket peer dived valiantly to grasp the ball in his webbing and managed to control the ball from slipping away from his grasp even after it bounced off from his hand after he fell onto the ground. At the other end of the pitch, Foakes was astute with bat and picked lengths of the ball very quickly and adjusted his footwork accordingly. The lower order had their task cut out and they could not resist against the discipline of Ishant and variety and guile of Ashwin, and in the end, Foakes was left stranded in a similar way Pant was left earlier in the day when the Indian tailender batsman could not quite hang around long enough to allow the wicketkeeper-batsman to take the full advantage of an under-pressure bowling line up. Starting the day, India were hopeful of some runs from Axar and Pant to set the tone before they could unleash their spinners, but the debutant failed with the bat and was undone by Moeen Ali. Ishant Sharma could not show the discipline associated with him to provide support to Pant while a misjudged single by Pant exposed Kuldeep to the raw pace of Olly Stone. In the end, Pant was unbeaten at 58 balls for 77 balls that included seven fours and three sixes. He was furious when Siraj gifted his wicket away to England and it showed his hunger to make quick runs to put a lot more pressure on the England team than the score of 329 would have put. After facing their first loss at home in Tests after a period of four years, the Indian team was back to their best as spinners honed in with their line and lengths. Amid a huge uproar on the quality of the pitch, the trio of Ashwin, Axar and Kuldeep showed better consistency and quality as compared to their English counterparts. It would have elated Kohli and the team management who could opt for a pitch like the one in the second Test at Chepauk only by taking a punt on them to outbowl the English spinners and also backing batsmen to put on the brilliance that came in the form of Rohit Sharma’s hundred and a pair of fifties from Pant and Rahane.
